Assistants?

Waiting on Siena's decision on Buonaguro. After that some things should fall into place. I bet FM is also doing due diligence on potential ex-Hawks. It would be bad form to suggest that at the presser and then not exhaust all possibilities. Not saying he has to pick a Hawk, but there should be evidence that he tried.

he also said that there are some stipulations on the time line since we're a state school. does anyone know what those are?

I think this is your answer. Biggest thing right now is who Siena hires as their coach. Then Fran will know who is with him, or staying. Then the rest of the chips fall into place.

I know it takes time but it does stink for FM. I mean he is trying to get all the current players to stay, settle into a new place with a family, meet all the people that work in the athletic office, target possible players and begin recruiting to fill a spot next year, rerecruit all the current commits and do all this without the help of assistants.

Has it been posted anywhere or been asked," How much money does he have to work with in hiring his assistants"? We all know the assistants are going to be huge factor in our success, and having the money to hire top assistants is critical. I know Rhoads made ISU give him more money to work with.

Excellent point AHawk1. If I was Fran, I would work really hard to get Forbes to come to Iowa as assoc. head coach. Imo, this would cover the Iowa factor and recruiting base, and give him the ins around the midwest and deep south that would ensure that he will be successful at Iowa. Once the program has been reestablished at a high level, if Forbes gets a HC job elsewhere, Fran will be an established recruiter in these areas also. I would double Forbes salary from what it is at Tennessee. Getting him onboard would be that important to me, If I was Fran. Fran has connections in the east and really doesn't need Mitch nearly as much as he needs Forbes, imo.

Forbes will not leave Tennessee unless it is to be a head coach....

Boilers is saying that Kirk Speraw might be under consideration as an assistant coach hire at Iowa...interesting.

You just beat me to it. That would be interesting. Speraw was let go this year so he maybe looking at a place to land. Plenty of coaching experience, former Iowa player. The only question I have is what he could bring for midwest connections since he has been at UCF for so long. He would certainly bring some JC connections if we were looking to add somebody this year. Boilers stated this is only a rumor but if Fran can make this happen it would be a huge get.

Any chance Speraw would bring Marcus Jordan with him? He was on the all Conference USA freshman team last year...plus, as a huge 1990's Bulls fan, it would be pretty sweet to run into MJ at Carver...

There are state posting requirements and the process has to go through the diversity office.

What happened with Lick was that the decisions were made, but not formalized for about 30 days. I think the new coaches could come in and get busy, but not be officially on staff.

Speraw has to be considered a front-runner if he is interested. His JUCO connections would help immediately. Also, he would be desirable because he would be a candidate to move on to another HC position eventually. Continuity and change are both good in a coaching staff.

This i one of the few things we've agreed on loess.
I agree with the two of you as well. Even if it is a coach in waiting gig, if Fran does good i see him being around for 10 or 15 years, i dont know how old Forbes is but he is close to 50 i believe that would mean he would be ready to retire as well.

Since we are only paying FM $1.1 mil/yr I assume there is plenty left over for whatever we need to pay to get great assistants. 1.1 is a pretty small number compared with some projections I saw for getting Pearl or another high dollar name. I say get the best we can, regardless of cost! It will quickly pay for itself.

Yeah, that's really too much to do on only $1.1 million + / year.
