Calling all Jake Rudock defenders

I think the rest of the team really let down Jake this afternoon. He was making throws and hitting guys on the numbers and they were running the wrong routes or dropping passes or giving up on the play. Greg Davis didn't use his skill set right this season. The pressure on the so-called "fans" calling for the backup didn't help either. You saw glimpses of what JR is capable up, but GD has something against him and some people were sabotaging the gameplans. The offensive line was not exactly a strength either.

???

SAY WHAT

Rudock is not a good QB. He doesn't have the arm strength to make all the throws to begin with. His accuracy is not good at all either, if Beathard were given the reigns this year, and we actually played a rb at rb all year, then the offense looks completely different. Matt Millen called Rudock out the entire second half today. You knoow it's bad when an announcer does this on national TV

JR did not have his best game. He continues to amaze me at his lack of reading blitzes which caused his fumble. If the blitz is coming and no one is open throw it out the end zone.

I think JR is above avg Big 10 QB who was mediocre today. That all. I wish CJ was starting though or getting his two series each half or when JR struggles as JR doesnt seem to play complete games.

Jake would be good if we had a big run threat at runningback or an aggreasive coach. When you have a qb who can't beat you deep, a runningback who can't beat you deep, and a head coach with absolutely no imagination, you're probably not going to fair to well.

Jake didn't have it today. Between bad throws, dropped passes, and some bad decisions, CJ should have got a chance today.

It's not all on Jake though, the coaches need to take some heat also for that third quarter.

I agree.

Please, PLEASE TELL ME, how anyone has sabotaged Jake this year! He is above average as a QB and has pretty good leadership skills. But as Matt Millen pointed out many times today, Jake is slow getting the ball out of his hands and when you you consistently get it to your receivers a split second late, that is sabotaging yourself in my opinion. When you miss WIDE OPEN receivers that EVERYONE IN THE STADIUM SEES OPEN and when you consistently miss on passes to the fastest guy you have by not putting enough air under the ball, you are sabotaging yourself. Millen also said he would stuff the box and make Jake beat you with his arm. To Jake's credit, he did deliver a TD late. But that commentary was pretty much spot on.

If you want to explain how someone else has "sabotaged" Rudock this season, I would certainly be interested to hear about it. But, in all honesty, from what I saw of your post, I am not of the belief that you are a very informed football person. Either that, or you are related to or a friend of Jake. In which case your loyalty should be commended.

this team has enough talent at skill position areas to be good offensively... we have a good oline... like we usually do (the one thing that Ferentz is actually truly good at... everything else is meh).

Yet we play the slowest, most unexplosive guys we can.

Rudock rarely if ever puts together a compete game. Has one good half then plays poorly in the other. He cost them the game today; two red zone trips that resulted in zero points, both times due to Rudock turnovers. Ballgame right there.

Rudock is a mirror image of this team as a whole, overall he's unfailingly mediocre. He has stretches where he plays well but those moments are always followed or preceeded by stretches of poor play. He's very limited in what he can do and yes, Beathard has more talent and a much higher ceiling and should be starting. Unfortunately we have one more year of Rudock which will limit what this team can achieve. He's not terrible by any means, he's just limited and....average. The perfect Kirk Ferentz QB.

Jake is the perfect game manager for Ferentz. Of course, Ferentz's offense is like a K-Mart and Jake is managing it with check downs to the fullback and audibles to the stretch play to the right like they're blue light specials.

Is there another team in the world that would have thrown a 15 yard hook n ladder over a Hail Mary on last play to cover up their qbs "cannon"? I'm sure...l

Jake just can't beat you deep. For all his headiness, he can't call an audible into anything but a run to the short side of the field. He gives up on plays when he shouldn't and tries to keep plays alive (that fumble forward on the sack) when he shouldn't. His arm is strong enough for 30 yds with some touch, but not 30 yds on a rope. When he tries to do it, the result is a late or overthrown ball.

The coaching staff isn't doing him any favors. When Iowa passes deep, it's 3 seams and a slot/te slow drag across the middle. Iowa doesn't run routes to holes in the zone on a consistent enough basis for him to develop any sort of confidence or rhythm. Iowa plays him under center too much in non-play action situations. They don't move the pocket enough to prevent inside blitzes and bull rushes from hurrying his throws, probably because he isn't strong enough to throw accurately on the run, but you at least have to have SOME option to run the football as a QB or the D can sell out crashing to the football on passes without worrying about the QB breaking contain. Nebraska's defensive ends didn't try to stay home all day, today.

Jake is a nice kid. The kind KF would like to adopt. He'd make a fine QB for the Univ of Northern Iowa. CJ and Sokol (maybe Shimonek?) are better.
Vandeberg is a nice kid. The kind KF would like to adopt. He'd make a fine WR for the Univ of Northern Iowa. Willies is better.
McCarron is a nice kid. Blah blah blah blah.

Screw it, it's not the kids fault. The coach is supposed to know how to defend a fake punt; manage the clock; run up the score and put the best personnel on the field. But he doesn't. And he's never going to. (though bizarrely he used to) But darn it, he's the best coach in the land when it comes to choosing an agent. Here's the trophy you get when winning the "best-agent-selection" Olympics.

You nailed it but the AD did not. What NFL team would even consider Kirk Ferentz or even another top 25 football program?

Kirk has always struggled with clock management, personnel decisions, and running up the score. There were just a few years where we won anyway.

^This^

I turned to my brother-in-law right before the snap and said "this Hail Mary is really pushing up against Jake's range. I don't think he can get it there."

He replied, "It doesn't have to. Anything can happen if he at least can get it to the 10 yard line." (Which would have been something like only 40 yards or so in the air).

I was still shocked we didn't try it.

KF really minimizes our chances for success with these personnel decisions.

I kinda disagree with your brother-in-law. If the ball doesn't even make it to the endzone, it greatly reduces the odds of working. I don't know why you wouldn't put Beathard in for the throw.

Those rank amateurs with their wacky ideas of matching the talent to the situation. Why can't people accept that unless you've been a D-1 coach you can't criticize them. (BTW, this same theory applies to the POTUS);)

Yes, probably does reduce chances but I have seen balls tipped forward and batted around that go that far, or tipped "sideways" to a guy in the clear with an easy path. But always a long shot.

Also if we are going to run the hook and ladder why not put in CJ as a "decoy". Nebby would have thought we were definitely going deep. Or just put in CJ and have HIM throw it deep.

My God can you imagine the controversy if CJ would pull off something like that?

That's not part of KF's ******/plan.

But it is kind of weird. Teams use "specialists" all the time. For example, Bullock on 3rd down. So why not let the stronger-armed guy chuck it to the endzone?

JR is the sole cause of the loss? Really? Why don't you start a thread for the secondary? Bench all of them too. Once again they put an opposing QB with below average throwing ability and turn him into the star of the game. Minnesota, Wisconsin and now Nebraska's QB beat us with their arm. That if freak'en sad.
Could not agree more. It's maddening how we do this so often.
