Ames High more exciting than HAWKS

Don't let spank hear that!

Don't let me hear that? How about 'don't let anyone who understands sports' hear that? Wow.

I can't even comment on these types of threads. As I've posted in other threads like this before. To think a high school team could even compete with a D-1 college basketball team is ridiculous. I'll just leave it at that.

Hi.

I am the guy who started this post. My point was - and I have to concede that it was Waukegean (sp) that did most of the lobbing - that I enjoyed watching Ames play MORE than I have enjoyed watching any Iowa basketball game this year. That is when I can find a game on TV that I can actually watch.

I am a fan of Iowa basketball, and I am a fan of basketball in general.

And it bothers me when I can get a little thrill from watching an Ames High team and no thrill from my very own Hawkeyes. That is not a knock on Iowa per se, but a commentary on the state of the program. I am not the only one who feels this way out there.

And I in no way suggest Ames High would beat Iowa. That is silly. But the fact I have more fun watching Ames High is not - which concerns me.

Your original thoughts have merit, it's when other people drag in the discussion of Iowa losing to high school team is where things turn.

I will say it again. Who are these guys that post on this board now? Junior high kids? If you think Iowa would lose to Ames High, you are the dumbest sports fan in Iowa. You have no clue what it takes to be a bb player in college. The level of athletics is so much higher. Go back to reading you facebook, and stay off this board.

Maybe so, but neither does much of our BB team.

While it is kind of silly to say Ames would give Iowa a game, it is absolute fact that Barnes, right now, is better than any player on Iowa's roster.

Barnes could be the best player on a several teams... doesn't mean that a high school could even compete with a college team. Because they couldn't.

Payne vs weber = sizable advantage to Payne - probably biggest in favor of Iowa

Tucker vs Stubbe (whatever his name is) - advantage Tucker although not as sizable as one might think. Tucker is not a great defender and has been ice cold as a shooter this year.

Gatens vs Barnes = Sizable advantage to Barnes. Nothing against Gatens, but Barnes may be an NBA all star in 5 years.

Cole vs Kohler - Sizable advantage Cole. Kohler is as tall which would help keep Cole honest, but other than that - Cole.

Cougill vs McDermott - Wash. I think this is a complete wash. McDermott gives up a little size, but is a little more active.

Based on the matchup, Iowa wins probably, but it would be closer than say Jon Miller would like to think. You switch Payne and Weber and Ames wins that game. I'm not sure why people think this is so far fetched. I believe there are HS teams out there with more talent than Iowa, especially considering most of Iowa's starting 5 are 1 or 2 years out of HS themselves.

I was defending Iowa, saying they are not more exciting. The Waukegan team was the one doing the lobs, etc, so I don't know what his argument was by saying that Ames High was more exciting to watch than Iowa.

And for you people thinking Ames would beat Iowa, it was funny for a day or two just to think about but now it's just getting stupid. There is so much difference between the two levels of play it's not even funny. Ames has 2 college basketball players on their team, nobody else will play above d3 if that.

After Barnes and McDermott, the guys on their team are no better than Lickliter and Neari and guys like that, and I know how everyone likes to rag on them, so give it a rest.

Understood TarHawk. Thanks for clarifying. :)

This Ames could beat Iowa talk. Well no. It's fun to take jabs at Iowa & play around with it a bit but seriously would not happen. My wife & I were joking around about it but know Iowa would win. A college team would have a lock down defender on HB to neutralize him which would tighten-up the rest of his Ames teammates. They wouldn't have to double-team HB so much & could play more straight-up. The other Ames teammates would have difficulty creating space & finding passing lanes & openings. They wouldn't be athletic enough to create on a dribble & create. Now can Ames play to within 30 of Iowa wiht the system they run, who knows. That would still be impressive for a HS team. What's the over/under for points?

Now on a serious note, unfortunately as stated above, my wife & I were more entertained watching that game than Iowa games. Seemed to be more athleticism. I was very impressed with the Ames team & how they played together. One could identify with an offense they were running & game plan. They spread the D out & let HB pass out of it. The other teammates also would get open 3 looks & would pass out it. They created space & would even allow them to dribble-penetrate & pass down low. Impressive. McDermott has great hands & touch down low & a good nose for the ball. He will be a perfect fit at UNI. It seriously kind of had a look of a college game, that is, if you did not know you were watching a HS game. Could have been the quality of the broadcasting. You want to know who I thought they really resembled, I thought they had a look of a UNI kind of game-plan. Drake's team from a couple yrs ago ran a similar style of O with that Adam Emmenecker at the point. Spread out & he would drive & dish.

A 24th ranked HS team cannot compete with any D1 college team. Stupid to think that they could.

Which is more enjoyable to watch is a completely different story. I had fun watching two good HS teams compete playing fast tempo. I fall asleep watching the LICK system. The good thing about falling asleep is you don't realize they lost until the next morning.

The Ames beats Iowa opinions might actually be the dumbest I have seen on a message board, if they are really believed, in my 11 years on them....or unless you are 10...because I believed that stuff when I was 10

I agree with Jon Miller here. I am absolutely dumbfounded at anyone that thinks Ames would stay within 30-40 points of the Hawkeyes right now. I'm trying to be respectful here, but I don't think dumb is a strong enough adjective for statements suggesting Ames would beat Iowa right now.

And this is coming from a guy who is very skeptical and worried about the current regime.

Speaking of dumb posts on here the one about Lick being in the running for Big Ten COY has to be right up there. Also welcome to Turniptruck it's nice to see someone give the so-called experts and know-it-alls the sarcasm they deserve.

A former National Coach of the Year has a better chance of winning a conference award than a high school team beating a college team... and it's not even a comparison.

Wrongly predicting a season and having higher expectations for a team than what actually happened isn't the same as saying high schoolers can beat collegian athletes at a sport.

I'll admit when I am wrong. I have been wrong in the past, I'll be wrong in the future. But the comparison of this thread isn't even relevant, as they aren't even on the same level... if you really think they are, well, then I don't know to tell you.

I never said Ames would beat Iowa. Someone else said it was a dumb post and I just mentioned that it wasn't any dumber than the one about Lick being COY.

I'm not saying you think Iowa would lose that game, I'm just saying while my thoughts on Lick being COY might have been way off, a HS school team competing with a NCAA team is far more unlikely, IMO.
