Are we 'free-balling it' again Sunday?

We played well with Pete the last two games, but we are a WAY better team with him Playing. Just like we played well without Cook for a stretch we are better with him playing.

Hopefully Pete and the guys can see tho that they are fine without Pete having to do all the scoring. Stop running so many set for him and let him get his shot in the flow of the offense. Should help in that he won't have to spend so much energy on offense trying to get his shot up. Hopefully he uses that energy on the defensive end. That is how we become a better team I think.

I'd love to see a healthy Jok with this group avg closer to 15 a game. Let the other guys carry some water too. They are showing they are plenty capable and it only would make team more dangerous down the stretch.

Totally agree. Offense goes stagnant when everyone is setting screens while Pete cuts back and forth exhausting himself to get a shot. He's gotta work within the framework of the offense to get his shots.

I would agree only that any team needs to run the 1/2 court. Iowa uses the 1/2 court far less with out Jok. Fran never has been able to really coach that. Teams eventually force the Hawks back to the 1/2. Until he gets a true pt guard....... or JB begins to act like one and be a threat to go to the hope and score.

It's not on Jok. It's the coach. It's the lack of penetration as a threat from the pt.

I'm not against Jok, but I am against the offensive sets that they tend to run when Jok is in the game. Their whole offense seems to revolve around setting baseline screens for him and getting him the ball for an open look. They did the same with Uthoff last year and its annoying. It basically takes everyone else out of the game.

Fran has never shown the ability to coach 1/2 court.

Disagree on this. When you run lots of sets, the PG becomes a lot more important. I think that is what we need to get away from and do more of what we have been doing since Jok has been out, and that is just get into the motion offense. Once we are in the motion, the PG is just part of the flow, and it gets Jordan chances to catch and shoot. It is also why we had 5 assist from Baer and Ellingson, 4 fromJordan, 3 from Moss vs Rutgers and why we had assists on 24 of 30 baskets. Against OSU Uhl had 6 assists, Pemsl 5, Ellington and Baer 3 apiece. We had 21 assists on 32 baskets.

That is what we need is just get into the motion offense and not so many sets for Pete. At least that is my opinion on it. :)

Right. Hopefully Fran, and Jok I suppose, don't push it. Like Melrose said, the key is to keep the ball moving in order to get good shots. There's no reason to play me ball. These last few games have shown that they have other players who are more than capable of scoring. I hope Jok realized that while watching. They don't need Jok to take bad shots even though he makes some of them. Bad shots are always available. Good shots aren't. If the shot clock is running out then sure... get the ball in Jok or Bohannon's hands and let them chuck it. Otherwise, keep it moving. Play inside out. Attack the defense from all 5 positions. They have that ability because all of them can score. It's just a matter of getting good looks.

Yep, exactly what I wanted to state. This is exactly how Wisconsin plays and wins. They are a pure "system" team. they will use the entire shot clock passing the ball around until they get a mismatch to exploit then they hit.

People are enamored with how we've played the last two games and well should be. But the defenses OSU and Rutgers played was awful and our success in part had a lot to do with that.

Their bad D had a lot to do with the Hawks playing good D and offense. Our passing was excellent in this game. Also, OSU vs Wisky was the only other game where they got beat this badly. Rutgers & OSU have kept games pretty close all year.

If he plays he should just be added to rotation like the other scoring guard and see what he does. We can play our best ball to date if we use what we have learned in the past couple games. The open guy, the hot guy shoots the rock. Don't run plays for one of 5 guys all the time.

Offense is not Iowa's liability, it's Iowa defense that needs to improve. I agree. Iowa has enough players to get the offense/points they need. Multiple players can contribute.

Where I REspectfully disagree is that MSU and Wisky will slow it down in the coming years. Those other assists can come in a pt guard 1/2 court as well. Of course it would help if JB would be a threat to go to the rim as is about everyone else but him.

Illinois used the motion to go a long way into the final 4 with motion. They had 3 guards who played NBA, 2 of which were relevant players and the 3rd was just undersized. They also had a forward that stuck in the NBA for awhile and a Big who had a long Euro career. 1 of those 3 guards was a combo 1/2 guard who was very good in the NBA.

Iowa has some of the players to make a run but what you want will require extensive upgrade.

That said, when they all move it is fun to watch. The motion requires a complete team including guards who can finish. A traditional half court with tenacious D is usually the offense of teams not complete or master coaches with talented players will dismantle you.

As Illinois got deeper into Weber's tenure, you saw what happened. There may be other motion examples in the Big, but that one was the most noticeable.

I see what you did there. Well played, sir.

I guess it'll be interesting either way.

With Jok, our recent chemistry might take a hit. It's human nature for a team to step up and play with more urgency when your best player is out.

Without Jok, I'd just hate to see one of our guys take a knee to the groin.

We shall see.

Early on, I think Jok did what he thought he had to do to lead this young team to victories. Now that he sees from the bench that they can win some on their own, I'm hoping he has, or the coaches give him, the perspective to see that he needs to trust them more now that they're learning.
