Basketball Portal Question?

The portal just closed and so I am wondering if deals can still be made after the portal closes. In other words, is the portal opening and closing times just the time period that players have to be entered into the portal? Can Ben be out there still trying to pick up other players?

The reason I asked is because I just saw this article posted today and the time it was posted says "3 Hours Ago' next to the article author's name.

Well, I guess I just don't think of the SEC as a basketball conference. I like our chances against those school pursuing him.

With the portal closed I am wondering are the players allowed thirty days to finish negotiations after the portal closes.

I think Ben still has up to five more players he could add if he wants to. I read somewhere that the number of scholarship players has been raised to 15. I think we are at ten right now. How many of Fran's players that went into the portal have not signed with anyone yet?

Yesterday at 5:10 a.m. ran into UNI Coach Jacobson and coaches saying goodbye to a portal recruit at the Waterloo airport. After the coaches left we all had a 1.5 hour delay due to storms, so I had a chance to visit with the young man, and later his father. The player said most schools want to hear a final decision within a week of visiting. Super nice, mature young man.

Yeah I think the portal deadline is for guys to hop in it. There's no deadline to find a new school. So long as they enroll in school to be 'eligible' academically then they are good. If that is a thing anymore. I haven't heard of a kid having academic issues with being able to play in quite awhile.

Sometimes it seems player movement never stops. I agree, but don't know for sure, they enter the portal during the timeframe but continue to look even after the portal closes.

Plus you have seniors that don't have a landing spot yet, maybe they decommitted, they don't have a timeline. And, in this day and age, I'd guess there are lots of exceptions.

Regarding the Kentucky guard and the St Mary's one as well, why would a good PG transfer to Iowa knowing they won't be starting at PG next year? The St Mary's kids has two years left, the Kentucky kids three. But still are they going to come in and wait a year being a backup? Maybe they can play as a combo guard. But I just don't see it.

"I just don't think of the SEC as a basketball conference" Did you see the NCAA tourney this year?

When the portal window closes, it just means you can't enter until the next opening. You can declare that you're intending to go into the portal, but technically, can't enter the portal until the portal window opens again.

Once in the portal, you can exit at ANY time, but again, once you do, can't go back in until the next window.

Hopefully this helps.

So, basically, the benefit of the portal is to let possible designations know that you are looking for a new home.

Although some enter the portal with a 'do not contact' which evidently means you already know where you are going. Why enter the portal if that's the case? Still signaling your intent, I guess.

The 2025 Sweet 16 would beg to differ. I think the NIL era has really elevated the SEC in BB.
