BTN coverage of spring "game"

You are right about the stats, but for some reason he still doesn't stand out or exude confidence when you watch him. He makes me nervous, as a lot of times it seems he doesn't know what he is gonna do. He locks in on one option or target too often. I want some cockiness in my QB. Can already see some in Sokol.

Overall, i was a bit disappointed with the offenses execution. To be expected at this point in a new system i suppose. Definitely seemed like the offense is going to be opened up quite a bit. Damon Bullock showed a little burst on a long TD run. I thought Vandenberg looked a little shaky, but it is the spring game and he was probably forcing it a bit trying to make plays for the crowd. He did look like he had good command of the offense. He and Rudock threw some pretty bad interceptions. I'm glad Keenan will be in Shumpert's spot. He made a couple plays and showed he has the ability to get by his man, but man was he inconsistent. He left a couple plays out there because of dropped balls, and he had one fumble that can't be blamed on anything other than carelessness. I was also a bit disappointed with KMM. He made a great grab on the sideline for what would have been a first down. He also missed what would have been a great Td catch falling out of bounds, but the ball did hit him in the hands. It was nice to see Jordan Cotton make a couple plays. He looks like he could be in position to contribute. Also, CJ didn't stand out much today. He looked a bit lost on a couple plays. I'm sure Davis has some plays designed for him, but I wouldn't be surprised if they keep those from the public until the season gets here. As far the offensive line goes I thought they looked pretty stout.

The defense is probably the bigger story today which is a good sign for the Hawks considering many were expecting it to be their weak point. They really only gave up the big run to Bullock and about a 40 yard pass over the top to Shumpert. The energy level was certainly pumped up from what I've seen in recent years. Nico Law is going to be a difference maker. He really brings the thunder when he comes up to support the run. He knocked off Bullock's helmet in one instance. Thought the defensive line looked solid. Cooper doesn't give up an inch against the run and seems to have some nice quickness. They looked bigger than I expected them to look for some reason. Morris and Kirksey were all over the place and Parker was sending blitzes frequently. In my opinion, this defensive backfield is going to be more athletic than any other in the Ferentz era. I really think we could be in for a surprise with this defense.

Speaking of surprise... who the heck is Gavin Smith?? Number 30 i believe. He was a back up defensive back but he made a couple really nice plays. I realize he was going against the back ups as well but still his aggressiveness was impressive. He made a couple nice reads and broke on the ball in a flash. It probably doesn't mean much but thought it was worth mentioning.

Agree, what JVB did on paper last year and what I witnessed with my own eyes are two different things. At times last year he just looked shocked and defeated during games, a deer in head lights look if you will. This was clearly evident against the better teams, corncobs, sooners, penn state. If this situtation doesn't remedy itself it will be a long year for the hawks.

Usually those were pretty important drives too so its magnified.

i wouldnt mind reading a gamefilm review of the practice. and his take on some of the young players. hopefully he was there and could do this.

Blitz package once was a three man blitz. Several times a two man. Still tried to combine blitz with traps though. At least it looked like it to me.

Two new formations on offense, and one was out of the shotgun in their red zone drill.

I'm not sure what you'd call the other one, I'd need to see it again. Kind of like a sort of pro-set derivation of a wildcat looking thing. They handed the ball off most of the time from this. Passed a couple of times out of it, but it looked to me like at least one pass was a broken play.

The offense looked shaky.

Very difficult for me to tell if I should be encouraged by the D. The D is usually always ahead of the O this time of year, but the D broke up a couple of plays in the backfield.

And I think the picks were more on the QB's, rather than D line pressure.

They used a 5 man front several time. Also played the receivers tighter, but no bumps off the line to disrupt the pattern.

That is what I thought I saw.

What am I missing?

No joke the first thing i though when i saw all the paragraphs the guy wrote was I can wait to see what Didn't read gif Ghost puts up this time. And thank you Ghost you did not disappoint... Good Sh!t
Nope. It was just a dick move against a well written post. Stuff like that just discourages decent posters. It would have been funnier if he would have used it on some rambling, half-legible post.

Good post, DP5555; you actually contributed information.

are you sure it was a 5 front? we do walk lbs up onto the los sometimes. it is a 4-3 over look usually.

He's like a cancer to a quality thread or post. Popping up at random places and killing the posts that have life.

I do like our d-backs. They seemed very active...including castillo and lomax. During one blitz, Rudock was shocked, it appeared, by how fast lomax was on him. For a lot of the scrimmage, tho, they were going against Shumpert, Cotton and sometimes K-Mart. THose are some pretty inexperienced wideouts.

We are probably looking at 6-6 or 7-5. The schedule is very favorable this year. The defense could surprise this year. Keep in mind that some players were injured and there may be some incoming freshmen that will contribute this year.

I agree about some people that discourage posters. This gets awful old. But evidently it is all about clicks.

Definitely are some groups of posters that this forum is their life because they are always commenting on every thread. Maybe they don't work or maybe no social life except for this. I usually just sit back and read because it does discourage new posters who don't want to be ridiculed for repeating something someone said a few days ago, or a typo, or a name wrong.
The earlier poster put a lot of effort into sincerely providing an opinion and information others could benefit from.
It seems Jon Miller sincerely wants to put out info to Hawk fans nation wide, but some of his "legend" posters get away with this crap that may have been funny the first time, last month, just because they have 3000 posts or whatever.
This may drive away new "customers" Jon.

.

I'm not sure. But it looked like a five man front at least once today.

Anyone?

greenway would play on the end that year that we had a deficient DL - so it would look like a 5 man front, when in reality it was not. not sure what that look was called.

Last year scUM changed up their D with the 6 man bear front. If Parker implements a 5 man front it will be interesting to see how and when it is used.

Whatever it was, or whatever it's called, it was different. I thought there were quite a few significant differences today, on both sides of the ball. No replay, so hard sometimes to catch it all.

New wrinkles are a plus, many of our opponets have stated Iowa is the easiest team to game plan for. Maybe, with a little change here and there a team that's so called ceiling is 7 wins can suprise a few teams and change 7 wins to 8 or 9.

I don't think this team's ceiling is 7-5.

JVB indicated the last of the playbook was just taught in practice last week. It showed. When they went situational, they couldn't get plays off.

At the start, not on the clock, when they were practicing 1st and 2nd down plays, I thought the D Line looked fine for this early.
