BREAKING NEWS - Iowa offense now last in the country in YPG

Sam Houston put up a blazing 367 yards last night and we have slipped into last place. Also last in first downs per game. Given that the weather is just now on the cusp of getting bad and that we don't have any teams as hopeless as Western Michigan left on the schedule, my hopes of us finishing at least in 70's or 80's are pretty much dashed.

Look, I don't want to point fingers here, but Ken O'Keefe never finished last.

It should be hard to finish last... You almost have to try to be this bad with how the rules are. You can accidently get 1st downs and move the ball if you're throwing it often enough to draw penalties from the defense. I doubt penalty yards count towards that stat but it wouldn't matter we don't benefit from that hardly either.

The combination of scheme/personnel, situational play calling it all factors. And BF takes the cake. It should've been really tough to be as bad as they were last yr but instead we are worse and there's little hope of that changing as the weather turns and schedule gets tougher. Yippy skippy

Over under 200 yards against Wisky? 150? What would it take to win? More than we are capable of is my guess.

No, I think last year we finished second to last. We're currently sitting at about 250 YPG and many of the teams near that bottom of the list were rent-a-victims for several weeks to open the season and now are facing materially worse competition while we are facing better competition than what we saw in the non-con slate that skewed our results upward. Plus the weather will get worse. With remaining games against Wisconsin and Nebraska, I'm not certain we will materially outperform our current average. I cannot believe it is this bad at the midpoint of the damned season.

I think this stat is misleading. No one has better punting, a better defense, or a better punt returner than Iowa. We're always working with such short fields which limits our yards and makes our offense look bad. Give us a worse defense, punter, and returner and we'd be right up there in the top 50 for sure.

That's quite hilarious

coolade !!!!

I guess you got it right phonetically, but its about as far off from how it is actually spelled as you could get.

(sorry, but I am stuck living in Nebraska and they are quite proud of the fact that Kool-Aid was invented here)

No. Just no. we have to stop playing the game where we use the strength of our special teams and defense to validate how poor our offense is. Yes our defense is strong and yes our special teams does an amazing job of switching the field and pinning our opponent back. However if our defense and special teams weren't as strong the difference we'd be seeing wouldn't be an increase in offensive production, but rather a huge jump in loses replacing wins on the season and those seasons already in the record books.

It would be.....
If there weren't only 24 teams with worse offensive scoring averages than Iowa.
So, counting ties,
There are 104 of 130 teams that are better at scoring than Iowa. And they all do it with presumably longer fields.

Of note, there are two teams tied at 21.8 points per game:
Iowa and.....
Iowa State

Also of note:
Big 10 West teams with fewer than 21.8 points per game:
MN: 21.7
MSU: 21.7
Indiana: 20.8
Illinois: 19.2
Nebraska 19.2

Also also of note:
Wisconsin is at 31.4, roughly 50th in rank.

This is the most offensive minded time in college football history and never has been as pass happy as this.

Sad thing when thinking about being dead last is that we'd be dead last in 1989 as well.

They haven't been that consistently short.

Absolutely. Also, we have a kicker who is money from 50+, so once we get to that range, no need risking a turnover and trying to get closer. Plus, we have the classiest coach in CFB history who will do everything within his power to make his opponents feel like they are in the game; he cares about those guys on the other sideline! So, no need to rack up unnecessary yards or points...get what you need to secure the victory, and don't be greedy.

You take all of this into account, and we are realistically a top-10 offense.

This speech is up there with win one for the gipper. I’m inspired.

For a team that is 5-1, this feels like 0-6. All the negativity has sucked the joy out of winning football games. If Iowa ends up 10-2 or 5-7, the program is definitely at a crossroads.

Thanks for pointing out my glaring omission. I agree, with this added in, it does move us from what I thought would be a top 50 offense to a top 10 offense...top 15 at the worst.
