A few thoughts on IOWA Basketball for 2017-18

At least initially with the roster we have. I think JW and Moss will be our best 2 options at the wing and they'll play together. If not day 1, definetly after Baer graduates.

you could be right. but 6'5" is a bit short for sf, these days. but hey, get the best guys on the floor. It might be a disadvantage on defense unless we're in a zone.

Do we have anyone that can bring what Zach McCabe brought?

Remember when James Winters at 6'5 was playing center for us and we had a guy that was like 6'2 that played forward around that time or so that could jump out of the gym. I'm struggling to remember his name darn it.. Totally different time now but if Iowa were to play small ball for stretches of time it wouldn't be a bad thing. To me it's just a matchup thing with who the opponent is.

I envision Moss at the point and Bo at the off guard position. Moss has that quickness and explosiveness you want in a point guard. Bo in my opinion is taylor made to be an off guard with his deep shooting ability and passing ability. The point guard passes it off the off guard. If the off guard is a great shooter like Bo then the defense will collapse on Bo which will open up passing lanes to the three, four, and five positions. Altimately your post positions offer you highest percentages of shots so the ultimate goal is to get the ball down low to get the higher percentage shot PLUS it leads to significant foul trouble for the opponent.

Just thinking ahead to next year from an offensive point of view, Moss, Bo, Wiesskamp, Garza, and Cook (if Cook comes back) could be one of the most offensively potent set of players I have seen in the forty years I have followed Iowa basketball. The bench is also going to be damn good too. Mouth is watering just thinking about.

Val Barnes??

Nope Daryl Moore is who I was thinking of. I had to look him up cause it was bugging me.

Wow...that's digging deep. But yeah, I remember him. But I think Val Barnes was a similar guy: 6'3" ish and playing a fwd position? But yeah, our "undersized" players now are not really undersized. They're guys that can play multiple positions, so undersized is relative and works both ways for us.

Yeah I was straining to remember his name that's for sure but I remember how he played. He used his hops to go at it down low. Wasn't a star by any means but had some moments. He was a stud during summer at North Liberty I remember that too. Barnes yeah was like 6'2 or 6'3. He was more of a legit 2 it seemed like. But I could be wrong and he may have had to bang with forwards some too they were right around the same time frame

I don't think Bohannon is a better shooter than Moss or Ellingson, but he is a good shooter. Bohannon has that ability to hit the shot under pressure which Ellingson or Moss haven't proven yet. Bohannon doesn't have the size of either Moss or Ellingson. Ellingson is bigger and probably just as athletic as Bohannon.

What!? 80% from 3 at Maryland last year. Can't tell if you're trolling or just blind. Highlight is below since you must have missed this one.

It's definitely going to give Fran some great choices.

Moss has shot it well in both the PTL and overseas. I'm thinking it's a very good sign to come because we know he's an elite slasher on the break and he's good defensively. If he can add being a shooter and get better/more aggressive driving in the half court, he'd be a complete player.

But I can't agree he's a better shooter than JBo who did it against B1G competition and in big time moments. Moss is and will be a better overall player than Jordan, but in my opinion I don't think he'll ever be a better shooter.

I don't understand all the negative comments on JBo. It's baffling to me really. Does anyone recall last season?? It wasn't that long ago. He had a fantastic year!
Good Lord, go back and look at the video (At Madison...at Maryland and any other B1G game )
If somebody has a hot PTL, that's fine and it makes for good conversation during the summer...but until somebody consistently outplays JB WHEN IT COUNTS consider me on Team-Bohannon!

JBo is a cold-blooded sniper and I feel he'll have many shots like at WUs. That was the highest high for me, last season. JBo is an elite shooter and a really good player. Regardless of whether I feel he's a better sg than pg, he's a good basketball player. But, that doesn't stop critiquing.
