Baylor fires Art Briles

If you heard today on Dan Patrick an old in-the-know reporter (Galloway) out of the state of Texas that knows Briles very well he did not paint a pretty picture of Art. He basically said he is a sleaze ball when it comes to running a football program and that there was a lot of questions behind the scenes even back to the high school program he was running down there. Steroids, unethical recruitment of players, etc. back then.

Good point and it might be more than a year after I read what you wrote. But it still wouldn't surprise me if he lands somewhere in a couple of years. Why, because we'll hear from some enabling institution that Americans believe in second chances.

And if you can play or coach they'll find a place for you somewhere. Adrian Peterson whipped his son until he had bruises and welts all over his body, yet the Vikings took him back because he was a superstar running back. Dallas took in Greg Hardy despite the fact he beat up his girlfriend, because he was a great defensive lineman. Ray Rice hasn't found a job but only because his skills had diminished.

So, yeah, he disappears for a couple of years, shows some remorse and gets a coaching gig somewhere, maybe as an offensive coordinator or maybe even a head coach.

Thing is, we expect accountability in athletes, coaches, athletic departments and universities. Look to who GOVERNS many of those institutions. See much accountability in places like Springfield, IL or Albany, NY or Sacramento, CA or Washington, DC?

So why should athletic folks be held to a higher standard than elected officials?

It's sort of "the Israel Principle", i.e., don't retaliate AND don't DARE protect yourself against the attackers against whom you're already not allowed to retaliate...

It amazes me how the media holds varying accountability standards, as well...

Well, one thing I can't argue with is that if given the opportunity, I don't doubt that Baylor's fanbase would reelect Briles in a second regardless of how many coeds get raped or beaten down there. 'Cause championships.

And you know this how? Does Iowa's major donors always represent the Iowa fanbase?

I get it, you didn't follow the reactions of the Baylor students to his firing on social media. Google is yr friend bro. Everyone has to do their part to keep the players happy and winning.

Ok, so all the students reacted on facebook or twitter. OK. The problem isn't with the students. The problem likely isn't with the rank and file fan. So a few Iowa students wouldn't say dumb things? It's harder to get into Baylor than Iowa.

If the rumors are true, and they have signed Jim Grobe as interim coach, then they have pulled off a coup with the latest hire. Grobe was a miracle worker at Wake Forest, who can forget their conference championship or Orange Bowl appearance, and then more than one win over Florida State. This guy is one of the best coaches in the country.

Did you plan on making a point?

Another coverup of sexual assault at a major football program. I hope Baylor doesn't go the hero worship route of Briles like PSU did.

Perhaps the extremely weak response to PSU's situation encourages more coverups. Look for the NCAA to run and hide on this one too.
I don't see Baylor having a "Paternogasm" with Briles. While a successful coach Art was still light-years away from the aura and splendor that was JoePa. Either way the NCAA won't even give a slap on the wrist for this.

Did you plan on making a point?
I think you missed it. When I was an undergrad there was a sign at the football offices. It said "Read: Football players. Someone added in the word: to. Read to Football Players.

It was funny. However, I'm not going to spell it out to you. Did you play football?

You can't spell out something that wasn't there in the first place. You made multiple posts defending Baylor fans, and then irrelevantly brought up their academic superiority. I guess maybe your point was to put down Iowa.

I did not defend Baylor fans. Get over it. I said saying a few fans posting on fb doesn't make Baylor a bad place. The issue is with major donors and political corruptness. You wouldn't want Iowa to be judged by a few student fb posts. I'm sure there are some idiots.

Fact is that Baylor is harder to get into Iowa. I have no ties to Baylor. Nothing is serve by going off on a few stupid students that exist in both schools. I know students at both universities. None of them would condone what was done and I'm sure represent the majority.

The whole situation is deplorable. I do recall some iffy stuff done at Iowa in re to rape. Hopefully times are changing for good and the better. Imagine what a few dumb students would post if Fry didn't come to Iowa and our Hawks had as bad of program for decades as Baylor. Then a Fry does show up and this happens.

Concentrate on the betterment of the situation for victims rather than your pious MY HAWKS WOULDN"T DO THAT RANT. Yes, you have an implied rant.

