BF calling an awful game

Have to agree this was not a well called game by BF. Hopefully he learns from this. Team could have easily won this game with better offensive play calling, esp. in first half. The D played a monster of a game to hold them to 21. Can't fault their game plan one bit.

This isnt about bad play calling. Its the system. Stanley showed he can do an excellent job if given the chance.

If I were Wadley Id be ticked. If I were Jewell Id be ticked. Iowa had 2 of the 3 best players on the field and maybe the best qb. Its a stupid gimmick system.

McSorley's reads of the defensive front, his legs and speed running, and some big throws he made put him above Stanley in the game. But Stanley played very well. He was a little off early missing a couple throws and I am not counting the early receiver drops.

I would rather see him audible into some nice pass plays.

There were so many stupid KOK tendencies last night. The QB sneak at the 1, no top teams do this crap it's a wasted play. Then you follow it up with a pitch deep in the end zone. Our only option was a quick throw.
The audibles, the runs on 1st an 2nd down. It was all what we were used to when they ran that guy out of town before.

Then we hire a guy who has never called a play in his life. Division II teams wouldn't do this. Iowa will remain a middle of the road team as long as the Ferentz family is at the helm. A good season once every ten years when the schedule is cake is what we produce.

Put Stanley with PSU and he does all those things.

I am really, really, trying to find a reason to disagree with you, but I.....wait....no, I just can't.

Our defense made some really big plays. But, we were also those big defensive plays away from being smoked by 4 touchdowns. I tired of "having a chance to win in the 4th quarter" stuff. Let's go take a game. Geez.

Easily 10 percent of people watching the game could see whatthe PSU linebackers were doing. On Wadleys counter TD Stanley or coaches finally adjusted to the overload. They know how to call plays. It is the system.

Stanley is not near the runner but yes if Nate was with their athletes as a more passing qb he would excel. PSU had 5 really good receivers on the field all the time flooding zones and giving Mcsorley many easy targets. But McSorley hit some really tough passes also.

Nate is excelling at Iowa and he hit some great passes yesterday.

last night was (another) example of Iowa not having the balls to be aggressive on offense. we tell ourselves we give brian a pass (pun intended) in the first quarter for not throwing the ball because of field position. you need to be safe and can't risk a mistake. but then he calls a lateral play (pitch) from one guy standing in our end zone to another standing (7 yards deep) in our end zone and that isn't a risk? fuggin stupid chit like that gets you beat by 2 points. It would be refreshing for brian to come out and say "hey, i didn't do well, last night. that game is on me." because if i was a defensive player, i'd be effing pissed at brian. and if i was phil parker, i'd be in brian's and kok's faces asking them what the fug were they doing last night. but, this is iowa and these are the ferentz', so no accountability will be shown.

We were too conservative with poor field position. The second or third time you get it, you have to try to do something to flip the field. Penn State was playing an aggressive style to stop the running game...at some point, you have to take a deep shot to change field position...it can be like a punt if it's picked. We didn't do that which surprised me. The pitch to Wadley naked in the end zone was really really bad. They were keying on him...not the misdirection. I get the thinking...the Defense was keeping Penn State out of the end zone...so don't do anything to help them...but eventually it just wears down your defense....and it did.

He throws better and reads very well.
Respectfully disagree he overthrows everything. You can hate on McSorley but he's a better QB right now. His running ability puts him ahead. Stanley is young so we will see how he improves.

I think we can all agree KF is the reason the offense at Iowa has sucked 17 out of 20 seasons. Someone else mentioned that the defense stats are horrible when you look at them on paper, but watching the game they played amazing. It was classic bend but don't break. And we've blocked TWO FGs this year. Seems like decades ago when we had multiple blocks in a year.

PSU on offense reminded me of Iowa against MN with Coker. Coker had 250+ rushing yards, yet we couldn't get the ball in the endzone. Had our defense not played lights out, we lose this game by 50 points.

Back to our offense. It's #%$#% ground hog day again and again with this team. How many years do we say that our offense didn't move the ball until we started spreading out the field? Why does KF INSIST we have to run stretch plays on 1st and 2nd down into 10 man fronts for a half before we adjust? Imagine had we come out of the gates with our 2nd half offense? PSU wouldn't have known what to think, and maybe we get some points or even flip the field at least

We are real lucky to have Wadley, had we won the game it would have been two top 5 teams he beat by himself on offense.

I was at a Hawkeye bar in San Diego, and literally everyone in the place would just groan on those stretch runs. We are always going to be like this under KF. It's too bad because we have shown that we can hang with anyone, but our offense just sucks.

When you see him put the ball on the money...the xtra point for 1 example, it took a freat d play to break it up. After the Wyoming game it appears he was told to be safe.

You think So? He is better thrower and likely see the field as well or better, but they are very different in terms of movement ability. So no, he doesn't do all those things. Apples to oranges.

NATE in first big game. Not bad.McSorley sneaky very good. Both skilled.Nate+our receivers sooon much better.BABYsteps add up.Miss jamesb.o-line STILL settling in.

I wonder if that was Brian's doing or his dad's influence.
We all know KF is an offensive genius...
YES this funny!! Coach Cap + Ghost of Gd who knows? And Kok! Kok is very good very happy he is back. But our CAP very good at offense. He unique no?Kok will help much behind scene.Nate?
