Balance of This Team !!

I really like the scoring balance of this team. They will be hard to defend. In looking at most of the box scores from their European trip, it looked like there were 6-7 players every game scoring in double digits. All between 15-20, but the key is the number of players. One game Jok leads scoring, another White, Marble, Uthoff. This scoring balance only makes everyone better. With the depth, teams won't key in on a couple players to shut down, see Matt Gatens. Also, with the depth, Iowa can afford to play more aggressively & can get away with a few extra fouls. I'm just pumped!

Uthoff coming in now really helps the balance. It just creates mismatches because they are athletic. This team is going to be fun to watch & they seem to be gelling with a lot of comradery.

There are several things that have got me excited. One, it will be interesting to see how good Jok really is. We know what he could do in PTL and had good numbers in Europe but it will be tougher to do it against Big 10 opponents. Second, and this actually makes me even more excited than the first, and that is to see how high Olaseni's capabilities really are. He has become a more consistent player, and the things he brings to the table are very important to this team. If he scores and defends like he did in Europe and PTL, he could get Iowa a few extra wins by himself. Then finally, as you described the balance of this team is going to be unlike anything I can remember in my lifetime (in 1986 I was two so that is why I say that).

Gabe might seriously be the most fun player to watch this year. Our 8th best player this year will be better than the 2nd best player on any of Lick's teams.

How sweet it is.....

I would advise you against reading anything into PTL or European games as harbingers to next season.

We get it, again.

Here's my question for you smarty-pants. Name once when a player experienced the type of success Jok experienced in PTL and exhibition play when it didn't translate to the season.

I understand the reasoning, but I don't think the actual data supports it.

Last year in the lone exhibition game, Josh Oglesby scored 15 points on 50% shooting. Obviously that carried over into the season.

Meh, I got nothin'

I think we have seen enough scoring from Jok to make an educated guess that he will be a pretty good scorer this year. Of course its possible he won't be but my money would be on him being a big contributor scoring wise.

PTL stats don't mean a whole lot and if you look at those stats and make judgement based solely on that then disappointment will follow.

When I saw highlights, I just look at how comfortable that player is, does he seem under control. How does his athleticism compare to those around him? Does he have that burst? There are many other things to look at as well, this is just a couple things.

After watching him, I firmly believe he will be a very good player at Iowa, his shot form is near perfect and he looks to be in total control and very smooth. Can he do it in college, time will tell. From what I see on film, he appears to have everything to be a quality player and one of the better ones Iowa has gotten in a long time.

On target, once again, Sportstalent....

Perhaps you're correct, but couldn't I also add that in addition to making judgments based on stats, making judgments based on highlights can lead to equal disappointment?

Yes, unless you can be honest with yourself and keep in mind the actual setting. HS highlight videos are worthless to me. Honestly, the number one thing I look for is what does the player do when he has space? Jok does a little bit of everything, he shoots the three ball, hits mid-range shots and goes toward the basket...oh yeah, he has good court vision as well.

Sounds fair. However, how are PTL highlight videos more legitimate that HS videos? Aren't PTL games just "Arena Basketball"?

There isn't a whole lot of difference except for one big thing, there is no bias. The highlights are longer and aren't edited for the player benefit. Every now and then you see actual mistakes not just a guy making everything and dominating their opponent.

Because it's against opponents that either played college ball or did play college ball. Big difference, their ho-hum defense is better than most Iowa high school defense, and bigger and quicker, but still don't read too much into it, but better than HS tape.
