Brust getting in-home visits from Wisc, Minny, BC among others

Whatever Ben...I thought you were down with the black and gold. It says Hawkeyes on the front of the jersey, not Lickliters. If you skate for Gooferville, Madison or any other Big Ten team I will be so frickin' mad.

I dont begrudge him one bit for looking at all of his options. Most kids commit because of the relationship with the coaching staffs. If you don't believe that you are fooling yourself.

I think it's safe to say that he will no longer be coming to Iowa. With all the negative recruting about Iowa taking place from these other coaches he won't be a Hawkeye. His style of play fits BC's Steve Donahue or Bo Ryan's style much better I would think and I'm sure these coaches are pointing that out. However, after reading Jon's post on coach Caff's recent recruiting trail I'm excited about the kids he will get that WANT to be a Hawkeye!!

Cmon, this is ridiculous. No one committs because they want to be a Hawk no matter what. Even McCaffreys recruits are commiting for him, not Iowa

Like Jon said, kids commit to coaches more often than not. Why do you think Calipari is able to bring his elite recruits from Memphis to Kentucky? It sure wasn't because those kids up and decided they wanted to be "true Wildcats".

The ONLY kids who come to Iowa because they love the Hawks fit one of two profiles: 1. They are from Iowa, and have been long-time die-hard Hawk fans (think McCabe), or 2. They are out-of-state, but have strong ties to the university (think Marble Jr.). Everybody else comes because they feel it's the best fit for their talents.

Now guys who get here and are in the program a couple years usually become Hawkeyes, once they develop strong bonds with their teammates, to the point where they will sacrifice anything for the betterment of the team. But incoming recruits? They don't have those bonds yet, so when a coaching change occurs, they will often do what's best for themselves. Brust and Larson are just weighing their other options in the wake of a considerable change, which is the smart thing for them to do. It does NOT mean that they won't re-sign. It means they're looking to see if they fit better elsewhere now.

Tell Jaryd Cole it aint about the H-A-W-K-E-Y-E-S on the front of the jersey. I love Jaryd, he is a true Hawkeye who has stuck it out through three coaches, and for that he will always be one of my favorite Hawkeyes. When it is senior night next season I'm gonna be there cheering my butt off for Cole because he is a true Hawk!

What is Ben gonna throw away all that Hawkeye gear he has been pimpin' for the past year? Hawkeye Pride! It means something to me, and hopefully it means something to Ben too.

You really aren't getting it. He's not a Hawkeye because he is out of state, and had no ties to the university outside of his recruitment. He doesn't have "Hawkeye Pride", because prior to his recruitment, he had no pride in Iowa basketball.

I said in my previous post that once a guy gets on campus, he can become a "true Hawkeye" because of the bonds he forms with his teammates. But a recruit doesn't have those bonds yet. The only strong bond that a recruit in Brust's situation has is with the coaches.

Seriously, I don't understand why people still aren't grasping this concept.

This is so ridiculous. I guess having a good relationship with the people you will spend most of your time with for the next 4 years doesn't matter, as long as you get to play for Iowa! Honestly, who Ben grew up rooting for or has been rooting for over the last year should be one of the last reasons he picks a school. The kid sounds like he has a really good head on his shoulders. I didn't know much about him prior to the coaching change, but I have GAINED a lot of respect for him. He isn't succumbing to the pressure and he is taking his time to make an informed, responsible decision. It seems like a lot of people around here could learn a thing or two from him.

THANK YOU!!!! I've been saying this ever since Larson decommitted. These guys are taking the time to make the best decision they can. It's their lives, and they need to live it the best they can. Anybody who wants to hate on them because that may not include coming to Iowa can f*ck off, it's not your place to decide what's best for these two kids.

I know what you are saying, and my posts were just in jest. If I really gave a crap then I would say that Basabe shouldn't come to Iowa. However, you can bet your butt I won't be cheering for Ben or wishing him luck (at least when he plays Iowa) if he goes to Minnesota or Wisky.

That's fair enough, and a reasonable stance for other fans to take. But people playing the sour grapes card, or taking those kind of passive-aggressive shots at him (like I thought you were doing) is just childish, and makes us look stupid.

If most kids commit because of the coach, then they aren't really thinking that straight about their future. The vast, vast majority of these kids won't be earning a paycheck playing ball.

I would think the school choice would be, or maybe should be, just as important for most kids. I think a lot of these kids read too many of their press clippings and internet message boards.

While that's true, it's not often the case. I mean I was always going to want to come to Iowa, but I lucked out that they happen to have a top-flight journalism program, thus giving me a good reason to come.

About as stupid and childish as multiple posts saying the same thing in every string touching on the topic.

Right, because everyone who's ever tried to get people to understand something (something actually worth understanding) was just stupid and childish. Can't believe that Jesus guy, or MLK. What were they thinking (and no, I'm not comparing what I'm saying to the messages that they delivered, but you get the idea).

I just wanted to quote this in case you sober up later and try to deprive others of a good laugh.

If kids were committing to the school and not the coach, there would be no need to recruit them. Recruits would just line up at their favorite schools and beg to be offered.

Like I said, I'm not comparing what I'm trying to tell people to Jesus and MLK's messages. But just because I try to drill it into the morons who don't seem to realize that when it comes to college selection, EVERYBODY is out for #1. Do you think that a student goes to Iowa and says: "I'm here because the university may one day be able to brag that I was a student here?" Or do you think that MAYBE, a student goes to a school because that's the school that sets THEM up for the most success in life?

I didn't come to Iowa so that the school could make a profit off of me. I came here so I could make a profit off of the top-flight education in my profession of choice. If Iowa didn't have a great journalism program, I wouldn't be here. Even though I'm a die-hard Hawk fan.

This is pretty much what happens with Texas football...
