Since Lute left, Alford is the only Iowa coach to win anything! I'm not an Alford fan, but at least he got the Hawks to three BTT championship games & won two of them.
columbus - don't take this following post personally - someone else in this thread made mention of the great alfred's BTT championships.......
since Lute left - no other coach has won anything?? I'll jump in here because I loath the lack of credit given by iowa fan to Coach Tom Davis.
i guess i'll be the anti-clown fan here and say that the only tournament that really matters and that people remember is the NCAA tournament.
How many of those pesky games did SA win? coached here 8 years, made the tournament 3 times and won a grand total of 1 game. that year they were 7-9 in big ten regular season - very likely the only reason he got into that year's ncaa tournament was due to winning the BTT. The three years he did make the NCAA tournament his teams got stopped by teams seeded #2, #7, and #14....
In his 8 years at iowa, he had 3 20+ win seasons. 3 of those 8 years finishing .500 or above in the conference.
Let's compare that to a coach who never won anything while at Iowa:
Tom Davis had 13 seasons at iowa and had 10 of those years with 20+ wins and 1 with 19. of those 13 seasons he finished 11 times at .500 or above in conference play.
Of those 13 seasons, Davis made the NCAA tournament 9 times. Never lost in the 1st round. Never. Including making it to the sweet 16 his final season.
5 of those ncaa tournaments ended with iowa losing to #1 seeds......the lowest seed to beat a TD team was #5.
finally, i would contend that Big Ten basketball, and I believe basketball in general, was stronger in the Davis era compared to the Alfred era. No argument the Big Ten was stronger.
Could go on and on......but yeah, no coach has won anything since Lute save for Alfred.
