BTN Media Day Content

O may look about same because they are practicing against what may be one of the the best defenses we have ever had.

The offense doesn’t need to improve much. They scored 31 ppg last year. An improved running game even if only slightly would be huge if all other aspects are on par w last year (WRs better neutralizes natural regression from historic TEs). A more balanced attack will help in those close games. Oh, and defense wins championships.

Agree. Cripes! Also, every year they biff on teams.

But they see the bodies, and they see athleticism (or lack thereof), and can make direct comparisons across teams. Iowa has always been a "whole greater than the sum of the parts" team, and that has to be the hope if we are legitimately thinking 10+ wins and B1G West title.

I am so irrationally excited to get this season started it is ridiculous. I need to get off these boards and get some work done.

I'd be a lot less concerned if the BTN crew hadn't gotten Wisconsin right last year during their preseason tour. I specifically remember them commenting after seeing the #4 Badgers practice that they didn't see any separation at all between them and other West Division teams. BTN never want to say anything directly negative, but their comments after watching Iowa yesterday came pretty close. Dinardo seemed especially hard-pressed to find anything positive. Hearing that Stanley had a 'not very good day' just drives me nuts; also interesting to hear KF say directly that Stanley just needs to relax and enjoy the game a bit. Of the West Div teams they've seen thus far, it seems like the BTN crew has liked the look of Nebraska and Minnesota the most.

So what's your read?

Lol, I thought that was a question.

In fairness Rob is correct in that it was just one practice.

They could have summed it up this way; “Iowa City.......... YAWN,”

They praised our defensive ends and that’s about it. Also noted the QB had a bad day.

Who was it Jon or Rob who predicted a 7-5 season? Now that’s exciting!!!!! Come back next season for more of the same. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. Damn washing machine has been stuck in the same cycle since 2004.

I am still hoping for a great season 11-2 counting a bowl victory. We are due for a 2015 type of year. The defense will lead the way.

In 09, the BIG crew were gushing over the Hawks during their one day visit. They were praising that Iowa team left and right. We finished second in the BIG and won the Orange Bowl that year. So they were right about what they saw in Iowa that year.

You’re not cheering me up any. :(

I'm sure there are examples of them being right and wrong through the years.

The bottom line is that they saw one (1) practice.

1 practice in the middle/close to the end of fall camp. At this point most teams are grinding. They aren't fresh and need different stimulation then going through the drills over and over. The O and D have faced off a lot at this point and they both know what to expect. This is practice. Practice is where you get better. I am not concerned 1 bit by what was said. While I do think these guys know a lot about the game, they virtually have no context to establish a formed opinion on what this team will be this season.

The offense doesn’t need to improve much. They scored 31 ppg last year.
Wrong.

They were 10th or worse in just about every conference offensive statistic including total offense. Improve that to 5th or 6th with last year's defense and we make the Rose Bowl.

Saying they don't need to improve much because they hit some arbitrary scoring benchmark when they were 5-4 in the conference is pretty stupid.

Agreed, and it all starts with the running game. If they can get that figured out it will make everything else that much easier.

In 2015, the offense looked absolutely putrid against our defense. Drew Ott literally lived in the backfield the entire fall camp. There was even a point that KF flat out stated that we had no depth....that our 2's looked like 3's and our 3's looked like 4's. The BTN guys were pretty luke warm as well on their visit.

All we did that year was go 12-0.

This year could go either way, honestly. We could have a 2010-type year where we have a senior QB, two stud WRs, a dispruptive DL, etc, but lose a lot of close games and run out of steam and motivation at the end. Or we could have a 2009 type year where a difficult schedule causes the team to rise to the occasion and win a lot of close games and really gel as a team.

Obviously I hope it's the latter.....

Every metric, advanced or simple, shows that ppg (along with TO margin) is the leading indicator for a successful year....not yards.

I think for this offense to take the next step, it can't bottom out in some games.

It's done so the last two years against Northwestern. It was awful against Wisconsin and Michigan State two years ago, and bad for most of the games at Penn State and v. Iowa State last season. Luckily the Cyclones offense also was putrid. The game against the Badgers last season also was uneven offensively.

I just watched the BTN show.
While critical of the team in some aspects they still qualified some the comments around injuries that kept some starters on O out and our O going up against our D.

I paid attention to the plays they showed in "scrimmage". AJE lived in the backfield on the plays Stanley was off. As good as Jackson is/is supposed to be, AJE was blowing right past him. He is going to make a lot of QBs have off days this fall.

BTN guys saw one (1) practice.

And it wasn't even a fully padded practice. It is hard to really get a feel for things when guys are just doing drills and you haven't watched them in many months. Iowa is rarely going to jump out at you as these unbelievable athletic type guys but look at what the coaches are teaching these guys. Tons of fundamentals, little details, no BS and working hard. I am sure at the end KF didn't have them go to mid field and play bull in the ring either to stroke egos.

When I saw the comment about Stanley being solid what else is he going to look like? He isn't going to run all around guys and be flashy with his legs. I am sure the coaches didn't have him line up on the goal line and show the BTN guys how far he could throw it or have BF riding in a golf cart with a garbage can on the back seeing if Stanley could put it in.

So much of football is based off the little things and making the correct adjustments to what is happening in the game and knowing situations. As a network they need to sell the hype and by them saying that Iowa will be a solid team and in the race for the West is what I expected. That is one thing the conference has going for it is parity and they want to push that agenda in my opinion, it is good for business.
