Being a Cubs fan...

Somebody asked me a few days ago how someone could be a Cubs fan. I took me a little bit but I now have an answer. It must be like being a cyclone fan. You love them and root for them even though you know deep down that they will never even win. But, if they beat the cards, we feel great and think we did something special. Alot of simularities there if you think about it. Only I am pretty sure that the Cubbies will win a World Series long before the clones ever win a national title or a "BCS" type of bowl game. Or get to that type of bowl game for that matter.

Not a comparison to ISU. Cubs have a large, passionate fanbase. ISU has a small, delusional fanbase.

Can't say I agree. I dislike the Cardinals the most in baseball, but I don't get any 'added benefit' if the Cubs beat them. Cardinals are a good team this year, but certainly nothing great. Yes, better than the Cubs, but is that saying much?

A win is a win no matter who the Cubs are playing. This year as well as the previous couple years. I'll take a win over Houston and be happy.

I have to disagree as well. The Cubs have much better resources than ISU with a much better fanbase. The two arent very compareable.

This is really a poor comparison. Seems like you are saying this, just for the sake of saying it. Yes, the cubs have a history of losing. And ISU (football) has a history of mediocrity, but cross-sport, cross level (college/pro) analogies don't really work.

As a cubs fan, I think the cubs are much better off than the cyclones. I mean the cubs are the second best team in their own city, and they have been for a while. And they STILL dominate the local fan population and media coverage. That right there says that they have a huge passionate fanbase and widespread popularity as a major market team. The cubs fanbase is truly one of the largest in pro sports (maybe). If you go to an ESPN cubs article or blog, there are thousands of opposing fans that log in to talk trash and joke about the cubs. The cubs have a huge fanbase, and despite never winning, anger lots of other fans nationally.

They have one of the most famous stadiums in sports, great uniforms, an awesome list of former players, represent a great city, great gimmicky stuff (ivy, W flags, wrigleyville). ISU has none of these things.

Actually being a Cub fan is alot like being a Hawkeye fan. Both have loyal passionate fans. But I know that neither will likely ever win the big prize(a NC or WS) But I keep following because I enjoy the journey.

I know alot of guys and ladies that are bandwagon fans that follow the current winning team. But lose interest when they start to lose and follow the new winner. I have respect for the loyal fan like a Cyclone. They have many more obstacles than we do to field competitive winning teams.

Some of my fellow Cub fans sicken me....next year is the year, what's this crap about knowing they will never win a WS?!

I'm an ISU fan and will never understand Cubs fans...and I was born in Chicago. For decades they didn't even try to be good yet have the resources to do so. They were just happy to be lovable losers and now are stuck with it.

I'm a Cyclone fan and a Royals fan. I think that's a better comparison actually.

The Cubs have every advantage you want in MLB. Huge payroll, fanbase, flush with cash, etc. The Cubs are like the equivalent of Ohio State if Ohio State sucked.

I think the Clonies are like any small market baseball team. Probably not competitive at a high level on a year in, year out basis but you hope they can put together a special season once in a while. Nothing wrong with that.

I think true Hawk & Cubs fans are some of the most loyal fans around. Call us delusional but a band wagon fan of either team would have jumped ship a long time ago.

A lot it two words.

Anyway, the Cubs will win a World Series before Iowa wins a NC- and it goes without saying that they will do it before ISU does.

+1000. I was just going to say pretty much this very thing. The Cubs have the resources to win. ISU can't say the same thing.

After the Cubs last were in the World Series in 1945, it wasn't until 1984 where they even made the playoffs again. FOUR DECADES. And since then, how many good teams have the Cubs really had? 1989, 1998, 2003, 2007, 2008.. That's really about it.

That's not a curse. That's just bad baseball. The inability to consistently put together better teams is all on the franchise's ownership and management, but hopefully those days are over now that Theo & Jed are running the show.

The Cubs are notorious for dishing out 10 year contracts right after a manager has a losing season.
