Aaron White 1st Hand Observation

Yes

Were either of them major impact players? No

Cartwright had a nice year, but lets not forget he's a junior, not a freshman.

Melsahn had his moments, but he also had moments where he disappeared and was a non factor.

SO Cartwright leads the conference in assists during league play and Basabe, a true freshman (mid-major talent in your eyes) averages 11pts, 7rebs and 1 block and they're not "major impact players"?

Within a few months, Fran turned Brommer and Archie into players that had a major impact in the victory over Purdue to end the season. That still blows my mind.

I very much doubt that a kid Fran handpicks to play forward in his system won't have a significant impact in the first year on a team with little front court depth.

Major impact? Brommer played 5 minutes and scored 2 points. He was in there collecting fouls.

I did like what Archie did at times. Minus the free throws! :D

Brommer wasn't a major contributor in the Purdue game, but there were other games where he played a very important role in the team's performance. Archie was mostly the other way around. He didn't contribute a ton throughout the year (though there were a few bright spots), and then was instrumental in the Purdue game (his defense against Johnson was one of the biggest keys to the victory). I'm cautiously optimistic that they'll both improve to give us consistently solid (not spectacular) minutes.

Brommer had some good games this season...you're a Cyclone fan, you saw them all...and get off of Archie! It takes some serious talent to miss the basket you're shooting at almost as badly as the basket you're NOT shooting at, with a free throw!

He definitely has room for improvement in the free throw dept.

I wasn't saying Brommer was bad or Archie was good. I was talking to the dude who mentioned the Purdue game. I like what I saw from Archie in that game while Brommer was just in there for fouls.

I think you read me wrong, 17...I was just taking the opportunity to try out a new Archie FT joke!:D

Temple, Boston College, Northwestern, Iowa.

If you are going to quote his lists, do it in full. Just because he has mid-major offers, doesn't make him a mid-major player.

Look, I am not against White at all and his tapes have looked pretty good. But I have to be real, if Fran keeps winning recruiting wars with Temple, BC, and NW this Iowa program will not be attending the NCAA tournament very soon.

You have to start somewhere. When you haven't won an NCAA game for a decade you aren't going to be beating Michigan St or Kansas for recruits. Gotta start by winning the recruiting battles against the Temples and BCs of the world, and just keep raising the talent level each year.

You make a very good point, but in this day and age you only get a year or two to assemble the building blocks before the world comes crashing down around the program. I do not agree with this at all but it is the beast that is college basketball right now.

This is absolutely accurate. And it is why it is so hard to turn around a program these days. A coach basically has to start hitting home runs right out of the gate. Otherwise, you are playing catch-up too long.

Case in point Fran and company are scrambling to sign a second class in Spring, while the rest of the Big Ten is concentrating on 2012 and beyond.

This is true, but I think that we can safely say that Fran has a pretty solid learning curve. I think anymore, it's tough to turn it around quickly (meaning already having a class locked up and focusing on next year at this point) without cheating. If you're trying to turn it around and do it in an even remotely clean fashion, it's going to be tough. But, I want to see how this class turns out and how it looks next year. Fran's got that eye for talent, so we'll see if he can get us high enough to get us in with players like Woodbury and Jok, and hell, maybe even Paige (tremendous long shot, but the door isn't closed until he signs the dotted line).

In a position like what we're in in this day and age, you've got three choices, IMO: 1. cheat 2. do things cleanly but with a coach that has no eye for hidden talent and can't develop the talent he has (Lickliter), or 3. develop what you have, then find those hidden gems and develop them until you can get that "gateway recruit".

We're pretty plainly at option #3, which is just about all we could hope for.

How about option 4, hire an assistant who has a true track record of recruiting in the nearest hotbed of talent - Chicago? That is what the Dillard hire should have been. Just don't see what Sherm is really bringing to the table at this point. If you look at the Iowa vs. Illinois thread, you will see talk about how Webber turned it around in recruiting. If Fran can't find a way to make a big recruiting leap between now and November, he needs to start thinking about a similar move with his staff.

Love to hear these things. I hope these are true. However, I am taking these with a bit of skeptism. Seems like we heard the same thing about Anthony Tucker a few short years ago.
Tucker would have been a good player had he not been more interested in drinking than actually being a student-athlete. He fit the mold of many Iowa recruits in the past few years, don't see White having character issues.

Winning recruiting wars against the good A-10 teams is a good thing, that league is pretty good, every year. Surprised to see them knocked out as early as they were in the tournament. Boston College has been a tournament team of late and with the new coach they have, it is good to get White away from them.

Didn't Kyle Meyer in the 2012 class commit to Iowa? As I have posted before, if you haven't noticed, Iowa isn't a good program today, but has some returning talent. When a program is in the state the Iowa program in, new coach, it is impossible to play catch up in one offseason. Fran has actually done that, to me. It is obvious that two guys will sign, when, don't care, but it will happen. For getting a late start to recruiting last season, he did very well. Look for Iowa to get more 2012 commits after or during the AAU season this Summer. If Iowa has a class in place other than Meyer before these kids start playing their Senior seasons, then there is no harm. Also, you better believe that Fran and company will be all over the 2013 class this Summer as well, as there are already quite a few offers out there. Remember, Iowa has offered a 2014 kid as well, if you think this Staff isn't on kids now for two or three years down the road then there is a bigger problem. Also, if Fran fails, so does Barta, so I think Fran will get plenty of opportunity to succeed and given more time with the facility upgrades that are going on now.
