Biggest benefit to the recruiting class might be practice

I understand what you believe after being on this board for awhile. I just tend to disagree with most things you say, which is fine. It is just the results show in no way improvement and while the new class will add depth it will not be the HUGE upgrade in talent that is needed. The results have "vindicated" the realists from the last off season and unfortunately will most likely do so again this off season.

If only it could have stopped them from ******* and moaning about everything involving the Iowa basketball program. If you're a realist, that means you saw this coming, right?

If you're a realist, don't you think you'd be able to find one positive in this train wreck of a season? Everything you post about the Iowa basketball program is negative. The next positive thing you say about anything involving the team (coach, assistants, players) will be the first.

For a team and coach you seem to hate so much?

Well I live for basketball so yes. I don't hate the players or the coach, I just realize they aren't a good Big Ten basketball team which is not a sin for any of the players. It is however completely the fault of Lick. I wish you could have been around the Nebraska program when Collier was there, because it is scary how similar the situations are. The bad thing is that Nebraska had zero basketball tradition or fan support before Collier got there. Iowa at least had some tradition of basketball "excellence" and fan support but that seems to be completely gone now.

Well, I can tell you with certainty if Barta fires Lick after this season things still can get worse. The hope would be that a new coach could keep all the current players and keep the current recruits. But, some of you think that the current players and recruits are not big 10 worthy anyway? We could and probably would see mass defections in both the current players and recruits. I am not against Barta letting Lick go after this season, nor would I be surprised. I just don't see it getting any better with a new coach next year, but I do with Lickliter. And, I can't possibly see how any of you will be any happier next year with or without Lickliter.

That certainly is a possibility Forever. There is a chance we could lose some recruits or current players if Lick were let go. I have a gut feeling that we wouldn't lose any of the frosh coming in(no way I can prove this of course). I just don't think these recruits are that in love with this system and staff that a change would make them pack it up and move on.

It's possible though. Especially if somehow Pearl or someone else got the job. Maybe some of these kids wouldn't want to play in something that fast paced or with a coach like Pearl. Had Tucker not already transferred, I think he definitely wouldn't have stuck around in that hypothetical situation.

A lot of our current players' skill set do not match up with this system. Bobby said something very similar to that last night on the radio. And it's obvious. That's why I'm not upset with the talent we have. I think the right coach with the right system could do wonders with this current team. No championships of course...maybe not even dancing. But we would see improvement and exciting ball.

Forever...I usually enjoy reading your posts, but I think it is a stretch at best to think that existing players or recruits would transfer because we hire a new coach. I admit it's a possibility, but I think that same chance is as high, if not higher if Lick stays. At least that's what history supports.

And no, it would be next to impossible for Iowa to have a worse record than this year, even if you were the coach. I'll base that on the fact that it has never happened in the HISTORY of Iowa hoops.

Either way, history is not on your side on either argument you make, nor is common sense.

I agree with what you say here about the current situation. My belief is that if Barta could make a splash with a coach people would be ok with the mass defections (which I don't think would happen unless the coach told players what Huggins told Bawinkel when he took over at WVA). I think that a different system could work with some of these players like Fuller, Cole, and Gatens as well which would most likely at worst be a repeat of this season. And who knows, maybe this coach could bring some players with him from his old gig to add onto the current class.

Asking Barta to make this huge decision is a risk again, and I do not have much faith. I cannot stomach this current situation much longer though, and I hope to just cut the losses as they are right now.

I also agree with you in the thinking that this will not happen though.

I didn't mean to piggy back your post. I think you possess superior typing skills because you pumped yours out a lot quicker than I did.

Nobody knows what would happen if a new coach comes in. Many of us think we know the relationship Lick has with the players and many think it is not very good. We have no idea. We have no idea why the four recruits want to come to Iowa. It certainly is not because of the tradition and the last few years of Hawkeye basketball. I have to think much of it has to do with Lick and his staff. So yes, it is possible we could lose some of the existing players and some recruits if Lick were fired. Of course that is not a certainty.

As a Lick supporter, I have stated all along that if we lose some of the core players, he should be let go. So that should be one point we can all agree on.

So, I think common sense on my part is very much in play on my thought process. I am a little confused as to why you would think otherwise, but that is your perogative?

How bout this bit of common sense: Is Iowa really going to fork out nearly $2.4 million to let Lick go? Some can go into how they are losing revenue at the gates, so maybe that would trump a buyout, who knows?

