Biggest benefit to the recruiting class might be practice

I got to thinking this morning (dangerous I know) the biggest benefit the recruiting class for next year might have is giving our team quality practice. As it stands we don't have enough bodies in practice to work much of anything. In order to improve an athelete needs to be pushed in practice and I don't think we have the people to do it.

Next year we should have a full two units with two complete lineups...

This alone should be extremely beneficial to the team.

After practices like this Iowa should begin matching up much better with Minnesota, OSU, Mich St, Mich, and so on. The athleticism will definitely be there. The extra year also will make the upper classmen quicker and faster, which help on defense and with coach Lickliter coaching them up Iowa should make their move next year.

We're turning the corner.
There is light at the end of the tunnel.
We won't have such a young team next year.
This recruiting class will help.
The practice facility is being built.
The system will work.
The system will work.
The system will work.

We're turning the corner. Straight into the abyss
There is light at the end of the tunnel. There sure is...seeing exactly what we have in our head coach is enlightning...worst 3 year run EVER.
We won't have such a young team next year. These guys by the time they get to Iowa have played more upper level ball then guys did 10-15 years ago. They are not young after 1/2 the conference schedule. Do you not realize eveyone else is either young or more talented on their bench then we are.
This recruiting class will help. With what??? practice maybe...they are not B10 ready players.
The practice facility is being built. Good thing for the next guy.
The system will work. Ask Collier
The system will work. Ask Matta (he ditched it the year he left Butler)
The system will work. Ask Iowa fans how it works....

Practice doesn't actually make you that much better unless you practice properly, I practiced golf all the time saw no improvment until I changed pros. Now I practice better and have gotten much better results..

Terrific insight, you really brought a lot to this conversation BAM

What do you want him to say? People have been saying what you are just now seeing since the off season. I don't really understand why it took some fans so long to see what was painfully obvious at the Black and Gold Scrimmage. Even when Tucker was playing, he was the slowest guard in the Big Ten which meant that Payne never faced legit Big Ten speed in practice outside of LaVell Jordan. So far the recruiting class next year will do nothing to help with this issue.

What do you want him to say? .

It seems to me if you don't have anything to add on a particular subject you shouldn't say anything at all.

And yes I understood his post was sarcastic that was my point. You essentially came in to a thread about how 4-5 new bodies will help us practice better next year and said "Iowa Sucks". Sometimes these boards are like having a discussion with 5 year olds.

You apparently can't appreciate sarcasm, Duff and Loess.

You are correct Duffman, they will be much deeper next year which will benefit them in practice significantly. This will make them better in games. Assuming nobody leaves of course. With that being said, Iowa will be much better next year. I have said it all along, been ripped for it, but will stick to my guns.

The antagonists from Haternation can't get me down. I just think some of them would get tired posting the same thing over and over and over again. Certainly they have something better to do in life? Maybe not, but I fail to see how three years of Iowa basketball being bad really affects their lives much in the long run? But, you would think, by the way that some of them post that their hearts and souls are being ripped out.

You can have them practice all you want but you can't teach talent nor will increased practice bring great results. The better competition could bring a marginal improvement to the team, but it's not going to make up for the deficit in athleticism we have compared with most B 10 teams.

To be fair, we haven't seen the new guys play so hopefully, they will bring added skills and athleticism.

I'm guessing that, with the four freshman 2 will work out well, 1 will be just so-so and 1 won't make it. Just seems like that's how the odds work on these kind of things.

Practice might not make guys more atheltic but it would certainly help them execute on the floor. I can't even imagine trying to learn an offense without being able to practice against reasonably skilled and capable defenders.

It's just not possible for Lick, Neari, Bawinkle, Cougill, and Brommer as a unit to push our starters in practice. Again I can't fathom how a team could learn anything without being able to scrimmage at all.

You're right, the freshmen will be better for practice for the upperclassmen. But that isn't the only hole that needs to be filled. And if a good practice squad is all we can hope for out of these freshmen, then next year is going to be miserable.

And the expectation are lowered before the season even begins. Nice. So you are saying that we are just beginning the rebuilding process 4 years in to Licks tenure at Iowa. NOW we have enough bodies to practice THEN we add quality depth THEN we start to win again.

Frustrating at the inability for some to understand that basketball is about individual talents and not some great concept about "heart".

Let me add anothe thought that may be new to some of you.

Practice Makes Permanent, Not Perfect.

We have seen what practice has done over the previous three years.

Next year is Year 1.
