A few thoughts on IOWA Basketball for 2017-18

Just a few random thoughts and things I have been hearing which may be interesting developments for next year (which already has me very excited)

1. Chad Leistkow mentioned in a podcast the thought of potentially redshirting Dailey or Pemsl or even Kriener (if something happens) along with Connor McCaffery this year. Would red shirt Pemsl to let him fully fully recover from his Sports Hernia Injury. Also Dailey didn't play any in Europe and is a bit banged up as well. These two could develop throughout the season where they may not receive as many minutes and then come into the 2018-19 fully healthy with another year of growth under their belts. Also would improve our future depth once Uhl, Ellingson, Moss, Baer and Wagner graduate.


2. Went back and watched the Iowa vs Ohio State game from last year (1/28/17) in Carver and saw that 1. Kriener shot 6-7 with 14 points off the bench and looked phenomenal. Kriener if he stays healthy, I see contributing a TON next year and helping us out greatly and could limit Pemsl's role to some extent. Hence maybe redshirt Pemsl.

3. As well as I got a chance to remember how elite of a shooter Brady Ellingson is when he gets hot and his ability to stretch the floor in transition and in the half court offense. Ellingson I see being a major player next year in his respective role quality. Also this made me understand and realize how Fran likes having a guy like this to strtech the floor and truly justifies the C.J. Fredrick signing for the 2018 class along with Wieskamp. Especially with Ellingson's potential grad transfer move (which if he has a strong year could be to a top tier school), having one of the "best shooters in the Midwest" in Fredrick could be a great addition.

4. Not to overreact to the Italy trip or PTL because they are both small sample sizes against weaker competition but seems like Moss has really worked on his 3 in the half court offense to now pair with his slashing ability in transition could be very lethal for our team at a position where we could use a go-to iso scorer out beyond the arc. Also, I believe Garza will start but have a year similar to Pemsl's from last year where he shoots a high field goal percentage but due to lack of minutes and just overall fatigue from being a True Freshman power forward/center in the Big Ten and banging inside against guys like Ethan Happ and Isaac Hass on both the offensive side and defensive side possession after possession. I also think Fran is thinking about the future of Iowa Basketball and will naturally be cautious with Garza and Nunge to not have them burn out and then decline their Sophomore Season when now a Big Ten Championship and Sweet 16 birth could be very realistic possibilities for us.
 
I don't expect any red shirts. We still have a couple months so hopefully Pemsl will be healthy and ready in time.

Dailey... he either can contribute or not. If not just recruit over him.

I think Daily could develop into a starter at the SF. I wouldn't mind seeing him RS. I would not be in favor of either Pemsl or Kriener redshirting. They will both be key contributors this season.
 
I do think pemsl's absence combined with garzas outbreak might push pemsl into a bench role. However if he's healthy he will play. He can absolutely sub in for both cook and Garza and give solid backup minutes
 
All I'm hearing is Pemsl is pretty much good to go already and there's still more than two months until the season starts.

Weiskamp will play ahead of Dailey as soon as he's on campus at the 3.

1 - I've said it before, I'll say it again - Doc NEEDS to red-shirt. His playing time this year is going to be similar to last year: Virtually non-existent. He would benefit from a red-shirt year.

2 - I've also said this before: If Pemsl is not 100%, he's going to lose playing time early. He needs to sit if he's not healthy.

3 - Agreed. We have some pretty good shooters coming in. I hope Brady has a hot year so he can GradTran out and make room for others. I'm not saying anything bad about Brady, just that Iowa has some pretty good shooters waiting in the wings.

4 - If Garza has a year similar to Pemsl last year, this is gonna be a fun year.

2. I completely agree with you. Last year Kriener essentially missed all of summer and the beginning of the year and struggled to carve out a role until late in the year and if Pemsl isn't 100 percent the same thing could happen.

