Nebraska and Missouri have been given an ultimatum by the Big 12 and told they have until this Friday to decide if they want to remain in the conference or entertain the possibility of joining the Big Ten, two highly placed officials of two Big 12 schools have told the Statesman. The deadline was given to the pair of schools by the Big 12 presidents during the league meetings held in Kansas City this last week. “Nebraska has until 5 p.m. on Friday to tell us what they’re going to do,†one school official said, adding that he has heard it is a possibility they could extend that deadline to June 15. “The same deal for Missouri. They have to tell us they’re not going to the Big Ten or …†Or at least six Big 12 schools, including Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, will be inclined to accept an invitation to join the Pac-10 Conference. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado are the other three schools that could bolt what would be a dissolving Big 12. Nebraska and Missouri could be taking the risk that they might not be extended invitations from the Big Ten, which has said it could take up to 18 months to decide whether to expand its current membership of 11 schools. “I’ve talked to the Pac-10,†said the Big 12 school administrator, who expected the speculation involving the Big 12 to be resolved within two weeks. “There is an invitation. When it comes, it’ll come fast.†One Pac-10 athletic director told the Statesman on Saturday, “There’s still a lot that has to happen. It’s nowhere near done. At this point, we have not been presented any definite plans. Said another political figure heavily connected to Texas, “I know the war drums are beating. This is way beyond gossip."

I would assume CU would face the same deadline as NU or MU...and I doubt the Big Ten would have much interest in them.

If anything this should prove there is something going on between the Big 10 and Mizzou and Nebby. Otherwise there would be no issue and the Big 12 would be back to one giant circle jerk.

Funny to think the Big 12 has any leverage. Their TV package sucks. Half of their northern division brings nothing to the table in terms of TV ratings.
All this does is escalate the time table for Nebby and Mizzou to join the Big 10, if that is what the Delaney wants.

Personally, I'd take Nebby,Notre Dame and an east coast school and cap the league at 14 teams, but not sure that will happen. If ND balks, screw 'em and bring Mizzou on board.

Just my take.

um..........So they tell the big 12 they are going to listen to the big 10.....Then what? The big 12 sucks and who wouldnt listen? What the hell would they possibly do when Nebraska and Missouri says they are going to wait and see. Along with how many other teams considering going to the pac 10. Again, the big 12 blows.

If NU and MU ignore...the Texas schools jump to Pac 10. Then NU and MU are left hanging...hoping for a Big Ten invite but far from certain of one. Not a position they want to be in...so my guess is they will recommit to the Big 12 to avoid being in that very vulnerable position, though there are certainly no guarantees. If they don't recommit...then it all becomes VERY chaotic.

so instead of being left hanging by ignoring, why not tell the big 12 they are committed to staying but then work under the table and back out later if and when the big 10 makes an offer? I understand there will be some kind of penalty by leaving the big 12 but regardless when they decide to leave, it will be the same....So why not leave the big 12 hanging instead of themselves?

Did the Big 12 express what would happen if NU and UM decided to entertain possible Big Ten offers? I can't imagine they're saying "get in now, or get out now". More like they're trying to get a grip on how many teams they may have to replace. They wouldn't want to be thinking they need to replace 4 teams and then find themselves needing to scramble for two more at the last minute.

It sounds as if it is the six schools awaiting a Pac10 offer that want a decision form NU and MU. If they decide to stay in the Big12, there would likely be some sort of increased buyout if they backed out later. I guarantee that if Texas turns down an offer trying to keep the Big12 intact, they will have huge financial assurances from NU and MU that they will stay. All I know is that this is going to be an interesting week.

Considering the mess that the Big 12 is in right now, one would think that the schools the Pac-10 is interested in would caution the Pac-10 to take it slow. You can't just copy and paste. That's plaigarism on a term paper, and the Big 12 when building a conference.

With that said, I wouldn't expect the schools in the Big 12 (particularly the big boys) to perform another shotgun marriage. They'll be given more than ample time to consider all their options.

It makes me cringe that the Texas legislature could butt into this (again).

Seriously, why the smeg would the Pac-10 ever want Baylor?

I would imagine, as mentioned above, stiff financial penalties would be involved. More than that, though, there are still ethics and college Presidents are unlikely to make powerful commitments only to be secretly undermining them. Such duplicity would be obvious fairly quickly and tremendously humiliating for the university involved. Just not gonna happen.

That said, MU and NU may take the risk. Or the Big Ten may jump forward and make an offer in the next 10 days. If not, the Big 12 will remain intact and make a TV deal with the Pac 10. We'll know very soon which way this thing is going.

Big 12 just needs to let texas go. They are dragging the rest of the big 12 down. It is sad to think one school can flex so much muscle. I don't want them in the big ten. Mizzou and Neb can come abroad. I don't care what happens to the others.

My question is this.. why is the big ten not moving quickly on this? they seemed to be bent on waiting until next year to make a move. Meanwhile the PAc ten is ready to move right now. Big ten, needs to decide what they want, make the offers, get er done now!
