What are some of the best freshman years by Iowa basketball players factoring points, rebounds, assists, etc.?

I ask because I am wondering how well our current freshman measure up to some of our best freshman years.

In the modern era of Hawkeye basketball, the gold standard for a freshman year is probably Jess Settles. In his freshman year of 1993-1994, these were his stats:

PPG - 15.3
RPG - 7.5
APG - 2.3
SPG - 1.5
FG% - 56.5%
3FG% - 38.1%
FT% - 84.2%

First Hawkeye ever to record 400 points and 200 rebounds in a freshman year.

So our current freshman are considerably lower stats wise than some of our best ever frosh years. Was just curious. Even with that said, all have done a good job.

Keep in mind, though, that some of the best freshman stats-wise were also on some of the poorer performing teams. Jess Settles freshman year saw Iowa have a losing record that year. Ricky Davis' freshman year saw Iowa only make the NIT. Roy Marble's first year saw Iowa make the NCAA, but get bounced in the 1st round.

Unless a freshman is an "all-world" player, and they typically aren't at Iowa, then a good freshman season, stats-wise, usually means that the team isn't very good....

RDM didn't have the same stellar stats as JS but it wasn't a bad year for a freshman. But AW probably has numbers you're looking for:

RDMAW
PPG5.711.1
RPG2.386.07
APG1.3.89
SPG.68.89
FG%37.927.9
3FG%26.827.9
FT%53.069.9

I think RDM is probably more indicative of what you SHOULD expect from a freshmen. Settles and White were more the high end.

Just my $.02 .. ..

GO HAWKS!!!

Settles came in as a freshmen with a big 10 body. I can still picture him pressuring the in-bound pass on the press and them giving light pressure on the ball handler up the court.

I think he pretty much set the bar for Freshmen as far back as I can remember.

What did Ray Thompson do? I wasn't old enough to remember Lester, but in my opinion, Ray Thompson was the most talented Hawkeye of my lifetime. He was a Big Ten MVP kind of player.

Yeah, I had a brain freeze. I was thinking of Ray Thompson now that I see his name. My vote goes to Ray Thompson...basketball skill only with no consideration for "student" athlete.

Smith was on a bad Iowa team. It was 2006-2007 which was Alford's last year. Iowa was 17-14 overall and 9-7 in the Big 10.

Agree, I was thinking the same just didn't post.
