Any chance AJ didn't go because hes already told Kirk he will be back the following year?
Drinking beer in Kinnick will not be cheap. Someone told me $1 an ounce but I can’t believe that.
I'm not sure why he would close the door on leaving at this time. There's no need.
I agree with that. But if you know, you know. It would be really surprising for anyone to know for sure that early, but it's one of the few reasons that makes much sense that he wasn't in chicago.
I honestly don't think there's any conspiracy. I think a lot of coaches bring guys that they feel have been good soldiers for the longest time. Ryan Day didn't bring Chase Young.
It was a major development when KF brought Jewell as junior, the first one he had ever brought. Now, Jewell, Stanley and Toren Young are the only juniors he's brought.
It could just be that AJ isn't a leader like those guys, which is perfectly okay. Some guys lead by example instead. If he brought 3 seniors this year I wouldn't have thought much of it. But since he brought a different junior instead of AJ it raises some questions as to why. I've heard a lot of good things about Young as person, but I've heard the same things about AJ. Young must be a heck of a lot better as a person in Kirk's eyes to pick him since he's not even really a starter and the other guy was 1st team Big 10. Unless there's more to the story. The "more to the story" could be as simple as AJ didn't even want to go, or Kirk flopped a coin. But there has to be some deciding factor when you pick one junior over your clear cut best junior.

Young has been on the Hawks leadership group every year since he was a RS Freshman. This is a group voted on by the team, and it is usually dominated by upper-classmen. The 2019 council has 18 seniors and 1 junior (Young is the lone junior).
Here is an article about Young's leadership, with an exerpt copied-and-pasted below (https://hawkeyesports.com/news/2019/7/19/football-young-leadership.aspx):
Perhaps more importantly, Young is a leader. A leader by example. He was one of two redshirt freshmen named to Iowa's Leadership Group in 2017. Last season he was the lone sophomore on the Leadership Group. As the Hawkeyes enter the 2019 season, Young is the only junior on the Leadership Group. As a side note, Epenesa was on the leadership group as a Freshman in 2017 but has not been voted to the last 2 leadership groups.

It sounds like AJ just isn’t really a fan of all the attention. If he brought 3 seniors this year I wouldn't have thought much of it. Honestly I would love this. I’m really tired of hearing about how easy the B1G west is. For one it’s not true, plus I’d like to play teams like Michigan and OSU more frequently.
Could be. Maybe AJ said no thanks to going. It sounds like AJ just isn’t really a fan of all the attention.
That's interesting he "stopped" getting voted on. That's different than never being voted on in the first place. I did know all of that about Toren tho.
They were banned in, I want to say '88. Had one at every game in '87. Had to find more clever delivery methods after that.I remember those when I was a kid at Kinnick and watching Iowa fans around drink out them. Then, by the time I was old enough to drink, they just sort of vanished. I guess they were just a phase.
Wrap your brain around this. I was at a game in Kinnick where there was a keg...yes, a keg...in the student section. I shit you not. This was before my time as a student but I remember it well.
Before the days of uber security it was amazing what you could get away with. I grew up a short hop from IC. We'd drive up in the Summer and just walk right into Kinnick and down onto the field. We'd play catch and kick field goals for a half hour or so, only once did we get thrown out.
I can believe it pre-Hayden. Once Hayden got to IC, attendance went way up, and the budget was there to hire more Per-Mar, or whoever the security company was.
I say play 10 conference games and get rid of the divisions. Top two teams play in the championship game. As a fan I would much rather pay to see a conference game rather than a non-conference against a MAC team. The divisions really screwed up some of the old rivalries that used to be fun to watch.
My other suggestion, which won't happen, is to get rid of Rutgers and Maryland and leave it as that or get two different teams such as Pitt and Notre Dame for example. If the BIG 10 wants to get more publicity and take over some of the spotlight the SEC has, they need to add some more prominent football teams. It has been discussed in nausea in the past but the BIG 10 still needs to try and get Notre Dame. It is a logical regional addition and the historical games played within the conference make it an easy fit. There has got to be a way to make the money work to get them added.
If the BIG 10 wants to put itself out there as the best conference they need to get have more conference games and eliminate the talk of the so called lesser games and weaker schedules by not giving the teams the chance to schedule them. With something set-up like that it would strengthen the conference when they are compared with the likes of Alabama that plays Troy and another FCS team every year. If the league champ is then compared side by side with Alabama or another team it would help to even out the bias that is associated with the SEC and hopefully give teh BIG 10 and advantage on the national stage
