Oh, that new rule that Big Ten teams can't play FCS teams like Northern Iowa anymore...

Nevermind!

Now the rule has been tweaked so that Big Ten teams can play 1 FCS team in the years when they have 4 home and 5 road conference games.

So in Iowa's case, that means 2018, 2020, 2022, etc. It is ok to play an FCS team. Iowa is already scheduled to play UNI in 2018 so that works out.

Personally, I would be glad to keep UNI on the schedule. It is a fun in-state game that draws lots of local interest early in the season. And it keeps our tax dollars in-state rather than sending them to some obscure school in another state.

There is a small handful of FCS schools that are formidable and playing would probably be better than playing a low tiered Div I school such as New Mexico St or Kansas. I'd think your SOS would be better playing a top FCS like UNI over the likes of the Buffalos.

Would be great if the NCAA would allow 1 preseason game to the schedule and make it mostly against the lower tier FBS and/or FCS teams. The results won't matter to your regular season record. Therefore if your worried about starters getting hurt don't play them much or at all. Also allow true freshman that might redshirt to play without burning their redshirt. Then since 1 of the cupcake games is out of the way hopefully more teams would schedule up a bit for the non-con.

Meanwhile, among the other B10 schools...
Their ADs are scheduling teams that actually get their fans REALLY EXCITED to have a shot at a key-win right out the gate!
I looked up "bland oatmeal" the other day and right there was a pic of Barta.
I'm shocked.

It wasn't fun in 2009 when we had to have two miracle blocked field goals in the last seconds to win. That would have been a season-ruiner right there.

do u really think Barta has the last word on non-con scheduling? kf says if he wants to play someone somewhere or not.

This^^^

Barta has as much influence over Hawkeye Football as the Asian lady selling pork on a stick on Melrose.

But I like her way more.

I was hoping that they'd stick to it. Don't see how we gain much by playing UNI and other FCS teams. You win and it's because you were supposed to anyway. You lose and it's a disaster.
I agree. But it just means you are allowed to play them, it doesn't mean you have to.

Never said he had the last word.
Agree with you that our HCFL (Head Coach for Life) calls the shots, but it actually is the ADs who set up the agreements with the other schools.

The fact that Kirk/Gary both think it is okay to schedule FCS teams says A LOT about them . . . a cynical ploy to guarantee that 7th win. A win which is contractually worth more than 2 million dollars.

This was all about money and TV exposure. Think about it...forcing the drop of FCS teams would more than likely mean a 6-6 B10 team may go 5-7...and not be bowl eligible. It's all about the Benjamins.

What tax dollars would those be?
