Anthony Nelson Going to the NFL

I totally get the argument and the process. What I'm saying is that since Fant declared its been a never ending debate about it being a "no brainer" to leave early for the money if the projection is that of 1st-3rd round selection. 35% of last years early entrants went undrafted. I totally get the process, but I'm also guessing that those that went undrafted also had "credible feedback". While I'm sure that they are exposed to a lot of information, and that the information is very credible, I'm simply not sure that it's as much as a no brainer as it's being made out to be.

Getting a 1st - 3rd round grade is a good bet to make it. I would say only about 10 kids a year are "no brainers" to leave early. In my mind none of our players are no brainers.

It would be nice to know what Hockenson plans to do. I assume he will be declaring but why not have announced it already? Isn’t the deadline Monday?

There are other reasons why a player might declare early. They don't like college. The only reason they enrolled is for this opportunity. They are not on schedule towards their degree and are not eligible to play their SR year (Fred Russell). These guys go to school with regular students. Regular students that get loans and manage to get their degrees. They all know they can come back and finish their degrees later or finish them on line, on schedule, while they chase their dreams. I'm not sure how or why their reasons got pigeon holed into either/or. Why is it a huge mistake to leave early? I don't understand this line of reasoning. Under some circumstances, I could see it being a mistake but those circumstances are unlikely.
Because if you go early and don't make it, you can't go back to college and play, get free living, training and meals for a year. If your goal is to play in the NFL and you don't make it, life just got a lot harder.

Boo hoo? Welcome to the life of every other college student on the planet. I don't know what else to say. Not everyone that dreams of being an NFL player is good enough to play in the NFL. Whether they play 3 years, 4 years or 10 years of College football.

He's gone. He didn't return to Iowa after the Bowl game. He stayed in Florida to train with other players preparing for the draft.

Namath went down with his first knee injury while doing a rollout pass. He took like 3 or 4 steps and just crumpled. No one within 5 yards of him.

Any ding dong can see that a kid does not go from 6'2 to 6'0.
But you are right, only way to tell for sure is to see it for yourself.
I didn't offer any real numbers, so whatev.
Your argument was potential and that you could tell by a year or two of tape. I simply said I seriously doubt that and pointed out why I doubt that.
Spotting things like talent and potential are not as easy as you make it sound. You don't just look at a little tape and a bio (which varies from site to site) and go yup I think I will offer him/her a scholarship or contract for millions.
Then again without looking, I have to wonder if you have been on the side of what's wrong with a school
Sending out 300 offers. Am I right? I'm not even going to look, I will take you at your word on the answer to that.

It is their choice absolutely. I wish them well. I have no argument with that. If I did I would just be an asshole and I'm not.

A kid at what age? I have four brothers. When I started high school I was a bout 5'9" and 120 pounds; at the end of my junior year I was 6'7" and 155 pounds (still not heavy but 10" taller). One of my brothers was 5'11" when he started 7th grade; he's 5'11.5" today. Another one of my brothers (who was in the Hawkeye Marching Band) was 6'0" when he graduated high school; at the end of his freshman year in college he was 6'4". Growth spurts happen at many different times, even within the same family.

Lol you're on a tangent bro. First most of our early departures did play in the bowl game and played spectacularly. Second and I hope this is not confusing. A person could easily have faith in their ability, but lack faith in the things that they can not control. I.E. being able to play a Senior season and remain injury free.

I don't know if you have ever been around this level of football, but 80% of the young men you see out there are playing through some varying severity of injury.
I'm not on a tangent. I say I hope they all do well in whatever they decide.
I'm simply saying some of the arguments are about as dumb as they come and pointed out why.
Faith has nothing to do with what a person can control but rather what they can't.

Talking from recruiting sites to start of college to going pro if they do. The numbers very. Some a fair amount. I think Iowa is pretty straight up.
But I am talking about shrinking from a recruiting time through college years. Or getting slower.
Weight can very and is understandable as it should. I can even see getting a slight bit taller after your Sr year in HS.

You just said, as a GM or scout you have seen enough after a year or two of starting in college.
So you say they should take the advice of people who "know", then say boo hoo if they do and slide from middle second round to bottom third or don't get drafted at all? Just tough luck?
So you agree with what I was saying that they should take all the talk with a grain of salt or not?
I'm not sure what you are arguing?
Do they listen to someone who watched one or two years of film and "knows" or don't they? If they do and get screwed it's boo hoo?
Just trying to figure out what you are saying.

I started high school in the 10th grade (9th grade was in middle school where I lived). @ 5'6 and 102 lbs. I graduated @ 6'0 and 185 lbs. I have 1 uncle that graduated high school @ 6'0 and grew to 6'4 within the next year. I have a cousin that went from 6'6 to 6'9 in college (FR to SO season).

Correct. If you leave early, don't make it and your biggest problem in life is that you have to pay for 1 year of college like a normal person? Yeah....boo hoo. There are people with real problems, bro. After all....it is ADVICE. The decision to follow or reject that advice is on the person.

Who has been given a grade of rounds 1 through 3 and then went undrafted? That seems like it could only happen if the player assaulted some girl on camera during the offseason. The panel that does those reviews are rarely that wrong.

Alot of the guys that go undrafted are the ones that think all they have to do is impress 1 team and they take a leap. None of our early entries will ever go undrafted. That's just nonsense.

I can't think of any. I had earlier stated that Fred Russell didn't come back for his SR season, but I was mistaken. He did not red shirt as a FR. He returned a few kicks or punts that season. No yards from offense.

Not sure why you're crying, but they live a pretty good college life with a scholarship, but they have to work for it. They are far removed from having to eat ramen noodles daily and worry about how to put a few dollars of gas in the car like I was. Greatly reducing your standard of living is not a small thing...

And somehow you survived. How? Don't tell me......you had to get a job????? Say it ain't so, Sparky. Oh the humanity!

The classic example is David Robinson. He was 6'6" as a HS senior and hardly recruited. While in the Navy (thus his nickname "The Admiral") he grew 7".

Meanwhile, Auburn's Derrick Brown, one of the top DT prospects in the nation and a fixture in 1st round mocks, is returning for his SR year.

Really!!! I sure hope he has a deferred payment on a $5-10 million insurance policy.

Some young guys love their teamates, colllege ball and their coaches, love the campus, etc.

A Nelson has put in 4 years at Iowa and that is a career in reality
