Can Iowa Beat Purdue?

Iowa's next seven games look like this: vs. Purdue, at Wisconsin, at Minnesota, vs. Ohio State, at Michigan St., vs. Michigan, at Purdue.

If they are going to get a win out of that stretch, I think Wednesday's game offers the best opportunity. Purdue is definitely better than Iowa, don't get me wrong. But they haven't won a road game yet and struggled on a neutral floor with Iona (1-point win). They looked very shaky at home against High Point (2-point win) and Western Carolina (5-point win). Their best win is over Miami (#65 in KenPom's rankings).

Obviously Iowa can't brag about anything in comparison, as they don't even have a top-100 win. But there are a few other stats that look promising-- Purdue is only shooting 35% from 3 and 62% from the free throw line. Lord knows Iowa can make a team look good shooting from 3, but it isn't the strength of Purdue's team the way it was for UNI and some other squads the Hawks have faced.

The first game of the Big Ten season may be Iowa's best chance for a win in the first month of conference play. They will be coming off of a six-day break, which you could argue might kill their momentum, but Purdue will have had eight days off. I don't expect a pretty game, but I'm not going to be shocked to see Iowa pull off a win here-- maybe something of the 67-64 variety. Regardless, they need to play the way they've been playing the last couple of weeks (I would argue they have been much improved since the Brown game with the exception of eight bizarre minutes against UNI and a terrible first half against ISU). No more giving away positive momentum and starting back at square one, which is something we've seen all too often over the past few years.

i think purdue can be a win. i think any game at cha is possible. and both purdue games. minnesota is a team i think we can give a run to but it is at minny which makes it harder. i see 3 wins as a possibility in that time frame. maybe too optimistic but i like what im seeing. and we will sneak up on some teams. that is why they play the games

That is a tough start, for any team. They're starting to look better, but then, I'm sure the other teams are as well.

IMO, it comes down to how we defend. There are still lapses where guys drive the lane uncontested for easy buckets or are left wide open for 3's (repeatedly). We can't do that against teams like Purdue. If the team can defend like they did against a decent Boise State team last night and be efficient on offense (limiting turnovers), they have a shot to keep games close. We need to get more than fouls out of McCabe and Brommer and for May to find 6-8 ppg.

I'm not going to predict wins/losses with this team this season. We're just too unproven (better word than bad) this season. I'm just looking for improvement as the season wears on.
I get too frustrated when I'm expecting wins that don't come.

couldn't agree more. no more "expectations" for me, just going to watch and try to enjoy. i honestly don't like our chances in any big 10 game outside of PSU and Nebby.

No we won't beat Purdue. We'll likely start the Big 10 season 0-8. Anything other than that would exceed my expectations.

I think Iowa fans will be surprised how solid Doc Sadler coached teams are. They are better than ISU is this year.

Will be a tough game for Iowa.

I hate to break it to you, but ISU isn't that good and there are a lot of teams better than ISU.

I fully expect Iowa to split with Nebraska with each school winning at home.

Thats my point ISU is bottom of Big 12. ISU Pounds Iowa. Nebraska beat ISU in an exhibition game earlier this year.

Remember, the 'transitive' property of college basketball, or any sport for that matter, doesn't necessarily work.

So because Nebraska beat ISU in a glorified scrimmage you think they will beat Iowa?

Just when I didn't think I could read anything dumber on this board I do.

Using your logic how do you explain Iowa beating Drake, Drake beating ISU and ISU beating Iowa? Can't wait to hear this explanation.
