Brands Bro's Time to Go

Technically, yes they are. But as the OP mentioned, they only had1 takedown in 4 matches. That is pretty pathetic and unacceptable by Iowa standards.

They, for the most part, wrestled not to lose yesterday. That's how I saw it. Not aggressive in any way at all. Like you said above. 1 take down in 4 finals matches. Not only unacceptable by Iowa standards. That's unacceptable for most teams standards.

when iowa wrestled missouri, missouri had 3 #1 ranked wrestlers. those wrestlers had a combined 1 take down during this match - the way the rules are now - 1 take down can win a match between two equal in quality wrestlers - stalling is not called - so get your take down and stall your way to victory. wrestlers afraid to make mistakes because that one mistake can cost them the match. don't blame the athlete/the coach, blame the leaders of the sport - things need to change. wrestling needs to be done in the center of the mat, not on the edge.

Excellent post. I am an avid wrestling fan and could hardly stand to watch many of the championship matches yesterday. (165 match was the exception)
#1. Increase the mat size
#2. As soon as one body part from either wrestler touches outside the boundary lines, stop the damn match and get them back in the circle. So much of every match now is spent on the edge where nothing is going to happen. 1/2 of the damn match is wasted away without any chance of a point being scored where the referees are letting the wrestlers hang on the edge.
#3. Take away riding time point.
#4. Award points, starting with the FIRST stalling call.
#5. When a wrestler stands up, trying to escape and is pushed out of bounds without trying to take the wrestler back to the mat, call stalling.

Wrestlers have made an art of stalling without getting called. The OSU 125 pounder yesterday got a takedown early and did absolutely nothing the rest of the match. It used to be only the heavy weights wrestled matches like this one. Now even the lighter weights do nothing, most of the match.

You know why all these other teams nationwide are getting better?? Because Tom can't recruit nationwide!! You can't expect Gable results if you can't get the best in the country!! Hawk wrestling fans should be incensed that We are not dominating at this time of the year! We have to put a thumb in our back and make it happen, placing is not an option. Every year must have an expectation of winning it all!! How far have we fallen? In 83 Gable had 9 big ten champs, in 86 He had 5 champs. Gable had a goal to have 10 Iowa wrestlers on the mat in the finals and everybody else on the other side. We are not shooting high enough, but if you don't have the most talented wrestlers it isn't going to happen. Recruit , Recruit, Recruit!!!!

No one will ever duplicate what Gable did so you may as well give up on that one. Cael inherited some great kids at Penn State and won a few titles..He won nothing at ISU. How'd his team do this past weekend? Other Big Ten teams have raised the level of their programs too. Back in the day, it was Gable and the 9 dwarfs in the Big 10.

John Smith of Okie State is one of the greatest wrestlers and coaches ever. How has he been doing lately?
I wish Iowa would dominate like they once did, but IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.

Haven't scholarship rules changed a bunch since Gable as well. Now you only have 9.9 scholarships to divide between the team (which has 10 starter).

The constraints on financial aid breeds parity.

yes they have. lots have changed - but message boards bring out the 'fire the coach' experts like none other.

good point.

Not a very knowledgeable statement. Half of this year's starting line-up are from outside the state of Iowa. A sixth lives in Iowa, but wrestled across the boarder in Nebraska.

Hey, if you're happy with mediocrity, fine by me. But then stop spending so much state money on a minor sport that doesn't win anything. I'm thinking that the field hockey budget should be just fine. Heck, the field hockey team won as many Big 10 titles as the actual wrestling team, so maybe we should just get them wrestle in the field hockey off-season.

Hey, if you're happy with mediocrity, fine by me. (Lol @ perennial top 5 national team + current Big Ten champs = Mediocre)

But then stop spending so much state money ($0 state money spent, so we're good, right?) on a minor sport that doesn't win anything (Lol. Just won Big Ten championship. Good shot at National title in couple weeks. Not to mention 23x Nat'l champs + 33x Big champs).

I'm thinking that the field hockey budget should be just fine (Let's see, Iowa wrestling generates about 3x the entire revenue of all womens' and mens' non-football/basketball programs COMBINED... what was your point again?).

Heck, the field hockey team won as many Big 10 titles as the actual wrestling team (just a total factual fail here), so maybe we should just get them wrestle in the field hockey off-season (lol, wut?).

.

Thank you for chiming in, Mr. Brands. They didn't win the Big 10 championship, and if they have any self-respect, they will never mention it again.

If that is the case, then the Hawkeye football team can't claim their shared titles either??

Seriously? Tom and Terry Brands is who we are. Yes PSU had a remarkable run, but we were right on the mix.

You want to go back and gamble with a guy like jimmy Z? Hire some new assistants- maybe.....I would be extremely happy we have these guys cause there is nobody out there that has that mentality in college coaching. I still don't understand how sombody can get upset with a big ten title and go into NCAA's with 10 guys (8 seeded)... Direct your attention to Ferentz bud...

Well...we did basically fire jimmy Z for what brands bros have done last few years...everyone gives Tom a pass though because he acts mad and intense. Blames the athletes...yet other sports it's the coaches fault.

Jimmy Z was fired because he finished 6th in the big ten his last year and 29 dual losses during his time at Iowa. He also had 7 dual losses his final year including losses to Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois and Nebraska.

Guys just get better under Brands, right? Right? Especially this senior class, right?

Do you suppose John Smith at Okie State and Jay Robinson at Minnesota should be fired, too? Seems they are struggling to wins titles too.

Much more balance out there nowadays.

Get it through your head.
THERE WILL NEVER AGAIN BE A RUN IN COLLEGE WRESTLING LIKE THE ONE GABLE HAD.

Zero. Zilch. Nada. Nothing. None.

Tom Brands, with the power of the Iowa wrestling name, won as many meaningful titles as they did at AIB.

Oklahoma State, with the power of the Oklahoma State Wrestling name, has not won a title for about 10 years.
Fire John Smith. Fire John Smith. It is amazing how stupid many of you "casual" wrestling" fans are. You show up on the board at NCAA tournament time hoping to jump on the bandwagon to the title and when it doesn't happen, you whine around like little school girls.

Brands took over a program from Zalesky that had finished 8th in the NCAAs. 8th! Unheard of for Iowa. I liked Jimmy Z. as a wrestler but as a coach, the program bottomed out. He rode the coat tails of Gable for a few years to win 3 titles but then the program tanked. In two years, Brands started a string of 3 consecutive titles. We all want titles every year, but that is not going to happen anymore. It took UCLA Basketball fans a number of years to figure that out too.
There are many good coaches out there. (Many from the Iowa Program) The state of Iowa is not a wrestling hotbed anymore. Still pretty fair but nothing like Ohio and Pennsylvania and even other states now.

It is a different wrestling world these days.
