Bold Predictions

I like your bold predictions.
I'd say you can mark the Stanley ones down.
I guess I would throw out there for my bold predictions:

I think Chauncey will have more sacks then aj this season.

Our punter will be more then pedestrian and be selected all big ten punter.

We will go 10-2 in the regular season, beat Michigan in a rematch that they lost earlier in the year (1 of the 2 losses), keep the big ten from the college football playoff, and give Ferentz 11 wins to pass joe paterno on the all time big ten wins list. I believe that is Ferentz goal, and that this will cause him to retire during bowl prep, he'll coach his last game in the bowl game, and Brian will take over from his dad after the bowl game.

I predict we will have three players on our defense with 8 or more sacks this season. AJ, Chauncey, and off the bench vanvalkanberg.

Nope, though you mentioning Hartlieb helped. I still maintain that Vandenberg was a much better QB than his Sr. season. Not on the level of those others, mind you, but that offensive transition basically ruined him.

Also, I'm far from a Kirk detractor, but that could also be attributed to CFB in general becoming more pass happy during his tenure.

I would not have guessed Vandenberg!

It's going to be yet another "Norm Parker" type of year where the defense carries the offense and overcomes several bonehead offensive miscues.

The one reason I think iowas offensive numbers might struggle is that they play a lot of excellent defenses. Iowa State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State, northwestern all will have very tough defenses...and that's nearly half the schedule.

Very observant!

So I'm starting to get really pumped up for football. With the Kids day practice today, I want to throw out a few "bold predictions" that I think could happen. Now I don't think all of these will happen, but I do fell a couple will take place this year. I am probably more bullish than some on this year. Anyway here are some "Bold Predictions".

1) Stanley throws for over 3000 yards and 26 TD's. He breaks Chuck Longs TD record at Iowa, and finishes up being 4nd in B1G career TD's.

2) Iowa goes 9-3 and win the West (10-2 if we can get out of Ames with a win).

3) Iowa's offense will average more PPG this year than last year. This would mean that Iowa will average more than 31 PPG for the 2nd consecutive year. Iowa has not averaged more than 30 PPG in back to back years for a long time. I have a site that goes back to 2009, and even the 2009 season (24 PPG) and the 2010 team (29 PPG) cracked the 30 PPG barrier. The 2015 team was the only other team in the past decade to average 30+ PPG. I kind of think Iowa has probably never averaged 30+ PPG in back to back years.

4) Iowa will have 3 WR that will catch more than 35 passes. You have to go back to 2011 for the last time Iowa had 3 WR catch 30 passes in a year (McNutt, Keenan Davis, and Martin-Manley).

5) This is be Iowa's best defensive line since 2010. Future pros off this years D line will include AJ, Gholston, Lattimore and Nixon. If we get quality depth contribution from some of the other players, this will be a top 10 national D line.
I like your thoughts Dean! It's time for Brian Ferentz to step up and make a difference. We know Phil Parker will get the job done. GO HAWKS!!

I am not going to forget hock and fant racing down the field for big catches or finding open spots to pull in big passes and all the TD catches, but I know what you are trying to mean.

On the TE situation, I think a regression to the mean is due. The thing is, the average TE situation at Iowa is still pretty darn good. I think Cook, Beyer, and Wieting would start for all but a handful of teams in the country. They will provide a safety valve and Brian will use them well, but we can't count on them to bail us out like Hock and Fant did the past couple years.

Fortunately, I think the RBs and WRs will help a lot more in the passing game this year and we'll end up having a more balanced attack. And a more balanced team through the air can be exponentially more dangerous if a QB has confidence in all his targets. IMO, Smith-Marsette is key here. If he can break free for a big gainer 1-2 times per game, he'll start to take the a safety over the top and out of the box which will leave Brian all kinds of room underneath to abuse them with other guys like Nico, IKM, and Sargent.

The last 2 seasons we had a 3-year starting quarterback (Tate - 2006 and Stanzi - 2010) and a stud DL, both seasons imploded.

We have what, 3 coaches and 0 players from those years involved in this season. (KF, KOK, and PP). I mean that is about as relevant as how well Chuck Long or Matt Rodgers did as 3rd year starting QB's.

I agree while it's in the back of my mind, I don't think it's fair to attribute something to a group of players that occurred when none of them were part of the program. While it has been part of the history of the program it has nothing to do with the history of this team. Current players should let their play rewrite the history books and not let former teams limit what they are capable of.

Just because Nebby won a few titles in the 90s doesn't mean anything now. Never mind they're still as prominent as they ever were that was a bad reference.

I think he was just saying don't automatically assume Iowa will be better just because they have a 3 year QB and a stud DL. For whatever reason, injuries or lack of depth, or tough schedule, or hidden drug problems, or whatever, sometimes things just fall apart.

But I hope you are right, that past history will not be a good predictor for this year's team.

I know how it feels the same, but in my opinion, this is a horrible take that neglects the importance of the rest of the team.

In 2006 we lost Greenway and Hodge from the year before. Their loss to the defense cannot be overstated. The 2010 team lost AJ Edds and Pat Angerer, also from the linebacker spot. The loss of multiple NFL draft picks at the Linebacker position who were also multi-year starters is an objectively bigger deal than the return of solid, but flawed college QBs.

As for the DL, they need experienced backers behind them that have a feel for which gaps will need to be filled. They can't do it all. In both 2006 and 2010, our backers were absolutely abused.

This year, we return our linebackers AND our stud d-line, with solid DB's all around. There are no obvious holes to fill. Also, instead of losing 2 offensive tackles to the draft after 2009, we return two likely 1st rounders. The main losses from last year are obviously 2 NFL TEs and a really solid LB/Safety hybrid in Amani Hooker. On these points, I'd argue the TE losses are overblown. Last year was just an embarrassment of riches that I think everyone would agree didn't get utilized to their fullest potential. This year, we are returning perhaps our best blocking TE from last year as well as two solid backups. Losing Hooker definitely hurts, but that's a spot that was specifically designed to get our best athletes on the field and put them in a position to help us.

All this to say what we already know, this year is neither 2006 nor 2010. Crazy things could happen and we could tank, especially given the absolute monster of a schedule we have lined up. However, it is a rare thing in Iowa City to have a roster this experienced and talented from top to bottom.

And the offense was awesome in 2010 until we got down to 3rd string OGs and RBs. That Stanzi season would go down as one of the greatest QB seasons in Iowa history if the D would have just held on to a few more 4th quarter leads. Last I checked, Stanzi didn't play LB on that team.

Dean wont be angry at KF and wont insult anyone.

Should I be worried about your weird obsession with me?
