Basabe Likely to Start vs Penn State

anytime sapp shoots outside of the elbow it might as well be a turnover. hes a below average shooter and worse yet his teammates arent expecting that shot so we dont get the board. he is no better a defender on the ball than mike, and he is far worse off the ball. plus he gambles way too much and picks up stupid fouls.

i think sapp will have a respectable career but i dont see his being a starter making us better right now.

He's shooting 33% from behind the arc. Not great, barely good. But not a TO waiting to happen.

Why is so one infatuated with White at the 3?
He played it last season, he played it this season.

He can play the 3 or 4 depending on the opponent's wing.

Not that hard to figure out. It's not black/white.

Fran hinted that Basabe might start but that also other changes might be made as well.
So ripping on BasketballMan isn't warranted, esp since he is just giving his opinion.

Great question Storm and great point(s). The argument (discussion) is getting very, very old.

I dont care where Aaron White plays, but he has to start getting things toward the basket that isnt him trying to dribble penetrate from the perimeter. Hes very crafty inside, needs to get a little stronger, but hes excellent in there as far as getting position offensively. Hes also got to get on the offensive glass and get some put backs to get himself involved in games early. Hes to good of a player to disappear like he does for long stretches.

While that's true, moving him to the 3 isn't a long term solution. He can do it against some Big Ten 3's, but not most of them.

Of course he plays the 3 sometimes. But when I talk about a player I talk about their primary position. Earlier in the yr white's primary position was the 3. It didn't work very well with him as a primary 3 in our offense. He now is back to being a primary 4 like he was last yr. Yes he plays the 3 some...he also plays the 5 some. But his primary position is the 4 and I don't see that changing. I don't know a single player outside of maybe woody that typically only plays 1 position on this team. And if white plays 25 min in a game I would bet that maybe 5 of thos mins are at the 3 and the other 20 are at the 4...not accounting for the few min possibly at the 5.

So he is a 4 not a 3. Of course certain time he can play the 3 because of match ups but he is still primarily a 4.

To make my point matt gatens played the 4 spot some under lick but is there anyone who would call him a 4?

Might help Woody with the pressure of starting off his back. He would be able to observe how the game is being played and called. Just might help with the usual two quick fouls. It is certainly worth a try. I imagine Woody would be cool about the move being a team player.....

I tend to agree. I wonder sometimes if Woody is trying too hard.

White played the 3 a hell of a lot more than Gatens played the 4.

Who really cares about positions. It is really match up based. White is terrible agaisnt certain perimeter based players on the defensive end. So you don't want White guarding perimeter based players who have their main strenght being putting the ball on the floor.

You are completely correct. And he typically matches up best with other teams 4s. So I look at him as a 4.

Also the offense seems less dynamic with him at the 3 because he isn't a good ballhandler. But if he develops a low post game (as in back to the basket post moves) he could be one of the most dominant 4s in the b1g.

If MB starts against Penn St. he will go absolutely crazy.......to the tune of 21p-11rb-5blk and 4 monster dunks.........book it.

It's nice to see that we have posters who have stepped down from their former NBA GM roles or D1 coaching positions to take the time to enlightening us with their infinite wisdom.

For some reason I'm thinking the guy walking the sidelines, running practices, doing the recruiting, etc etc just might have a bit more basketball intelligence than you and me combined. Let's see what 5 he starts on Thursday.

And yet... Just a few posts above this one, you didn't hesitate to give us YOUR basketball opinions. Are you a former NBA GM or D1 coach?

probably, but JO shouldnt be playing at all. may should be getting most of his minutes.

How about throwing Ingram some minutes and see if he can get anything going. He isn't a three point shooter, but if he can penetrate and finish it is something that neither JO/EM has shown they can do with any consistency.
