Bret Isn’t Going To Make 60

This isn’t meant to make fun of him; he’s got 6 and 4 year old daughters and a wife. My old man didn’t stay on top of his health and he was gone at 57, it was hard enough for me at 27 to lose him. If his kids are in grade school it’s gonna be worse.

Also not going to sugar coat it, Bret not only looks easily 425lbs (the guy is 6’4”), but he’s gotten to the swollen red-faced stage where you can tell that coronary disease and fluid retention is grabbing hold of him. Fluid retention in a guy that big means congestive heart failure is right around the corner. He’s obviously got sleep apnea as well which is deadly, and the combination of all that together means if he doesn’t get his poop in a group soon he’s not going to be able to move enough to get in shape. And then it’s a fast track to dead.

Hope he figures it out sooner than later for his wife and kids.

You are spot on. He is in a profession full of stress. Not a good combination. I'd venture that he is type 2 diabetic and at risk of a stroke based on observation. I can surmise he eats to deal with stress. I hope the AD at Illinois asks him to seek help.

I agree. And whether Bert coaches for or against us I still like and respect the guy personally. I sincerely hope they miss a bowl game and he gets his house in order. He can drop 100 pounds in the offseason.

I'm 5'9" and when I got up to my heaviest at 247 that set off some alarm bells. My A1C was into the type two or pre-diabetes zone, and my doctor was suggesting taking the sleep apnea test.

It's now nine months later and I was 231 at my last physical in September. More importantly my blood tests had all improved and I avoided the sleep apnea specialist. My levels are all in normal zones any my blood pressure, while never a problem, has improved.

Wha happened you say? I cut down significantly on gas station food, the devil for all route delivery drivers, and started packing my own lunch. Saves a ton of money as well. Now those little Debbie zebra cakes and slices of Casey's pizza are down to about once a week.

Also I no longer have kids in athletics. Those Saturday spent sitting in bleachers for travel and AAU tournaments, combined with concession stand food and trips to the bars with other parents before and between games are in the the past.

I've since cut down to 225 lbs thanks to fall yard work and longer work hours with the holidays approaching. This time I want to stay there and drop more.

It takes long term commitment because I still have my share of fun with our fifty something friends. Walking has replaced my beloved running which was my crutch in my forties.my excuse for careless junk food and drink intake. I would love to get back down to 195 like I was in 2010. That was only ten lbs over my college weight. Stressing out over these Hawkeye games might get me to that goal just yet:)

The iso shots of him yesterday during the game I would be lying if I didn’t have similar thoughts as the OP. He looked enormous.

Another guy getting in that BB zone is Mike Locksley. He isn’t quite there yet, but he is another one that will have to make some lifestyle changes within the next few years.

Good for you and your family. As I read your comments and your situation I was going to tell you that you still need to lose more weight as you are still over weight by about twenty to thirty-five pounds.

Walking is very good for you and gets you fresh air. Gets cold out here in Utah in the winter time and in the summer time there are a lot bugs out here by the lake. If you don’t have one may I suggest an elliptical and a big screen tv. The tv gives you something to focus on while you’re exercising. I like to keep up on world and local news and of course Hawkeye sports. The elliptical is a low impact device and thus good on your body joints. Start out slow even if it’s just five minutes a day and keep the resistance low in the beginning. Drink lots of water as you get more into it. Try to get up to at least 20 to 30 minutes a day with increased resistance as you go.

Remember to find a tv program that you find interesting. I suggest avoiding Iowa football re-runs (blood pressure) and avoid diet soda and regular soda. The carbonation expands your stomach and the expansion makes you feel hungry more often and you have to eat more to get that full feeling. You will find just the smallest reduction in the amounts you eat will help your stomach shrink and you will start feeling more full when you do eat. It sounds like you are on the right track.

I went through this myself as the damn government had me working up to 84 hours a week (12 hrs a day x 7 days a week) in a high stress profession in dangerous areas in Atlanta. It’s refreshing to live out here in Utah. I am only five pounds away from my idea body weight. You will soon need smaller belts or buy new clothes that fit.

