Answer to all you Mark Weisman critics!

He was dominant today! This was one of the best running performances I've seen in a long time. He was running over and around everyone on the field. He broke a couple of long ones too. He opened up the game for passing too on the play action passes. He should have also had a touchdown rather than a fumble on that play on the goal line if it had been reviewed. The ball did break the goal line before the fumble. Iowa scored anyways, but still he is going for a record and I hate to see one taken away from him. Let's keep it going Mark Wesiman 4 more wins let's do this!

He a good fullback, that has no business playing tailback in Big10.

I like Mark. But today was all about the OL pushing the LOS three to five yards downfield on the majority of plays. Albert Young, Shonn Greene, Ladell Betts, Fred Russell, Jermelle Lewis, Adam Robinson, Brandon Wehger, etc, top 200 with that type of push.

Mark is what he is...a useful part of the offense, but Iowa has no complete running back this year

I agree with this. The first 2 drives to start the game end in Touchdowns easily and in less plays with any of the backs listed above.

Mark is a great Hawk but boy do we leave yards and points on that field with him at the TB position.

Just watching the Wisconsin game really answers the question of what's wrong with our run game. Our oline isn't great but I've seen more good runs by Gordon in 1 half then I've seen in the last 3 years from iowa. He turns nothing into 40 yards. We turn nothing into 1 yard.

I liked MW's statline until I started watching Wisconsin and Nebraska. Gordon has 16 carries for 238 yards and a td with 3 min left in the first half. Good lord how are we going to handle him?

How awesome would it be if we just used him in short yardage situatuons?

Weisman's legend will grow in the years to come. He's another in a long line of wonderful walk-on stories. He and our speed backs (take your pick: parker/canzeri/wadley) need to be in the back field at the same time with Weisman more often. I mean you've got a guy who play FB/RB, why not use that to your advantage to keep the defense off balance? GDGD apparently doesn't like too many options for a nice gain at the same time.

This is one of the mysteries of the universe Mysteron?? I see all kinds of teams have two running backs in the backfield at the same time.

Iowa just cant seem to make stuff like this work.

The combination of Weisman and the jet sweep works well. Teams have to commit 8 or 9 guys to try to stop him on the inside so the outside is usually wide open for the jet sweep.

that's not true. Teams, especially good teams, do not need to commit 8 to 9 guys to stop Weisman. Not with iowa's 2014 OLine

MW is a great Hawkeye and deserves respect for what he is, a great leader and hard runner who blocks well and holds on to the ball. He had a nice game and I am happy for him, he deserved it.

I don't think any Hawkeye fan is critical of MW himself, but more so the coaches for leaning on him to be something he's just not.

Very well said and exactly how I feel.

i am marks biggest critic. I think he is unfit for a top tier program as a tailback. It's not his fault it's Kirks lack of recruiting. I see Melvin Gordon who we'd all love go over 350 yards with one quarter left. Mark can't, won't, and never could do that. He's not athletic enough to cut and shift and bust a big run. It hinders our offense yet Kirk keeps seniding him out in hopes of something different. i am sure he is a great guy but just because your a great guy doesnt mean you deserve to play. Play the players....

I appreciate what Mark Weisman has done at Iowa especially since opponents know what's coming. He's probably gotten more yards when opponents knew what was happening but he's also left yards on the field that faster backs would have picked up. I don't recall anybody putting down Mark Weisman though.

Most of the people responding to this thread are negative to Mark. He was thrust into the TB role a few years ago because of injuries and has been productive since. Who else would we have started the last few weeks? Canzeri has been hurt, Wadley has ball control issues and no one wants to see Bullock as a featured TB.

I've never been critical of Weisman. He is what he is and does his job well for the most part when he's in. The problem is he is a one demential runner and I think he'd be the first to tell you that. He's a ground and pounder who wears down defenses over time.

Where I have a problem is how he is used. He's not a 20-25 a game carry guy and he's not the type of runner who should be running outside. The staff could be smarter on using him. Especially with Canzeri and Parker/Wadley who are totally different types of runner.

I like Weisman just not how he's used.

On a side note, with the same blocking Melvin Gordon would run for 350...just to give you some perspective.

This is a bad Illinois team. Weisman had a decent game but let's not get carried away. Weisman would never start at running back for any other team in the Big 10. He is a "nice" runner but ineffective against stout run defenses.