If you all could somehow guarantee me that Pearl would take the job, keep the current roster and recruits and bring in a couple of his own recruits, then I am all in!:)

Other than Fuller can somebody please tell me who is good enough to transfer somewhere else? Maybe Gatens but where would he go? I just dont see anybody leaving if Lick is let go.

Forever is right that the decision to keep or fire lick will be money related, not based on who may or may not transfer

Things cant get worse. Even if the entire team transfers i bet we could still win 10 games and lose multiple B10 games by 25 with a bunch of JUCO's. I dont think we will ever see another Iowa team win 10 or less games ever again

I am certain they are all good enough to transfer somewhere, whether it be a mid-major, DII, DIII, who knows. So would we be content as a fanbase with a new coach playing 5 or 6 walk ons. It's a possibility? And no, Iowa would not win 10 games.

Is the JUCO route really the best way? Bring in a bunch of athletes who may not graduate and screw up the scholarship situation down the road. I don't think it is as easy as just firing Lick and hiring a new coach as some of you would like to make it out to be?

You really think there would be 5 or 6 walk ons playing? Get real. Not everyone would leave, and they could fill open spots with JUCO's. Williams and Alexander would sign up right away. And not every recruit will decommit

We will have a better season no matter what happens next season

And you made my point - players arent going to transfer to DII or DIII or a mid major just because we get a new coach. Would you rather be a player for Iowa or some DII or DIII school? This team doesnt have a Wesley Johnson or Tyler Smith that could go to a top level DI program

I was using that as an extreme example. Personally i dont think we will have many transfers if Lick is fired. My point was that if everyone happened to leave we could field a team and win more than 10 games. It wouldnt happen though, because it wouldnt need to happen imo

I still think Lick can turn it around and it all starts with everyone staying and the new recruiting class getting to campus. Again, I would not be shocked if Lick were let go after this season, so I guess we will all have to see how it plays out the rest of this week and the few weeks to follow. I am not happy with how this season has turned out, but I lowered my expectations after Kelly, et. al. transferred last year. I have seen several individual progressions this season, which have given me some excitement for next year. It seems odd to take heat for being optimistic about a team we all love and bleed for, but that is the nature of a message board I guess?

You are correct Duffman, they will be much deeper next year which will benefit them in practice significantly. This will make them better in games. Assuming nobody leaves of course. With that being said, Iowa will be much better next year. I have said it all along, been ripped for it, but will stick to my guns.

The antagonists from Haternation can't get me down. I just think some of them would get tired posting the same thing over and over and over again. Certainly they have something better to do in life? Maybe not, but I fail to see how three years of Iowa basketball being bad really affects their lives much in the long run? But, you would think, by the way that some of them post that their hearts and souls are being ripped out.
You amaze me...give some reason other then we will have better practices for a reason to hold out hope. Did you look at the all conference teams??? Young aren't they...our powerhouse guys are honorable mention. 5 teams in the conference will be pulling in top 20 classes...ours is top 7 in the conference only. This guy can't coach, is over his head, succeeded only because of Matta's recruiting at Butler. All I ever hear is wait till next year, we will be so much better. You are assuming nobody else is going to get better. I appreciate your optimism...but reality should set in for you guys sometime. Facts are facts, obviously we have some communication issues, we have a recruiting issue, we have a system issue, we have a 3 year run that is unequaled in Iowa history. Your right there is a lot to look forward to and build upon. If he had one difference maker coming I could buy the argument...I am in Bobby Hansen's camp, until we get one we have a team of role players.

Its admirable you are still optimistic. I was still hopeful until the wheels fell off down the stretch. I cant take anymore :)

Forever...I'm not upset that you are optimistic about the future, I'm really not. I wish I could be as well. Unfortunately, I can't see how Lick's reign can possibly end well. The first 3 years he has broke records most of us didn't think were possible.

I agree that some of the players have progressed, but I don't think they are doing so at a rate that can make them compete for an upper division finish in the Big 10 next year.

I believe, like most that Lick will be fired at some point (this year or next) as it seems improbable at best that we finish .500 in the Big 10 next year. So, either way you are stuck with your same dilema, which is players MAY transfer when a new coach arrives, whether it is this year or next.

Therefore, is it better to hold off the inevitable (or probable) or to make a change now? Hopefully that change would be positive and I think at this point it's very hard to argue that a change would do this program any harm.

If it was a 50/50 or even a 40/60 chance Lick could turn this around in year 4, I would agree with you. But I think the realistic odds are more like 20/80 at best, which is why it's time to make a change.
