Basketball expectations

i will take that bet on whether we get Jok, in response to that comment " don't count on it, at all" Fran just showed he can and did keep Woodbury from Roy boy

Just having a defensive presence inside will make a huge difference, but next season we will have three guys 6-9 or taller. How long has it been since that happened? imagine this in about 3 years, Gesell at the 1, oglesby at the 2, basabe at the 3, meyer at the 4, and woody at the 5. Pretty salty! (I hope)

Some thoughts:

1. I was thrilled to see Woodbury commit last night.
2. I definitely think we can and will beat Creighton and Clemson. Hopefully Basable has added about 20 pounds of muscle this offseason so he can shut down McDermott.
3. I think ISU will beat us this year, but that could very well be our only loss of the non-conference schedule.
4. I have been enjoying reading the Woodbury thread over on CF. Some of them are down to earth and admit that Woodbury is a huge get. The ones that are in denial are quite humorous. They claim that they would rather have their unranked recruits (yes, I know, take rankings with a grain of salt) than Woodbury. Many of them also "just don't understand how he is a top 150 recruit". It's good to know that experts put together the real rankings, and not bitter Cyclone fans. I also appreciate the few naive posters who say "Fred didn't want Woodbury because he's slow, unathletic, and just doesn't fit our style of play". Too good.

If ISU were to land a recruit as highly ranked, and with the offer sheet of Woodbury, I would be the first person to say good job, guys, nice recruit. It's unfortunate some of them are so bitter they can't just admit Iowa landed a huge recruit. (Pun intended)

Frederick is probably gonna put Steeeeeele Jaaaaantz in at center for them this season.

While I certainly expect Iowa to be playing in the tournament in the next three years, next year is going to be brutal. I don't know where you guys are getting the idea we will be competitive. Of course, I remember having this exact conversation last fall.

Iowa still doesn't have anyone outside of Cartwright who can create their own shot, they are still very slow on perimeter defense and very small on interior defense, they sill still have depth issues, particularly at the 1 and 5...again.

I think next year's team will win games they shouldn't, but they will also lose games they should win. They just don't have the talent to compete day in and day out in the Big 10, not by a long shot.

Dont count on it...at all

Because we have no chance at actually landing him? Or because you're worried about his injury history? Not that it's glaring, but hasn't he dealt with a couple different injuries that have held him back some? Plus with the way he's grown his knees have been really bothering him, from what I'm told. Loads of talent, though.

Next year NIT, year after that dancining, year after that Big Ten champ and deep NCAA tournament run. This of course as long that there is no early leavers.

Yeah, that's rich. Talk about sour grapes..

The fact that Thad Matta and Roy Williams both offered Woody a scholarship tells me all I need to know. Conversation over.

Wow, just wow. All this talk of 20 wins and NIT bids, etc.. Aren't you the same people ripping ISU for talking about making the tourney this year?

No way does Woodbury contribute in B1G play. He will be man handled by every post player. He is even skinnier than most forwards. Iowa has NO point guard.

Looks like this is going to be another let down season with these 20 win predictions. I say 14 wins, including a first round upset in B1G tourney.

With the style Iowa now plays, I would expect Iowa bb to again be exciting to watch.

It appears that Fran is upgrading the talent to fit his style of play. Iowa will be very large across the front line, which is good for rebounding and running, which will be exciting.

I expect Iowa will be again be in the top five in the conference within 3 years and will be returning to the big show, which in itself will be exciting. Once in the tournament, anything can happen from first round losses to getting into final fours. You just have to get to the tournament first before anything can happen.

If Fran can recruit a couple more players in the next couple of classes to really fill out the positions, I expect that Iowa will be tough, very tough, especially at home. Carver will once again be packed and an exciting place to watch Iowa bb.

I don't know how good Woodbury is going to be but you can't teach 7'1". Not many teams have centers like that and if Woody has the skills that many think he does, and if he is surrounded with solid talented players, by the time he is a senior (if he is still at Iowa), Iowa could have a terrific inside game. Just letting Basabe play the power forward position or even the three position gives Iowa a very powerful inside game.

Now get the outside shooters and penetrators and Iowa will be a tough team to beat.

I know everyone is excited about basketball right now, rightfully so. But control your expectations for this season as it might be a struggle. I am hopeful that Iowa can get to 16-18 wins this year and get into one of the post season tournaments. Expecting 20+ wins and NCAA bids this year is a huge stretch. If Iowa can win 9 or 10 out of conference games and get 7 or 8 Big Ten wins that would be a huge step in the right direction.

Keep the expectations low and perhaps they might surprise us.

Not to dog on Al Lorenzen aka The Vanilla Gorilla, but he came to Iowa ranked #4 Parade All American. He also was awarded MVP of several blue chip basketball camps. IMO, Lorenzen did not come close to playing up to what was expected. I hope Woodbury doesn't end up going the same route.

My expectations, since fran was hired regardless of his recruits, was to bring Iowa BB back to relevance. I don't care how many stars a player has whatever he get to bring BB back then I am happy.

With this said he has landed a lot of solid recruits. I don't think his last class was shabby, but we will see soon enough. I don't think it's unrealistic for 15-18 wins this year, NIT next year and back to the dance after that. He was able to take three different schools to the dance and do well. I have no doubt he can do that at Iowa.

Hopefully someday he wins a NC. I am not putting that expectation on him that's just a fan wanting to see his team achieve greatness.

Don't forget that last years team came a long way from start to finish. Are we forgetting the fantastic win these kids got at the end last year. Taking down a #5 team! The key this year is how healthy Cartwright stays. That is my biggest concern for a successful year. This team has good talent now and a great coach.

It appears that okeefe4prez is as clueless as KOK himself. Who is a potential one and done for Iowa? This board has less legitimate commentay with each passing day and is being taken over by attention seeking morons who act like 5 year old children with their 'look at me' moronic posts. May be time to pay Kakert the money in order to avoid this drivel.

Some folks are openly questioning whether Pete Jok's knee's will hold up enough to allow him to play at the top level. I will reserve judgement on that not knowing what his problems are,but will hold out hope that he recovers, and Iowa gets him. He seemed to be built similar to Luol Deng and those Sudanese players are so thin early on,and tend to grow so tall that their joints need some times to catch up..just my theory.

As far as expectations....I have the Hawkeyes going 9-3 in non-conference,with losses at ISU,UNI and vs Clemson/Creighton. In conference I have them going 7-11 or 8-10 leaving them with an overall mark of roughly 17-13 or 16-14. That would be nice progress for the Hawks.

Next year, I am concerned about losing our senior backcourt,so I have us dropping down to 15-15.
Then, year after,we make our big push to go dancing...maybe 21-9 or so.

I hope to make the Dance by 2014...reasonable expectations, imo.

I do not see a huge drop off in 2012-13 with Gesell at the Point. Jeff Horner led Iowa to a NIT bid and Dean Oliver led Iowa to the NCAA tournament their freshman years. I expect May to be a leader as a Senior along with Marble, McCabe, and Basabe to provide veteran leadership as Juniors. Mix in the talented incoming Freshman and it should be a fun year to watch.

Al was not the same player in college that he was in high school. I am pretty sure that had to do with back pain in college. That can happen to anyone, just like any one of these kids can turn out to be over/under rated.

To the point you are making, I think that Fran has recruited enough quality size that even if one doesn't turn out to be what we are hoping, there is some probability that another one steps up and exceed expectations.
