IOWA CITY, IOWA - - University of Iowa football player A.J. Derby has asked for a release from his football scholarship and will transfer from the University of Iowa.* The announcement came Monday from Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz.
*
“A.J. has asked for his release, which has been granted,â€￾ said Ferentz.* “We are sorry to see A.J. leave the program.* He has been a positive member of our team and a pleasure to coach over the past two years.* We wish him the best as he moves forward with his career.â€￾
*
A.J. Derby added the following:* “I would like to thank the University of Iowa and football coaches for the opportunity.** Unfortunately, I don’t feel this is the best fit for me personally to reach my goals as a student-athlete.* I especially wish my brother (Zach) the best of luck in the coming year.* I will miss all of my teammates, family and friends who have supported me here.* Good luck to everybody.* Once a hawk, always a hawk.â€￾
*
Derby played in nine games as a redshirt freshman in 2011, completing three of six passes for 30 yards and recording one solo tackle on special teams.

When is Ferentz going to have to own up and give an explanation for all that is going on? This program is heading in the wrong direction very quickly and I have had about enough of these "no comment" responses. When you are the head coach of a public university receiving tons of money from donors and fans, how is he not questioned more about all these big name players leaving? And why are they all leaving?

NEVER. Now repeat after me: The Emperor's new clothes are beautiful and luxurious.

get a grip. If the issue is what many of us on here suspect it is, there really isn't anything that Kirk needs to say about this. If he wants to play quarterback, Iowa isn't the place for him.

I've heard twice now that he's headed to ISU to run the spread. once and maybe its a rumor but twice? it must be true

wanted to play QB...and it ain't gonna happen...so he cries...and takes his ball and goes home...typical of his generation...it's all about "me" ..and a "team 1st" mentality simply does not exist...and the sad part is, this comes from a kid of a former Hawkeye, and his daddy let him do it..........sad...sad...sad....

p.s. apparently he doesn't understand the whole concept of "once a hawk, always a hawk"...

If he goes to a major school he will lose a year of eligbility. He has already used his redshirt.

Well I don't see losing a special teams player and LB that more then likely wasn't going to play much next yr is a big deal. If he'd have been staying at qb and was going to push for the starting job then we have something to meltdown over. As it sits we'll have 4 qbs for next yr with a possible 5th with an offer out there. We are pretty young at LB with some more coming in. I'm not too worried about losing him other then playing against him if he gets good ha.

Where are you getting all this insider information? close friends of the family or something

We do need good special teams guys to be strong in all areas. it's not all about skill positions. if all AJ did was play special teams he could have made a positive impact. He may now need to be replaced by a less experienced player, which could hurt throughout the year.

I'm out of the loop: what is the issue that you are referring?
