B1G Media Day Notebook: Oliver Martin Appeal in Works, Alcohol at Kinnick

The easiest thing the BIG can do would be to pair the 4 western-most teams (Nebraska, Minny, Iowa & Wisco) with the 3 eastern-most teams (PSU, Rutgers, Maryland). The teams from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan & Ohio are the other division.

All natural rivalries remain intact. Iowa's division would feature 2 "blue-bloods" in PSU and Nebraska, and 2 teams that have shown they can compete for conference titles (Wisco & Iowa). The other division would have 2 "blue bloods" in Ohio State & Michigan and 2 teams that have shown they can compete for conference titles in Mich St and Northwestern.
That's actually a really good idea that keeps all the programs together that need to be kept together. The thing I dislike about it is that Iowa's football schedule would essentially be 4 teams that Iowa didn't historically play, but from a competition standpoint, it ain't a bad strategy.

Drinking beer in Kinnick will not be cheap. Someone told me $1 an ounce but I can’t believe that.

In the mid 80's to mid 90's my dad was general mgr of a beer distributorship in Des Moines. He told me any distributor had to give the kegs to the AAA baseball park vendors basically for free and all the distributor got was to put up signage of their products all over the stadium. So dont tell me the vendors, owners, and ballpark people dont really really jack up the price of beer and pop etc.

Yes, that is called in kind advertising. The distributor could have sold beer, made money and then paid that money to the ball park for the signage, but it was probably a better deal for them to just give them beer.

That is not how it is run at the U of I. There is a contract with a food service vendor and there is probably a revenue sharing aspect to it. There will be plenty of pork to skim. I suggest everyone continues to get drunk at tailgates and then just limit yourself to 3 or 4 beers during the game.

Biggest problem will be they can't even control the damned concession lines now, I can't fathom how bad they will get when they sell beer and have to check IDs. I like beer, but I don't think it is a good idea to have general beer sales inside the stadium. The logistics just don't work out. The concourse is too small.

We went out to eat on vacation in Maine a few weeks ago and the restaurant charged $3.50 for a pop. It did not list the price on the menu. I was not pleased.

Yeah, and that pop you bought had about 5-10 cents work of syrup mixed in with some carbonated water so figure that markup, maybe 200%. That is why I sneak in a diet pepsi into Kinnick and drink out of the water fountain as I hate to pay $2 for 12 ounces of bottled water just as a matter of principle.

By the way, I dont think we need beer sales in the general part of Kinnick. I quit drinking alcohol at games a long, long time ago because you could miss 10 minutes of the game, not just clock time, waiting in line to go to the bathroom.

I don't think Toren going was a knock on AJ at all. They are both solid and highly respected.

I'd guess that part of the issue is that there is no way that Kirk is going to only bring one senior, so, either Toren or AJ had to be the odd man out.

Also, I get the feeling that Kirk is trying to shield AJ as much as possible from all of the media attention. He's quickly become a national-level player, and, doesn't strike me as someone who looks forward to being in the limelight.

I went to the Iowa @ Minnesota game last year.

Beer sales inside gopher-land were everywhere.

And it wasn't really a big deal, although, Minney had/has kiosks all over the place specifically to sell beer so the lines at the food outlets weren't overburdened.

They promoted Grain Belt as the main prole beer but had other beers. And honestly I think I paid $8 for 16 oz. They cut it off at the end of the 3rd quarter. Everything was well planned out, no biggie, no big problems with people or perceptions. I've also drank beer at the five bowl games I've attended (3x Outback, 1x Cap-1 and 1x Insight)....again, no issues, well run, not a big deal.

To this day I don't understand why Iowa has been so reluctant to control the alcohol inside Kinnick which as we all know is pervasive anyway. (Sally Mason anyone?)

It'll be interesting to see which beer gets "promoted" inside Kinnick...then the suits and counter-suits from the ones not selected.
