B1G stadiums ranked

Illinois should be bottom two. I like NW’s stadium given its unique location right next to the lake.

No its been completly updated. The box is teriffic. Its pretty nice actually gor a stadium . The only negative is that it could work for a nasa test wind tunnel on some days.

They just cant fill the place for obvious reasons.

Their band is pretty good and not as arrogant as OSU or UM.

I think Illinois stadium has stayed the closest to its original architectural design after all the expansions and renovations that every stadium has gone through. The classical style columns on the outside are kept in the same place even after building above them. So many of these stadiums have been expanded too much and their stands have weird angles and proportions. Just look at the way the seats in the corners of some of these places look when the stands come together at different angles. Kyle Field in College Station is probably the worst at this, but its in the SEC. Penn State is really bad looking when it isn't full, and Nebraska isn't far behind.

If you talked to an architect or designer about some of these stadiums they would say a lot of the same things about each stadium. The updates just add shine new parts to the same old stadiums, the additions of extra boxes and big scoreboards don't make the stadiums better by any standards other than making money or impressing donors.

Ah, ok, didn't know it had been updated. I haven't been there in 15 years. I just know when I was there last it just smelled like sadness.

It was bad and sad much of the time. It would be a real nice big 12 stadium. It seats a lot fewer now.

Purdue for fb or bb just dont stack up.

Honest question and not trying to be a snarky jerk - how can a band be arrogant? I’ve just never heard that phrase used before.

How many times do we see this thread?

How many times do we see it where Kinnick is ranked #1????

Plus this board is typically dead on weekends and based on the activity it has given us something to ponder in Hawkeye land.

It's about time for another Eno thread isn't it???????

Guess it depends on whether you're ranking the stadium or the atmosphere.

-Penn State's stadium is ugly as hell, but the night game vibe is something special.

-Northwestern belongs near the bottom if not at the bottom. Pathetic. (it's not "right by the lake"...it's about a mile away.)

-Illinois did a nice job with their rehab, but the stands are still too far from the field. (tOSU fixed that when they redid the Shoe. Lower the field, add rows.). All they need now are fans...well, that and a team. Ok...and a coach.

-The "wind off the lake" is a problem in Wisconsin? Never heard that one before. Regardless, Camp Randall is slipping in the rankings. Drunken antics only take you so far.

-Minnesota has a nice new building, but it ends there.

-Purdue's facilities reeealy need a make over. Starting with a wrecking ball.

-Rutgers shouldn't be in the B1G. Period.

Exactly, which is why it should tell you that “Big Ten CFB Hype” is just a clickbait account putting out uninformed junk to drive ad traffic. Did you not see “Feeder account” in the twitter account description?

No articles, no analysis, no website, no employees. Just some random guy in his mom’s basement pulling a bunch of equally random lists out of his ass.

And he got you hook, line, and sinker.

Our local has had Big bands stay at local homes and play at a hs game Friday nights when bands travel. How fans and football programs are is reflected in performance and attitude in the bands. Its a fun experience but shows attitudes.

We are all human though. Sat by the sister of sn OSU linebacker who went down with a neck injury. The obnoxious arrogance became real life really quickly. Felt really bad for her. I think he didnt play anymore that season. He was carted off.

Your assessments are pretty good. Dont know how any of Purdue s facilities can be fixed.

Iowa has fans too close and too far away.

Got to see Iowa put in the endzone seats from Childrens. Havent seen it from inside since though.

Madison, from late October on, is just cold. They even had snow squalls up there last year the same day Iowa and Maryland were fighting the wind at Kinnick. They don't need additional assistance from a wind off Lake Mendota or anywhere else.

Indian summer in Madison is a fleeting thing.

That original ranking list is messed up. The Indiana stadium is the worst I've been to and should be ranked dead last...a concrete monstrosity with Row 1 seats located 5-10 yds above the field. Purdue's stadium should be ranked much, much higher...built about the same time as Kinnick it looks, feels, and sounds like Kinnick when full...I used to go to games there and watch when Brees was their QB and that place was loud and rockin'...back then it was literally crumbling and in need of repairs but I think they've done those. I actually like the NW stadium and would rank it much higher -- where else can you go see a BTen game in a h.s. stadium? As for Madison, last season I ran into a young UW student who was at Kinnick, and he was literally awe-struck and nearly speechless at how close the seats were to the field and the sightlines: "this is a GREAT stadium".

But in the end, the ranking should consider foremost how tough is it to play in. Multiple players from Michigan and Ohio St. will testify -- indeed, HAVE testified, that Kinnick is the toughest BTen place to play. That has to count for something.

The losses may have been weirder. Hawaii, Colorado, Indiana, then an absolutely uninspired performance against NC State in the Peach Bowl.

Turnovers, penalties and injuries were the typical trio that doomed that season. That, and being the preseason #1 in Sport Magazine.

Indiana, Hawaii and Colorado are historically poor teams but Hawaii finished 9-3 and Colorado was coming into its special time. Indiana had 8 wins that year. So they looked like cupcakes but they were tough teams...if the hawks only knew what they were running into with those teams.

It was a tough schedule.

Lol Minnesota and Michigan state ahead of penn state? How is Minnesota ahead of anyone besides Illinois and Rutgers?
I saw this tweet and agree with it:

Best Stadium and Best Gameday Atmosphere are two entirely different things, just like Best College Town and Best Tailgating would be. Best Stadium is a combo of the actual stadium and game atmosphere, and Kinnick really can't be beat when you look at both of those things. It's a beautiful, architecturally coherent structure, with an amazing game experience, a tough place to play, fans close to the field, etc.

I've been to Penn State for a game, and the game experience there is one of the absolute best, like LSU at night. But the stadium is a disaster: huge but ugly, a GIANT end zone stand dominates the whole thing, and it does look like an erector set made by someone with no sense of design. No way is it the Best Stadium even in its division of the BIG 10, not to mention the whole thing. Their fans are super nice and gracious, and the tailgating is fun, but Happy Valley is an unattractive structure, and that has to count for something.

I think Illinois stadium has stayed the closest to its original architectural design after all the expansions and renovations that every stadium has gone through.

From the outside, the Illinois stadium is absolutely remarkable. The inside is "meh." I've heard they moved their test fields, but it used to be that if you didn't have a $10k Loyalty Circle parking pass (or other substantial donation) there was a really good chance you were tailgating adjacent to a corn field. Those "Orange Krush" d-bags trying to call Iowa "hillbilly" was laughable. Champaign makes Iowa City look like freaking Rome or Paris by comparison.

Irregardless, as to the rest of that list, Nebraska should be very low, as should Rutgers and Indiana. I would even put Michigan fairly low. Nebraska's stadium has been overbuilt with premium seating and it has pushed an ungodly number of seats into the endzones and corners. When you are in the upper deck there, you have to walk down like a quarter mile of stairs to take a leak or get concessions.

Michigan's stadium is big, but a lot of its capacity is the result of them designing it for 17 year olds wearing shorts, not middle aged people in full winter gear. The experience there just isn't great.
