BTN coverage of spring "game"

I agree Samson. We have been so easy to prepare for so many years. Iowa has been a solid, consistent, but conservative to a fault team. These changes are needed. Better late than never.

I think they're going to set up the wildcat looking thing, and instead of handing the ball off, JVB is going to roll (hopefully to his good throwing side), and dump the ball underneath.

They threw to the TE today. They practiced throwing underneath a lot. TE on a LB. Been a while since we've seen that.

I don't think the conservative approach will disappear, but I do think it's not the same old Iowa we're used to seeing.

.I'm not sure. But it looked like a five man front at least once today.Anyone?
greenway would play on the end that year that we had a deficient DL - so it would look like a 5 man front, when in reality it was not. not sure what that look was called.

it is either a 4-3 over or a 4-3 under. it depends if the lb is over a te or not. if lb is over a te it is an over (i think). we did it with greenway because of his athleticism and i am pretty sure we did it with steen (sp?). probably done it more than most realize. i actually think it is more our base defense but with the lack of te's being used anymore and more slots and 4 wrs the lb that usually plays on the line is out on a slot man instead.

watched some videos from the 9 on 7 and kirksey #20 was on the los in stand up over the tight end. it was a shifted 4-3 where the strong side lb walks up on the tight end. it might look like a 5 front but it is a 4-3.

I don't think this team's ceiling is 7-5.

JVB indicated the last of the playbook was just taught in practice last week. It showed. When they went situational, they couldn't get plays off.

At the start, not on the clock, when they were practicing 1st and 2nd down plays, I thought the D Line looked fine for this early.

I'm with you Golfer, I expect 8 wins from this team, rebuilding year or not. We need to beat the teams we are supposed to beat, minny, isu, northwestern. I don't care if these teams intesity was higher then ours that day. We need to meet their emotion and excede it. With the youth on this team the intensity should be high players will be trying to prove they belong. Although there will be brain farts, the flatness we have come out with at times the last two years will hopefully change.

Iowa ran a lot of the 4-3 Under look today. Looked to be there base. The "Under" part just refers to the fact the DTs shift towards the weak-side of the formation. They're able to do so because the SLB walks down over the TE and plays the 9-tech(contain) & bumps the DE inside to a 5 tech. MLB takes the Strong side B gap and the WLB has the weakside A gap.

I spotted them in 4-3 Over, Under and Stack(I think) at different times today. Hard to tell for sure what they were up to, but it was definitely a more aggressive scheme. Some zone blitzes & quite a few blitz packages for DB's & LBs.

thanks i have always struggled to keep the 4-3 over and 4-3 under separate and remember which is which. good to hear we look more aggressive.

I like it. Hope Phil can bring it as a coordinator like he did as a player.

I could care less if Ghost didn't read the post. I was wondering if anyone ever actually thought he was funny until another idiot showed up and encouraged him... Oh well apparently he has nothing of substance to contribute so he takes the class clown approach to try to get people to pay attention to him. I realize my post was long, but I figured I'd get an opinion out there for those of you who may not have been able to see the game.

Many of us appreciate posts like yours DP.

Just don't engage the "club" of HN Legends that have nothing to add.

By now, anyone that has been on here any length of time knows that ghost is a joke and should just be ignored.

As for the offense, one thing as certain as death and taxes is that the offense never looks good in the spring game. Defense is always ahead, and with a change in offense, even more so. As is the nature of these events, one side of the ball always has to look bad,if the other side does something good.

I do appreciate Gamefilms explanations and analysis. As for next season expectations, I will look at the schedule and expect 7-8 wins...until proven otherwise.

I agree JH. 7 or 8 wins is what I'm expecting. I do think the defense will be better than people are expecting. If they maintain the same level of energy and enthusiasm that I've seen so far this spring I could see them being very good by the end of the year. They just have a few players that need some experience to gain confidence.

I think the biggest key for this team to surprise people will be the development of two players with the same last name, Keenan Davis on offense and Carl Davis on defense. If those two can show up consistently and become impact players then the Hawks could sneak their way to 9 or more wins. I'm just not sure Carl Davis can stay healthy, and Keenan needs to let the game slow down a bit. Seems like he's always thinking instead of reacting.

Nope. It was just a dick move against a well written post. Stuff like that just discourages decent posters. It would have been funnier if he would have used it on some rambling, half-legible post.

Good post, DP5555; you actually contributed information.

Agree, not cleaver at all.

The point of message boards is to discuses things, when people get mocked for using them for the intended purpose the person doing the mocking should find something else to do.

The one exception I remember was 2002, where the O shredded the D...which we saw why during the season...
