i think bryce's injuries have affeted basabe too. mel doesnt have any real post moves and doesnt have any shot outside 10 ft. this makes him very easy to guard without a pg to really push the tempo to get mel running or a true pg that can run the pick and roll with him. white and mccabe are better as pure post move and shooting guys and that is why basabe has struggled and lost playing time. marble isnt very adept at using the pick and roll and finding the roll man and that is where mel thrives with his athleticism. i think of amare stoudamire when i see mel play. he needs a true pg. i believe gesell and clemmons will help mel emerge. then how marble looked at times on the wing and cutting the baseline as he gets more time their look for him to make another big jump.

Goofball. BC is fast, its just out of control fast. Gesell is smarter with the ball but wont be the playmaker in the paint like BC can be when hes on.

Don't know about faster, but I'd say Cartwright is definitely more athletic. Gesell probably has a higher basketball IQ and just a "smarter" player. Cartwright probably better at penetrating and getting to the hole. Gesell is probably a better free throw shooter and pure shooter overall. Does this some up what you're suggesting?

That sounds like a prototypical generalization of race in sports:
Cartwright is black and Gesell is white. Therefore Cartwright is more athletic, can slash, etc... while Gesell is smarter and a better shooter. Painting with a broad brush there.
The real issue w/ Cartwright is he plays too fast sometimes because contrary to some people's belief, he's not that athletic. He's pretty quick overall, but he doesn't jump that great and he's not fluid when changing directions. He also dribbles too high and doesn't make quick decisions well. He's gutsy out there, though. He's made his fair share of big shots. He's actually a really good passer when he plays within himself. Solid FT shooter. Good jumpshot from inside 17 ft.

This years team is probably a HEALTHY Cartwright away from the NCAA, if not at least on the bubble.
this whole season rested on Cartwright staying healthy. he was the one player Iowa could not afford to be injured, he was hurt off and on all season and the success was better than i thought it would be with him hurt, who knows how some of the loses would have turned out if he had been healthy