Also while I do agree Wieskamp will be our 3 ahead of Dailey in the rotation, if we don't used Dailey very much this year (which it looks like that will most likely happen), we could save a year of eligibility and use him in the future when we lose Uhl, Baer, and Moss.
 
Pemsl and Kriener are both "sneaky good" around the basket...it is tough to coach that and it is an attribute we have been lacking recently.

If they don't play as much I will be surprised...and perhaps pleasantly...

Cordell. Plays! Minutes tight for all.He is real good.Sweet 16 or bust.
 
The only one I could see redshirting is Dailey if he is indeed hurt. Pemsl was practicing, and apparently playing well, prior to the trip but was held out just as a precaution. After seeing the competition we played I'm glad they held him out. I don't see any reason Kriener would accept a redshirt being that Cook, Pemsl, Garza, and Nunge are all his age or younger.

That OSU game while fun to watch as an Iowa fan should be taken with a serious grain of salt. That OSU team had serious issues and was about as hapless a B1G team as you will ever see roll into CHA.

I'm not sure why some others are hoping to see Ellingson move on after this year. Having a 5th year senior who's a lights out shooter off the bench would be a luxury, for what appears to be a very strong team we will have in 2018-2019. The Frederick situation will work itself out one way or another.

I've said since the end of last season that Moss is the real X-factor for this team. Imo Cook is the clear star but Moss needs to be the second option. JBo I think is best suited as a distributor and 3rd scoring option. If Moss can play consistent and give us 10-12ppg I think we will have a nice season. I'm starting to wonder if he has the potential to be closer to 14-15ppg, which could elevate this team even higher.

I don't hope to see Ellingson transfer, but he will have graduated so will have that option and I think he will look hard at it. It doesn't have as much to do with CJ Fredrick as it does Joe Wieskamp. He's going to be a top 50 player coming into Iowa and impossible to keep off the court. So if Ellingson gets limited minutes this year its only getting worse next year.

4. Agreed completely. Moss needs to develop into a go to scorer for us when the shot clock is running down or if we need a clutch basket and can't post up Cook. Too many times last year it was Bohannon just shooting a three late in the shot clock when the offense wouldn't produce a good look. Love Moss' ability in transition to begin with.

Also with our depth and our style of play I think it blends very well because we can get out and run not have to worry about fatigue.

Overall I am excited for this team and the possibilities to truly compete in the upper third of the deep and (other than Michigan State and maybe Minnesota) wide open Big Ten. The relatively easy Big ten schedule combined with very easy non conference definitely means we can't drop any stupid games in the non conference.

I still think there will be minutes for BE next year. I think JW or Moss will spend time at the 3. I actually could see JW and Moss both starting.

Anyways I understand what you are saying. As an Iowa fan I hope he stays, another asset in the war chest for Fran. On a personal level Brady should do whatever he feels is in his best interest.
 
I hope Brady stays. I think he can add value as the backup 2 these next 2 years. He's much more proven than Dailey.

I said it in another thread but I could see Weiskamp start as a freshman at the 3 and Baer go back to 6th man after starting this year. Worst case, Weiskamp backs up Baer his freshman year before being a 3 year starter.
 
Kreiner coming on like he has this summer just makes things interesting.... There's such a long jam at the forward spots... The mixing and matching Fran will get to do will be interesting. What if one of them just gets so darn hot you can't take them off the floor? Kreiner seems to be that type of kid where if he's on he can really be hot. But will he only get 2-4 mins at a pop regardless of that just so others are playing? Some of it will be dictated by the opponents rosters too. We can play small ball too although that might be against what our strengths may be. But I can see them playing a lineup at times with JBo, Moss, Ellingson Baer, and pick your big guy for stretches. It'll be a fun year to see how it goes...

That's what I wondered. I've seen JW listed anywhere from 6'4-6'6. He might be slightly undersized for the 3 in today's day and age.

At least initially with the roster we have. I think JW and Moss will be our best 2 options at the wing and they'll play together. If not day 1, definetly after Baer graduates.
