Alford Issues Apology Regarding Pierce

I am sure the AD or president didn't make him do this either, he probably came up with the idea all by himself. Good luck Bruins fans, you are going to need it.

I know Stevie bit off more than he could chew with this job but he started gagging less than a week into the job. He is going to redefine the word disaster before his UCLA tenure is over.

Too little too late Alf. Plus, if his new AD had not been holding a gun to his head, he never would have said it.

Perhaps he discovered there is no Christian athletes' organization on the UCLA campus to help him deal with the victims of actions of his players.

It sure isn't worded like something he would write himself either. Where was that statement 14 some odd yrs ago. If that isn't UcLa trying to just put a glass of water on a forest fire I dunno what is. He's so disingenuous it's not even funny. It'll pacify the Bruin faithful I suppose but will it pacify their beat writers?

The Orange County Register appears to have been looking into Alford's past and particularly his handling of the Pierce saga. That and local TV. The local comments have not been kind. No doubt Guerrero was feeling some heat to address it and forced Alford to issue the apology, such as it is (barely one), 10 years after the fact.

I'm sure the Wonder Boy thought he would get a honeymoon upon taking the job. It doesn't appear that will be the case. He will have his hands full. Good luck with the hire, UCLA.

It's never too late to apologize for something we have done or said. However, it is the motive behind the repentance that matters most. If Alford came to his AD and felt like he needed to do this because it has been weighing on his conscience and he needed to do it, then its never too late. If he did it because he felt like it was good PR and he was taking heat for it and this is an attempt to get the heat off his back? He'll have to deal with that.

Being that I don't know what it is, I sure as heck am not in a position to judge it, as I've apologized for things I've done and said years later after being convicted of the need to do so.

I don't think so. There are still a number of BruinsNation posters that are not happy with either SA or DG.

GO HAWKS!!!

I agree with this to the extent that if Alford wanted to seek out the female victim and personally apologize to her in a genuine manner, any time would be great for that. However, I think he is way, way too late to issue a public apology.

Interestingly, if he'd had some version of this statement memorized for the introductory presser, it would have really reduced and/ or eliminated the ongoing heat.

Maybe it is genuine contrition, maybe it is forced, either way, it indicates that walking into the new job, he still felt he had done nothing wrong in 2001. Maybe he now has individually realized how awful his actions really were.

I think it is a thinly veiled attempt to keep his job. But as you said, Jon, I have absolutely no way of knowing unequivocally.

I understand the skepticism and not saying I am buying it either. That said, I know there have been times in my life where I have had to apologize for something, and really, really was repentant, and if the other person to whom I needed forgiveness from hadn't taken me at my word, life would have been tough. They had every reason to believe I was just apologizing to make a situation much better, or take away the stress, etc. But they chose to forgive me and move on....at that point, it was up to me to prove how earnest I was.

You can always know sincerity by the fruit a person bears after they ask for forgiveness.

Let he who is without sin (or need to apology for something in the past) cast the first stone.

If they see just how disingenuous he's been in the past it probably won't leave them happy either. The ones with blinders on that don't pay as much attention are the fans I was refering to. We all know there are alot of those too that will support the program much like anywhere else. Their attendance early on next yr will be interesting. I think their writers will be having a field day with it and I doubt this paragraph long apology will stop that

I was looking for the footnote to his apology:

fn1 - This apology is being issued consistent with all of the requirements placed on me by the administration.

Interestingly, though, most people forget the next thing that happened after Jesus said this.....which was to tell the woman, "Go, and sin no more".

it is interesting how people use quotes without the full context to serve themselves in some way, shape, or form.

Does he apologize if he's still with New Mexico??

So it takes him being scrutinized by the media to apologize? Did he just realize he was wrong??

I'm sure this issue has been weighing on Alford for quite some time. I don't know how the man has been able to sleep for all these years, but if I had to guess, it was on a very expensive mattress and sheets with a thread count beyond the budget of most mid-major coaches.
