I truly wonder if others have stopped to think that maybe it's just not that easy as hiring a new coach ?
What if the obstacles and challenges of running a basketball program at Iowa in the state of Iowa are a little more difficult than people acknowledge.
Consider this...
- Small recruiting base of legit in-state talent split by 2 major and 2 other D-1 schools
- Trend is for very best in-state talent to sign out-of-state (Barnes, Collison, Hinrich, etc.)
- Facilities are the poorest in the Big Ten
- Not a large number of major financial donors in comparison to other major programs/states
- Wisconsin ,,,, and now Minnesota to a smaller degree are running successful programs as border rivals
- Students are not engaged at CHA and not getting the lower bow seats
- Football in Iowa and around the nation is wildly popular
- Academia portion of the U of Iowa is not exactly a proponent of athletics
- Small racial minority in state making the recruitment of non caucasian players and coaches more difficult
- Great competition for a smaller base of recruits across the country
Although I'm not sold on Lick I'm not sure hiring somebody new is necessarily the panacea that others think it could be ,,, with or without Barta making the decision.
