None of Wegher's numbers were eye popping in any way to an NFL scout, PLUS he has baggage......The NFL will take chances all day long on supremely talented players, they don't do the same for guys who are a dime a dozen. Wegher doesn't stand out at all with those numbers, he played against inferior competition, and he has baggage. The NFL wouldn't touch him with a 10' pole on draft day even if he was 20 years old.
Were his numbers eye-popping? No. But it's not like every player in the league has eye-popping numbers. And his baggage is overrated. It happened years ago, and it wasn't nearly as serious as a lot of what you see in the NFL these days (and Ray McDonald isn't supremely talented). Let's stop pretending he's the second coming of Pac-Man Jones or something.
You said the reason he wouldn't make the NFL is his age, and that is what I was addressing, cause that is simply not true. The guy had more problems than just Iowa, he flaked out of Oklahoma before he even started there. That, combined with very avg. numbers at best, and the fact he played against terrible competition is why he won't be drafted.
Marshawn Lynch's combine numbers (in common events with Wegher's pro day)
40: 4.46
Vertical: 35.5 inches
Bench press: 20 reps
Wegher's numbers
40: 4.48
Vertical: 37 inches
Bench press: 23 reps
Wegher didn't do the 20 yard shuttle or 3-cone drill. But Lynch's shuttle was the worst among all running backs at the 2007 combine and his 3-cone drill time was middle of the road. Wegher's numbers are well above adequate for an NFL back, and even his brief stint with Oklahoma was four years ago. That's ancient history. His age is by far the biggest obstacle he faces, especially considering his position.
Apples and pineapple. I'd bet 95% of college track athlete's could beat those numbers. It doesn't mean they are NFL RB's. You prove you are an NFL running back by playing the sport at a high level (D1) and put up good/great numbers VS good/great competition.
I said that Weghers numbers don't stand out, because they don't. Now if he put up the rushing number like he did vs NAIA competition, but did it at a Power 5 school like Lynch, then you got something. Until then it is apples and pineapple.
I'm still laughing at "Iowa State" and "pro day" in the same sentence.
Maybe he gets drafted, maybe he doesn't. But it won't be because he can't hack it from an athleticism standpoint.
he had extremely avg. combine number and didn't play against good competition. They day any RB for NAIA gets drafted with those numbers I'll eat my words. Until then you got nothing, I mean absolutely nothing to prove a player at his level with those number ever getting drafted.
Danny Woodhead, Fred Jackson may have not gotten drafted, but they stuck on a NFL rosters.
There is no middle class in the NFL right now. NFL teams are looking for young, cheap labor. I saw enough of BW his first year at Iowa to know he can make an NFL roster. Not saying he will, but it wouldn't shock me if he does. If his "baggage" is having a kid or two out of wedlock(not condoning it) I think NFL teams can get past it.
