Basketball Portal Question?

The portal just closed and so I am wondering if deals can still be made after the portal closes. In other words, is the portal opening and closing times just the time period that players have to be entered into the portal? Can Ben be out there still trying to pick up other players?

The reason I asked is because I just saw this article posted today and the time it was posted says "3 Hours Ago' next to the article author's name.

One would think we are in the race

Well, I guess I just don't think of the SEC as a basketball conference. I like our chances against those school pursuing him.

With the portal closed I am wondering are the players allowed thirty days to finish negotiations after the portal closes.

I think Ben still has up to five more players he could add if he wants to. I read somewhere that the number of scholarship players has been raised to 15. I think we are at ten right now. How many of Fran's players that went into the portal have not signed with anyone yet?

Yesterday at 5:10 a.m. ran into UNI Coach Jacobson and coaches saying goodbye to a portal recruit at the Waterloo airport. After the coaches left we all had a 1.5 hour delay due to storms, so I had a chance to visit with the young man, and later his father. The player said most schools want to hear a final decision within a week of visiting. Super nice, mature young man.

Yeah I think the portal deadline is for guys to hop in it. There's no deadline to find a new school. So long as they enroll in school to be 'eligible' academically then they are good. If that is a thing anymore. I haven't heard of a kid having academic issues with being able to play in quite awhile.

Sometimes it seems player movement never stops. I agree, but don't know for sure, they enter the portal during the timeframe but continue to look even after the portal closes.

Plus you have seniors that don't have a landing spot yet, maybe they decommitted, they don't have a timeline. And, in this day and age, I'd guess there are lots of exceptions.

Regarding the Kentucky guard and the St Mary's one as well, why would a good PG transfer to Iowa knowing they won't be starting at PG next year? The St Mary's kids has two years left, the Kentucky kids three. But still are they going to come in and wait a year being a backup? Maybe they can play as a combo guard. But I just don't see it.

"I just don't think of the SEC as a basketball conference" Did you see the NCAA tourney this year?

When the portal window closes, it just means you can't enter until the next opening. You can declare that you're intending to go into the portal, but technically, can't enter the portal until the portal window opens again.

Once in the portal, you can exit at ANY time, but again, once you do, can't go back in until the next window.

Hopefully this helps.

So, basically, the benefit of the portal is to let possible designations know that you are looking for a new home.

Although some enter the portal with a 'do not contact' which evidently means you already know where you are going. Why enter the portal if that's the case? Still signaling your intent, I guess.

Well, I guess I just don't think of the SEC as a basketball conference.
Other than having 14 teams overall in the tourney, 7 in the sweet 16, 4 in the elite 8, 2 in the final 4, and 1 national champion they may very well not be much of a basketball conference.

The NCAA tournament is still going to be dominated by the SEC and the B1G, they will have larger budgets then everyone, including schools that don't have football. I keep hearing that schools won't be able to keep up with the Big East and that's literally not thinking logically. Schools will still put priorities where they think is going to best serve them...but Men's BB is pretty much every schools 2nd major eye ball brand and is on national television every single night. Keeping your hoops up and relevant will become more important, especially to schools in the SEC and B1G. You will see separation not only in football (see last night's draft) but also in basketball.

The 2025 Sweet 16 would beg to differ. I think the NIL era has really elevated the SEC in BB.
Agreed. A lot of schools focused on football in the past. Also there are new teams to the SEC conference that weren't there in the past. I actually did not watch any of the tournament this year EXCEPT the two DRAKE games. I was cheering for them. After they got knocked out I lost interest since Iowa wasn't involved. If the schools with the all the money take over the sport I think I will not be the only one not following it.

If anything I will watch the NBA but my team kind of faded away after MJ retired and Salt Lake has always sucked. Me and my wife have been talking about maybe attending some of the new options here in Utah. We went and watched the new soccer team recently and and now we are talking about going to the minor league baseball team. I had to explain to her how the triple A minor leagues work and that usually that's the league that players sometimes get called up to play toward the end of the season.

We did enjoy watching a BYU women's softball game. We had our choice of that or the BYU's men's baseball team. It's weird because the two fields are connected. I told my wife if we are going to spend money following a local team I want it to be a good one. Many decades ago we attended a couple of Jazz games. She asked me how many Championship's has the Jazz won. (I knew the answer but let her google it). YEAH..........hell no!!! Not paying that kind of money to watch a perineal loser. I did enjoy getting to watch Carl Malone and Bobby Hansen when they played for the Jazz.

Since she is a nurse I suggested we could move to Iowa City where she could work and we could then get season tickets for football and basketball. Ummmmmm............ all four grandchildren live within 15 miles of us............ end of discussion. I keep hoping that Utah or BYU will join the Big Ten.

My special needs adult son and his special needs group were asked to sing the national anthem at the BYU women's game. My son was invited to throw out the opening pitch. He was really excited about that. As is the normal custom they let him keep the ball.

I'm like you, the only two NCAA games I watched were the Drake games

And, I would throw the Big 12 in there with the B1G and SEC in basketball. I believe they have it and will spend the money to be competitive at the top levels.

A lot of money also comes to each of the B!G schools from the BTN. I think it would behoove the BTN to open the cash register even more. The better the B!G get'$ will only line the pockets of the BTN on the return on investment that much more.

I haven't followed it closely but I think I heard a figure of around 75 million a year to each school and that was a few years ago. Let's crank that up to make buying players that much easier for the Universities in the B!G.

Also with success will come large crowds in Culver and that will just snowball things. CHA CHING!!!

If the Big 12, and SEC want to play ball let's show them that the B!G can play HARD BALL.
