I’ve kinda kept quiet on all the fanboy hype about Stanley getting drafted, but so far the kid doesn’t have the intangibles that it takes to play Sundays. He’s a deer in the headlights and visibly turtles up. His coaches have even said as much when they talk about his play under pressure. Stats are one thing, but not shitting your Huggies when things go south on you is numero uno if you want to play pro ball.

Take CJ Beathard. Or Drew Tate. Or Stanzi. Those guys had liquid nitrogen in their veins. If they had half of Stanley’s mechanical talent they’d be multiple-year starters in the NFL. Nate is the opposite, he’s got the physical and mental requirements, but he’s not a cold blooded football player.

John Randle said he instantly knew if a QB was going to make it in the league based on how he reacted when D lineman and linebackers were throwing F-bombs and talking shit about their mothers, especially to guys who had never been outside a prep school atmosphere.

You think it’s bad now, what do you think will happen when an Aaron Donald or Akiem Hicks blindsides him out of nowhere.

He could definitely be different this year, but as of yet there’s no evidence to say one way or another.

Stanzi in particular really had moxi. He did the best at just flushing the bad plays. He'd throw a pick 6 but come back throwing and leading again. Stanley plays tight and doesn't do the best at flushing bad plays. That is my only gripe with him, that he can't just say F it and play on.

Beathard was probably the toughest QB mentally and physically to ever play at Iowa. He got absolutely beat to shit behind some terrible OL play and he always sacrificed his body. How many times did he get up limping or hobbling off to the sidelines, but never show an ounce of fear on his face or in his body language...he just kept coming back to the pocket and kept making drives no matter what teams threw at him.

If you could put that kind of toughness in a guy with Stanley's talent, you'd have an Elway/Marino on your hands.

But...he wouldn't be playing at Iowa with both of those attributes, so there's that.

To be fair, I didn't say it was. What I did say, maybe unclearly, is that PPG being at an arbitrary benchmark that @FirstDownHawkeyes declared to be good enough (33 PPG), is not an indicator that the offense doesn't need to improve.

Obviously football is more than just an arbitrary stat, and I was sorta yanking your chain a bit with the ppg stat....but it does hold pretty good water....sort of like the old addage that "yards don't win games, points do".

And I know the NFL is different than college, but I think I read somewhere that there are two stats that prove out to a 97% win % in the NFL.....turnover margin and sub 50% redzone td defense. Meaning that a team that wins the TO battle and holds teams to FGs instead of TDs 50% of the redzone trips wins games at like a 97% clip. That's why NFL coaches are so obsessive about ball security (which also explains KFs as well).....

Not sure I would agree with that. I still think Stanzi may of had that quality the most. Teammates just responded to him and he seemed to have total control of the huddle. Of course, he also had McNutt and DJK which didn't hurt him at all. Our last great WR tandem.

Iowa will win or lose based on Stanley's performance, It's that simple. The other pieces are in place.

I think the quality of Iowa's defensive line has something to say about that. If they are at least as good as last year (and at least as aggressive), Iowa should be in most of it's games. If there is dropoff for whatever reason, that puts more pressure on Iowa's back seven.

I did enjoy how they took time out of the Iowa trip to highlight the return of the dreaded "black shirts" oh nooo. It seems like they do this shit every year and their defense is still terrible.
I'm hoping they put on those skull and crossbones alt uniforms when OSU comes to Lincoln and OSU does a total boat race on them.

Didn’t CJ play with a hernia most of the year and continually got hit and got back up. I think he is the most physically tough as well as mentally. If I had one to choose over the other it would be mental and both CJ and Stanzi have Tate beat on that aspect. All three though I would have no problem giving them the ball with the game on the line. I HOPE Stanley can make that step this year, if not it could be a long year

Exactly. I don't see a step forward with Stanley either. Hock and Fant are gone, so teams don't have to account for them, and our receivers had trouble getting open last year with those 2 having to be accounted for. Shut down the running game with no home run threat there, and play the receivers man to man. Pressure Stanley and that's the recipe to beat Iowa. Stanley just doesn't have the it factor that guys like Beathard and Stanzi had.

I think Stanley is a very talented QB but Im still concerned about his weight training. I read he’s has been breaking some bench press records at Iowa by position. If true, that’s very risky for a QB and could really screw him up. It’s not good at all for his accuracy or a fluid throwing motion. Read an article by an NFL trainer for several NFL QBs and he recommends avoiding the bench press altogether and doing push-ups and other exercises for the chest and shoulders.

This is honestly one of the best posts of all time. All time classic. I’m dead serious. Top notch.

but if we lose and I have to listen to that simple-minded F give me shit about it this fall he's going to find my post-workout Hanes in his duffel bag. I know which locker he uses, and it's not my fault that my gym hands out free combination locks and he doesn't use them.

Lol, I thought that was a question.

In fairness Rob is correct in that it was just one practice.

They could have summed it up this way; “Iowa City.......... YAWN,”

They praised our defensive ends and that’s about it. Also noted the QB had a bad day.

Who was it Jon or Rob who predicted a 7-5 season? Now that’s exciting!!!!! Come back next season for more of the same. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. Damn washing machine has been stuck in the same cycle since 2004.

I am still hoping for a great season 11-2 counting a bowl victory. We are due for a 2015 type of year. The defense will lead the way.

It was a question. I'm not snarked up yet.

I think some of that info is BS. If he is lifting and throwing and working on his flexibility and Range of motion the negative impacts should really be none.

Bench press is just a crap lift anyway for football I am surprised they even pay attention enough to have records. That motion is really not involved in the game besides maybe getting up off the ground
