Cartwright or Payne next year?

This is a trick question because the answer is Both. I don't care who starts, assuming Payne returns to good health, I think he will play quite a bit, often at the same time as Cartwright. Let Cartwright have the ball because he's a better creator and Payne can slide over to the combo shooting guard / second point guard slot that would been nice to have this year as Payne is a good shooter and crafty with the ball. Then when Cartwright sits, slide Payne back to the pure point guard spot.

I disagree. In this scenario Marbles minutes would be down. I'm not saying that these 2 will never be on the floor together but I think May, Gatens, Marble, and McCabe (he will also log some minutes at the 4 spot)will play the majority of the minutes at the wing.

Some of us were calling for Cartwright to become the starter prior to Cully being injured (I was one of them - toot, toot). No way does he lose the starting job next year. Cully will only be a Soph with the medical redshirt and playing behind Cartwright isn't going to kill him. Depth is critical to this team. Cully and Cartwright can play the 1 and the 2 when necessary.

PG - Cartwright Payne
Wing - Gatens, Marble, May, Oglesby
Wing - Marble, Gatens, May, Oglesby
PF - Basabe, McCabe, Stokes
C - Brommer, Archie

Add in one or hopefully two JUCO bigs and we've got ourselves a legit team.

Is this a serious post?? I mean really?

I just wanted to discuss it and the minutes situation, see if everyone was thinking the same thing I was. But a month ago I think there was still a debate. I mean Payne was a true freshmen starting pg last year(even though that was a little out of lack of options).

Dface Cully broke his back his senior year of high school and it's given him problems. This year he had a hernia and a torn oblique. So going forward his health in general is a question mark.

hawkeye12345 that would be an impressive prediction because Payne got hurt before the season.

I think Cartwright will for sure start next year and hopefully a healthy Payne will play about 10-15 mpg. The OP has an interesting point about Marble because if you factor playing Cartwright and Payne at the same time and add Oglesby to SG we are diminshing Marble's opportunity at SG. My guess is May's minutes will be decreased and you'll see a lot of Cartwright/Marble, Oglesby, Payne/Gatens line up.

Without doing the math I'm guessing Marble will play about 15 mpg and (a too far out prediction) think he will be starting his Junior year.

Stormin, I may have missed it somewhere but I have only heard that his injury was referred to as a "sports hernia." Looking that up, it sounded like it was abdominal. Like I said, I might have missed it somewhere. Can you clear this up for me?

You are correct on the sports hernia. That's the latest injury he had and that's the surgery he had this winter. However, he's still had issues with his back since the injury his sr year in high school. Wearing a back brace is a not out of the ordinary for Cully.

I think to many people are putting to big of emphasis on minutes. Iowa wants to run, Iowa wants to press there will be plenty of rotations going on. Fran will favor having good ball handlers on the floor. If Iowa lands a pg recruit you will see alot of two pg's on the floor at the same time. Who ever has the hot hand will get minutes. Having Depth would be a great problem.

Just and interesting thread, considering what Cartwright is doing right now. He is clearly right now the best True PG Iowa has had in many years.

based on what ive read about cully's back injury as a senior, it could have even led to his hernia and other abdominal issues. at this point i think cully is a good player with a bad injury history who will make an exceptional backup. cully and bryce can play together as well. im anxious for next years team. i am guessing we see cougill back.

With Cartwright rapidly improving I'm just curious to see if people think he has surpassed Payne to be the Starting PG next year. I think he's shown enough and if the same production continues throughout the rest of the season he'll be the starter next year.

Payne back next year also creates other minutes problems. Marble seems like a good talent, but only gets 17 minutes a game and 10 of those as the backup PG. With only Cole leaving next year(and Payne back) his minutes may even diminish more. I love are depth but it hards for a guy to improve when he doesn't get on the floor. Fran's done great with improving Cartwright and Brommer. I'm kind of hoping he could do the same with Marble, but seems unlikely at least next year with his minutes looking to be marginalized.

With Basabe rapidly improving I'm just curious to see if people think Archie will surpass Basabe to be starting next year. :) :D

Archie is back next year and also creates other minute problems. :D

What? He may have been injured prior to the season - are you thinking of Gatens mayb? but he was certainly our starting PG against SDSU, ULM, Xavier, Alabama and I believe Long Beach St as well.

Cully will come off the bench to spell Cartwright. But at times, my guess is both will be in game and one or the other will move over to the 2 spot, especially at end of games for ball handling if we are up. Although, if it's close, Cully might be on bench since he doesn't shoot FT's very well!!

Nothing against Payne, but the only reason he ever got the starting PG spot was simply because we had no one else to run it. He had his chance, but now IMO it's Cartwrights spot to lose.

Really did not follow the hawks led by Payne last year, kids, job, living 30 min from Lawerence KS, caused me not to care too much about the declining Hawks. I say give Payne a chance to compete, it at least brings depth to the position. Do not by any means crown Payne the starter based on the fact that he has been in the program longer. Cartwright is playing great, this is Fran's Team now and I say let him decide. He has already sold me as I have not followed this team this much since the first few years of Alford's tenure.
