I know a lot of people want Lick gone. I have mixed feelings. How many of you trust Barta to hire a good replacement if Lick is let go. I don't.

I'm all for getting rid of both of them and bringing Dan Gable in to do both of their jobs. He couldn't do any worse than they are.

If Nebraska can have Tom Osborne as their AD, why not Dan Gable as ours..

For the record, I'm not convinced that Barta will make a great hire if Lickliter is ever shown the door, but I'm willing to give him another chance instead of staying with a coach that isn't getting it done.

Barta will get two bites at this apple...if it comes to that.
I think he might learn from this hire.
Honestly, I do not think he himself really understood the true issues of the Iowa bb program in the context of a BCS conference when he hired lick.
I think he was mainly reacting to a specific coaching situation at Iowa where he heard all the vocal criticism of SA and determined that Iowa bb fans were less concerned about winning and more concerned about a comfortable ''fit'' with ''Iowa values''..and he felt a rush of support at his ultimatum resulting in SA departure, which fed that notion even more that Iowa fans wanted the anti-SA as a coach more than anything.
So, when his run at Stallings fell short, he settled for the safe choice...lick.

I hope he learns from this experience that in the end, while we want solid representatives of the U. of Iowa on and off the court, it does not mean a hill of beans if you don't win. If KF had not won more than he lost in season 4...as great as he was, he would have been under fire(altho football coaches get an extra year due to the enormity of turning football around)..

I sure hope that if Barta has to hire another bb coach that he figures out that he needs a coach of integrity who can sell ice to eskimos. Who can sell coals to Newcastle...who embraces the absolutely critical salesman/pitchman aspect of the job of Iowa bb coach.

I hope you're right, JHH. I really do--because I do have serious concerns about how Barta handled the first go-round. However, I hope we'll have the greatest turnaround in college basketball next season and postpone the day when we'll have to find out.

He retired from wrestling to spend more time with his grandkids. My guess is if he were going to do something that would take 60 hours a week 52 weeks a year away from his family time it would invlove Iowa Wrestling.

I don't know... Would wouldn't he?

let's see..

-time demands
-constantly having to deal with money alums and fund-raising
-dealing with lots of sports he doesn't have a real interest in
-lack of experience in this role
-why tarnish his legacy
-he's not a "suit" type
-limits his ability to promote and stay involved in wrestling around the globe

Gable is an absolute legend, in many ways. And I'm sure he's worn many hats as the face of college wrestling. But that doesn't necessarily translate to being a good AD.

Did Barta hire the present FB and BB coaches in Wyoming? IF so, we might really think about NOT letting him select another coach at Iowa!!!

Barta in my opinion is incapable of making a good hire. I posted some background information on Lick and it took me 10 minutes to figure out some stuff. How could he research a short list, that every AD has and come up with Lick???? I really think he hired him because he won COY. He is clueless....and spineless...which are both prerequisites for being an administrator. He needs to attack a top assistant at a top blue blood program. A guy who can connect with students...and recruit, recruit, recruit...

But he looks so goog in the black blazer with the striped tie and a nice smile. Oops, forgot we didn't hire him for a clothing add.

You probably didn't realize that a basketball committee was formed to select the candidates and it included BJ Armstrong. It's not your fault you didn't know that and blamed Barta.

and what is the current state of Nebby basketball?

As they say...a camel is simply a horse designed by a committee.
Committees are set up to CYA if you end up with a hire that starts off with the three worst losing seasons in the programs history.
Not Barta's fault...blame the committee....convenient.

Every BCS basketball hire the AD comes out and says we have formed a committee and hired an agency to assist in our search for our new coach. Most folks know that is window dressing...they AD in contact with the President is making the hire...FACT.

So did the committee hire Lick or did Barta hire Lick?

I bolded the most important part of your statement and if Barta didn't like the names the committee gave him he could have moved on from those names, but it's not your fault you don't know Barta didn't have to follow the advice of a committee when making a major hire and putting his neck on the line.

Do you really think they selected the candidates???? Not a chance....they merely were given information from the AD to look over. Every AD in the country has a short list of potential hires and all coaching positions...ready to use at the drop of a hat. Barta put his neck on the line regardless of who hired him...the buck stops at his desk.

No I don't think the committe selected the candidates, I think Barta gave this committee a list of names and to see if any had any interest in the job to keep the search from being "public" knowledge of who was contacted because as soon as Barta would contact someone it would be all over the place whereas if they are contacted through a 3rd party (the committee) no one knows who this 3rd party is representing.

My main point was the same as yours, Barta is the one that hired Lick and not this committee. And this committee had nothing to do with the hiring of Lick like Hooper thinks it does.