LOL @ "a few fans". A majority of their fans (based on reading numerous message boards, and listening to call-in radio shows) are upset that Briles was fired. They think it was an overreaction. There is a small minority, based on my personal experience as mentioned previously, that realize how deplorable Baylor's actions were, and fully support Briles, the AD and Starr being removed/fired.

Iowa has never had a scandal anywhere near the magnitude of the Baylor scandal so it would be pure speculation on how our fans would react, but I would like to think that we would have more of a conscience.

Lastly, Baylor likely is harder to get into than Iowa, I will take you at your word as I simply don't care enough to look it up myself, but the academic standards of both universities are utterly irrelevant to this discussion and situation.

Just making a point. The fan base isn't stupid as far as students. You are wanting to make a story out of nothing. If Fry had been fired over something similar, promise quite a few would have objected. Why would Iowa have more of a conscience? Or less? Why obsess so much to keep looking at their message boards. The whole system needs to be change...and obviously it is...maybe too slowly. There are those who think some things were covered up in Iowa City. If you think Iowa is so clean, hang around downtown hotels and see what athletes are camping out there. Football and athletics get away with too much everywhere.

There are many good people at Baylor. I know them personally. There are good people at Iowa. Idiots are in plenty at both places. Football players around the big ten every year talk about Iowa fans and what they say, do and throw at them. I'm a Hawk fan through and through. It is not Mecca and at times can be embarrassing.

Get over the fans at Baylor.

Get over the fans at Baylor.

I feel like you read what I say, and then completely ignore it, and respond to what you made up in your head that I said. You seem to be the one obsessed with the fans at Baylor. All I said was I saw a lot of them defending Briles, and acting like the whole situation was being blown out of proportion. You're the one who simply can't accept that statement, and continue to beat a dead horse.

1. I never said their fanbase was stupid. Ever. It's not about making a story out of anything. It's a fact based on what I've read that many are defending Briles. That's it, it's not a story, it's an observation.

2. Of course some Iowa fans would have objected if Fry was fired. I never said anything to the contrary.

3. I guess if obsession is being curious to their reaction right after it all happened then yes I was obsessed. I just wanted to see what their initial reactions were given the magnitude of the revelations. In your opinion I shouldn't ever read another team's message boards?

4. I never said I thought Iowa was super clean. Like you said, football and athletic departments get away with a lot of stuff. I would like to think it happens less at Iowa since we are in the midwest and in Texas football is religion, but that's just my opinion/hope. Again, you are making something out of nothing.

5. I never said there weren't good people at Baylor. Your continued insistence on defending them for no apparent reason makes it hard to believe you're an Iowa fan. If you were you would just let it go since no one is giving you a reason to continue to defend them. Of course there are good people and idiots at both schools. Again, I've literally said nothing to the contrary.

6. If you have to state that you're a Hawk fan through and through it suggests that either you aren't, or you are but have given plenty of reason for people to be suspicious.

Please, do us a favor and move on to another thread. We get it, you think Baylor is awesome and Iowa is not. You've made that abundantly clear by what you've said and haven't said. I disagreed with some of what you said giving you a simple example of what I had witnessed.

If you feel compelled to respond again, I'd politely request that you actually respond to what I said, and not just make shit up.

Talk about butt hurt

I was surprised to see tweets from numerous players, as well as a statement from Briles' daughter, essentially saying, "How can you just turn your back on the person who built Baylor FB?" They still seem to believe that the on-field success matters in this conversation, that it somehow justifies creating an atmosphere that is conducive to violence against women.

I get that hundreds have players have gone through the program under his tutelage and probably been exemplary citizens, and I get that he cannot control the actions of everyone within his program around the clock. But the external investigation makes it pretty clear that he either...
  • at best, ignorantly ignored protocol when it came to reporting known claims of sexual violence on campus
  • at worst, actively tried to suppress allegations of sexual assault pertaining to his team
When you combine that with the willingness to accept individuals with a known history of violence against women, and then place them into an environment that seems to only foster that mindset, it does not really matter how many wins he amassed. He messed up big time, numerous people suffered gravely as a result, and he deserves to lose his job.
