Best Case Scenario Starting 5 Next Year

Gesell
Oglesby
Uthoff
White
Woody

Rest of rotation- Jok, Olaseni, Dickerson, Clemmons, ?Atwood?

I understand why a lot of fans think this will be next year's starting five. And while these guys have experience they lack athleticism and the ability to create off the dribble which means they'll struggle to score.

At the start of the year I expect the following:

pg - Gesell (he will make major strides and be the leader of the team)
sg - Oglesby (I think he gets the Eric May treatment and get some non-conference starts)
sf - Uthoff (most upside on the team I think he has to play at the 3)
pf - White (he is what he is at this point, best place for him is at the 4 so we put more skill at the 3)
c - Woodbury (he is just touching the surface of his ability watch for a 25 min man with 10+ ppg)

Bench: jok, olaseni, Dickerson, clemmons (if he stays), uhl, Meyer, ellingson

At the start of Big 10:

I expect jok to take the spot from oglesby. He is a better scoring threat with better defensive tools (if he can figure out where to be). Rest I see staying where they are. I feel olaseni and oglesby are better off the bench. I also feel after jok moves into the starting lineup there should never be a lineup with less than 3 starters on the court. Give 2 a breather, then another 2, and keep rotating.

Best case scenario, a scholy frees up so we can get Atwood and Lee.

Without them

I would go

Pg. Gessell/Dickersom.... No clue whos better yet.

Sg. Jok.. we really need his O but hes got to figure out how to play D

Sf. Utoff... Hes got to figure things out too but hes got huge offensive potential.

Pf. Olaseni... More potential than anyone in the conference but hes got to quit playing like a *****.

C. Woody... the light is starting to come on...hes slowing down and realizing how to use his body to initiate contact on offense.

I know in reality White will start but im sick of everything about his game right now..I just hope they arent stupid enough to play him at the 3 anymore.

This team could actually be really good if Jok, Utoff, Gabe and Woody up their games and White atleast develops some level of jump shot and quits playing D like an idiot.

PG: Gesell - He has to become a PG next season; I think he pressed his first two seasons trying to not be the player he was in HS, but the transition is still in progress. Look for him to be a solid PG next season.
SG: Jok - Quit telling me how he plays defense, Iowa needs a guy like Jok to blow it up on the offensive end night in and night out. He has the most potential to be great than anyone else on the roster and it isn't close.
SF: Uthoff - One of the more athletic players, needs to get stronger, but he has good all-around skills and looked like he took two years off.
PF: White - The kid shoots 83% from the line, set up plays for him to catch and shoot from 15 ft anywhere on the floor and he will be scary good.
C: Woodbury - Get someone in the high post who can hit a shot and it will be difficult to double him, I expect Adam to be an all-conference type performer next season, if Iowa just throws him the ball.

Bench:

G: Clemmons - Iowa needs him to be the defensive player he can be. No need to worry about him scoring, just run the team and play defense. The issue he has is he was not a true PG in HS, just like Gesell.
G: Dickerson - Put him in the lineup and take Uthoff out if Fran wants to go small and bring pressure.
G: Oglesbly - The team has to stop staring and watching him on the offensive end when he is on the floor. Cannot be anything more than the third option in any set. That is not a knock, but if Jok/White/Woodbury are on the floor with him in any combination, they have to lead Iowa in scoring next year.
G: Ellingson - Freshman and unless he shows a ton, don't expect to see him a whole lot next year, possible redshirt.
F: Uhl - Same as above
F: Meyer - Probably another year away from seriously contributing, put him in with foul trouble happens.
C/F: Olaseni - Potential, but bball skill level is still way behind, he fell apart at the end of the season, most like me wish he would have been redshirted his freshman year, oh well, just be consistent and he may see time on the floor with Woodbury.

I have to admit I feel the same way. An addition of both Atwood and Lee would go a long way in addressing the talent issue this team has. A lot of factors played into Iowa's late season meltdown, but the most glaring problem Iowa had was our players just weren't good enough.

I think Jok will eventually be one of the better defenders for Iowa, hopefully next season.

He has all the requisite tools...length, quickness, effort....just needs the defensive iq to know where to be, when to gamble, etc. I agree he could be a very good defender.

Starter/Sub Undecided

Gessell/Dickerson
Jok/Ogelsby/Ellingson
White/Uthoff/Uhl
Lee/Atwood/Uhl
Woody/Olaseni

Mine would be:
Gesell
Oglesby
Uthoff
White
Olaseni

I simply cannot understand why Olaseni doesn't start. He beats Woodbury in almost every conceivable category.

http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/compare?p2=adam-woodbury&p1=abodunrin-gabriel-olaseni

I thought Olaseni played poorly the last 10 games of the season and Woody was clearly better. Now mid-year I think Olaseni was better. For some reason Gabes shot blocking was non existent in the last 10 games.

EDIT: Last 5 games
Woody 20Mins: 7 points/3 Rebs/ 0.8 blks/ Asst-TO Ratio 1
Gabe 19Mins: 4.6 points/4.4 Rebs/0.6 Blks/Asst-TO Ratio 0.67

Im not sure if Woody gets credit for his numerous tap out rebounds, I dont think he does.

Gabe clearly hit a brick wall the final month of the season. However, Woodbury seemed to gain confidence and showed a lot of promise for the future. As Reggie Miller pointed out, Olaseni needs to get in the weight room!

**DDThompson likes this**

I think that's a good assessment, st.

I might add some nuances but why bother right now.
And I'm hungry.

Here is a better question, if we don't get Atwood or Lee, will Fran think of moving Gabe or White to the 4? This would open the 3 up for Uthoff and Uhl

I think white moves to the 4 unless we get both of them. Gabe isn't a 4 he is a back up 5 at this point and will probably never over take woody. But he makes too many errors defensively and lacks too much offensively to play the 4.

If Gabe can consistently hit the 10-12 footer, I think he could play the 4 because of his athleticism. He beats entire teams down the court, i don't think that is an issue.

Agree with this. Gabe just isn't skilled enough offensively to play the 4. He'll be Woody's backup next year.

Get another athletic guard, I still needs the size/athletic combo guard, Jok is the only one. I don't see a frontcourt guy being a make or break for Iowa, but another athlete who can run and play d in the backcourt could be.

I want a lineup that prevents an Iowa/Syracuse style meltdown.....

Gesell/Dickerson
Oglesby
Jok/Uthoff
White
Woody

Depending on the development of our recruits/transfers......

Might be better without the drama of the seniors this season, for instance consistency among other things....

Lot of pressure on the seniors without a true leader.....

For some reason, forgot about Uthoff, he should start.....

Think Oglesby, Jok and Uthoff could be interchangeable.....

I think Meyer could come in and spell Woody and Greg on occasion. He is a large presence and could use his fouls when we face the Bully Boys of the Big....
