Can someone explain why some say we’ll be better next year?

Dude, just stop already.

Come on, this is just getting interesting. No mention of Hayden's 1981 team beating #7 Nebraska and #6 UCLA, but losing to ISU who was 5-5-1 that year? Or #9 Iowa losing at Hawaii in 1988 or beating Tulsa by 1 at home in 1993, or losing at Tulsa in 1996. Do those losses tarnish Hayden's legacy like Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, or NDSU for Kirk?

That's football. :)

Yeah I know. It's a fun house here. Seriously though. Northern Illinois & Western Michigan are worse programs than ND St.

I will agree with you. But Hayden's teams struggled with bad teams too. Not as often as Kirk's, but it happens. Hayden's 1982 Rose Bowl team was #6 in the country and lost to Minnesota who was 6-5 and didn't go to a bowl game. They also lost to ISU (5-5-1) that year (in between wins over the #7 and #6 teams Nebraska and UCLA). Who can explain that?

Robowe won this one...

Nope. Good discussion both ways. I can see his point with the schedule overall. The extra game helps Kirk overall and his schedule in the non-conference wasn't nearly as tough as Hayden's. I was trying to provide an explanation.

What was this thread about again? Oh yeah, next year. I love perspective. Here's how I see it:

Pessimistic view --> look at all the players we are losing (Wadley, Jewel, possibly JJ)
Optomistic view --> look at the players coming back (Stanley, Epenesa, Fant)

It really comes down to replacing the players a team loses, and the returning players improving or not. No one knows ... yet.

College football is completely different today than it was in Hayden's day. More teams, more money, more television coverage. The whole argument is dumb.

PS - with 2 weeks left in the regular season, Alabama is playing Mercer on Saturday.

Agreed.

Auburn vs Louisiana Monroe
Clemson vs Citadel
Oklahoma vs Kansas :)

ok, you're both winners... i just think... if this team finds a way to go 8-4 against that schedule, and considering how close 3 of the loses were and what Iowa has coming back, how can you NOT be optimistic?

Losing 3 senior LBs & JJ.

Another off season with the coaching staff. Wait, is that good news or bad? :)

Seriously, the defense will need the DL to improve and whatever LBs play to come up to speed quickly. JJ's loss would be huge - it hasn't happened yet. The offense will need Stanley to improve and some playmakers at RB and WR to step up. I would hope the line would improve with the youngsters at each tackle. Lot's of what ifs.

They lose good players every season, that's how CFB works. Lost King, CJ, Kittle, Johnson from last season - people thought 6-6, which could still happen, but probably not... they've just out performed despite the loses they incurred last year.

Can you imagine the outcry from the fan base in 1990 if social media was around? All Iowa has to do is beat a 5-5 Minnesota team in the last week to win the B1G outright. Hawks lose the game, finish in a 4 way tie, but still winning the conference and goes to the Rose Bowl.

The thing is people look back and remember winning the B1G and going to the Rose Bowl. Today if KF lost the last game of the year to a 5-5 team missing out on an outright B1G title, there would be hell to pay on this site!

Next year is gonna be defining point for what we can expect for Brian's future; either good or bad.

IMO the only losses that will really hurt will be Jewell and Wadley.

Jackson was a stud this year but it came completely out of nowhere. Losing him will suck but it was kind of like a Ricky Davis flash in the pan thing where he was here and gone before you even knew what hit you.

The rest of the guys? Bazata, Bower, MVB, Welsh, Niemann, Taylor...all good players but I consider them your standard yearly turnover.

agree 1000% - they put all their chips on this as far as Brian's future at Iowa. Personally, I am cheering for him. I know the fatigue that the fans have. And I get it. But I think him stepping in and taking over and keeping the continuity of what Kirk has built and foundation would be huge. Me personally.. and this is just me, and it's based on what I see happen at other programs on the reg, I fear for the next hire if he's not the right guy and what might happen. I just want what's best for Iowa, whatever that is.

They had losses at Nebby At Mich and At OSU. They beat ISU by about the same as what Iowa did. The also lost to MSU in a close game and was ranked. Iowa beat MSU in a close one. Not like they lost to NDSU or something or only had 66 yards.

The win gave Minny bowl eligibility. HF should be fired huh?

Where did I say he should be fired? I would be defending Fry on here, from all the idiots who would have wanted to fire him for blowing the sole B1G championship.

I am a big Fry guy. I only use his similarities to KF to show how social media drive perception today. A "down year" isn't received real well around here, yet Fry followed up the '91 season with 5, 6, and 5 wins with 1 bowl appearance in those 3 years. How do you think that would be received around here now?
