Basketball expectations

Now that Iowa has landed Woodbury what is everyone's honest expectations for Iowa basketball in the next 3-5 years?

That 3 signifies doubt. You are a hater.

The question asked about expectations for 3-5 years. I was sticking with the low end of that range. I think we'll win at least 3 and as many as 5 national championships in 3 years.

I guess that does seem a little low now that I think about it.

Really going to boil down to whether or not we run into problems with too many one and dones I think.

I've mentioned that I used to work with a guy who coached D1 and ABA...his name is Al Kyber. Sharp guy.

When Fran was hired I asked him what he thought. He said Fran was as good an X and O guy as there is, and if he could land kids like he did at ND, we'd be back at Lute level. The second class is good. Now Fran needs to show he can sustain it -- Stu Jackson's Griffith-Hoskins class was pretty good...and then nothing happened.

Let's see next year's class. We're going to be terrible this year, but if we get a couple of top-100 kids to go with the Woody-Gesell class before Woody hits the floor in an Iowa uniform, I'll get *really* excited....

I don't agree. I don't think we are going to be terrible this year in fact I think we are going to surprise some folks.

Yeah I definitely don't agree either with us being terrible this year. I think 17-20 wins is definitely probable.

Think about this starting 5 next year :

Gessel
Marble
May
Basabe
Woodbury

Granted 2 true freshmen are in the starting
5 but it looks like the best starting 5 since Horner, Henderson, Haluska, Brunner and Hanson

Plus 6'11" sophomore Olaseni off the bench with 6'9" Kyle Meyer, junior Zach McCabe 6'7", Oglesby and Ingram. That's the deepest team since Alford's penultimate season, GO HAWKS!!!

Don't forget about Aaron White. I believe he's going to be great for the Hawks.

i m going with 18-20 wins before BTTplay, Olaseni and White will surprise alot of people, and 4 seniors will help in close games, i expect a down start to the 2012-13 season because of breaking in a new pt, but having Marble, May/White, Basabe and Olaseni/Woodbury around him he will blend in quite nicely

Have some of you looked at this years schedule? Its without a doubt the easiest schedule that we have had for as long as I can remember. I think its a brilliant move by Fran to schedule a week non-conference schedule. These kids need to learn how to win and build their confidence.

We should head in to conference play no worse than 10-2. We may even sniff a top 25 ranking.

We have two, maybe three, what I would call tough opponents - Clemson, ISU, and Creigthon. The Big10 is going to be difficult but we should still win 6-9 games within conference. 16 to 18 wins should be the floor with 20+ wins a distinct possibility.

Keep in mind we have a SR point guard, a SR shooting guard, a SR Center and plenty of returning experience. Not a single player left the team. When was the last time that has happened for us?

White is better than advertised, Olaseni will give us 5-10 good minutes, Cartwright is a stud, Gatens needs / wants to go out on a high note. Tons of motivation for this years team to prove something. Add in the fact that Fran flat out knows how to coach and we could have something special.

Regarding this season, it's hard to say how much better we really will be, but other than the first part of the Big Ten schedule, it's pretty favorable, especially our OOC games. I wouldn't be too surprised at 17-18 wins this year, which is a nice step forward.

Fran is adding more talent to the program (Gesell & Woodbury are huge gets) and by the time those two are on campus, I expect the current roster to have developed some by then as well. I think we could definitely be an NCAA team maybe by the 2012-13 season, or the year after that at the latest. Good things are definitely on the way. Just gotta hang in there for another year or two to really see it all come together IMO.

I agree with most of what you are saying but that bolded part is a huge stretch I think.

Not exactly a vote of confidence for the Hawks, DT.....:)

I agree with BigD, Dunder, and Hawkeye1-5 about the possibility of having a very good year for a lot of reasons, especially with Fran's coaching expertise and the confidence the team now will have with the new players, new recruits and the experience earned last season against all odds. After all we do have three players who made the all rookie team in the Big Ten.

We must not forget Aaron White who I believe will have a Basabe style freshman season.

Peter Jok will be a Hawkeye.....especially now. His situatipn is similar to that of Adam. The deck is stacked and the cards are in our favor, just the way Fran wants it and likes it.

Feeling as positive as this about Hawkeye basketball has been a long time coming.