I am happy for you and your family. Keep up the good work.

There are many addictions in life and over eating is one of them. As big as Bert is he is at a point where he will likely need a stomach reduction surgery. Hopefully he gets the help he needs or like Fryowa points out he is not going to be around to much longer.

My wife, after fifteen years of searching for the correct insurance coverage, finally got the gastric bypass in 2019. She is down well over 100 lbs. Her issue was growing up on a farm where food was absolutely everywhere. Where lunch was a four course meal, let alone those dairy breakfasts.

She lost her dad and most of her uncles on his side to heart related issues in their sixties. She saved herself from the same fate, doubly important because we have two grandchildren now.

I will make several qualifications to my post. First of all even at 58 I lift weights four times per week, sometimes at 5 am before work. So that probably adds ten pounds that I otherwise wouldn't have.

Second, I have a very physically active job. I have a fitness app on my watch and its not unusual to accrue 8-10,000 steps and 3-4 miles just doing my job. And after my one soda in the morning it's water for the remainder of the workday.

My biggest enemy is age. If not doing due diligence it doesn't come off like it did in my forties, let alone twenties.

I use ellipticals, not a huge fan of them.

Biggest food weaknesses? Pizza, chili, and Chinese food. Biggest libation intake? Beer!

By the way I was 100% honest with my weight numbers. Most aren't. You can poll fifty people on this board and ask them to list their weight and I guarantee 45 will list lower than their actual weight.

Not that I don’t agree w/ you regarding his health however unless you’re going to be and help him improve his health then you don’t need to say anything at all.
Lol. I can’t comment on it and say I’m concerned? Then you can’t comment about any politician or public figure.

So from here on out, you’re disallowed on this board from commenting on anything Hawkeye sports-related unless you’re going to be directly involved in helping the Hawks staff win more games.

Ask me if I’m kidding. Unless you can qualify your idiotic statement that’s the deal from here on out.

Dolt.

Hey! I am 57 years old with 2 young kids. Now I am wondering if I should retire from my full time job and focus on my health

Of course you can. I just think you’re a pos for doing so on a message board. And why don’t you take your own advice and move this to the open forum since it has absolutely nothing to do w/ Iowa football.
I didn’t post it to make fun of him Einstein. Posted it because I’m concerned about the guy.

How is posting concern for someone a negative thing?

So unless you know every single person you’ve ever spoken about in your entire life, AND you help every single person you’ve spoken about in your entire life, shut up or leave. Those are your two options.

Good for you. I am 63 and go to a gym and work out on all the weight machines there three times a week. Will miss this week as my wife and I will be busy cooking for our families thanks giving.

Yeah he's not in a good place... Not at all. He's not alone there's countless others as well and you don't see them moving around well into their 80s. Those that big lucky enough to live that long become all but bed ridden. Most don't get to 70 and it wouldn't surprise me if he barely makes 60 if he doesn't make some drastic changes ASAP.

Impartial view here:

I don't know your history with the other poster, and I am not going to even comment on the topic debated. Hopefully you see me as someone fairly reasonable not looking to stir shit up.

This back and forth with threats to ban based on a comment that was fairly innocuous: not a good look for a moderator.

I appreciate the work you do here to keep the board up and running, it is probably not worth the compensation. We all get tipped over the edge now and again, no judgement.

I still listen to some Minneapolis talk radio after living there a while back - Glen Mason is a weekly guest on one show. Last year Mason brought this same thing up on the air, and that was coming from a place of concern and a guy he considered a friend.

It might be time for an intervention from his friends. Maybe they've tried. If it's drugs or booze, people often step in. This shouldn't be any different.

Good for both of you! Do you know Chop from the 3 mile house? He had procedure reversed and as big as ever.

Kind of reminded me of Mark Mangino, the old Kansas HC when they went to the Orange Bowl. Wonder if he is still kicking.

When seeing Bret, unfortunately the word "rotund" pops in my head. I'm not making light of the situation and I do wish him well.
