A Complete Embarrassment

How good of a coach are you???? Tell us more......
Obviously not as good as you self proclaim you are. Using your own measurement style, I've been praised by 1 Big Ten Head coach and 1 Big Ten Asst coach who was a former Big Ten starter and one of my assistants so in your eyes I must be pretty good.

Where did your dad park his Porsche? Next to the presidential limo? Lol I didn't say I was the greatest coach on the planet but I am a student of the game and understand what good coaching is..what it looks like. I've been on a football staff and we won an Iowa high school football state championship. I was mentored by a hall of fame coach. That doesn't make me a super coach, it just means that I have seen what good coaching looks like, contributed to that coaching philosophy and can recognize the work and efforts of our current Hawkeye staff. Proud to have them. Ask Hawkeye fans who lived through 1960-1979 what it's like to be thankful for a good coach. If someone wants to break down a game or game film and point to a mistake here and there as bad coaching, I'd question whether you do understand the game. Mistakes are a part of the game. Pros make 5 mistakes or more a game. I guess arguing that KF and his staff are poor coaches takes more than you've presented when you consider top 10 finishes, bowl victories, 9 win seasons, big ten championships, Jan 1 bowl games including Orange bowl victories...whew pretty lucky we have all of these super athletes that bail him out. No wait, that can't be true because none amount to much at the next level. Stop. Youve been Rick-rolled.

I'm not after what happened last week.. Typical Ferentz football, he has one really good year and then Iowa has very high pre-season expectations the following year only to underperform.

One good season then followed by 3-4 mediocre/below average seasons, but Kirk always gets a raise and contract extension every time. It's so frustrating, and we're going through it again. The way we look right now, we'll be lucky to win 6-7 games.
But this season isn't typical Iowa football, so far. The O and D lines are sub par compared to typical Iowa expectations (now, if one were to gripe about Iowa's pass rush ability, that's actually been typical Iowa football for more than a decade). Typically, the Iowa defense never stops they 'push' (if one should wish for an un-Iowa tendency for success, this could be it). Iowa's QB is above par and many fans were expecting C.J. to keep Iowa's defense off the field like last season but, because of the O line's deficiencies, that also isn't happening. Iowa also has typical-quality Iowa receivers..

What's different this year to last? Iowa's offense. It's O-line and pass receivers aren't as good forcing Iowa's defense to stay more on the field. And the D line can't stop anyone, either.

Side note: Since Vandy broke his foot, is it a stretch for Mitchell to resume full-time receiver duties if he's uninjured?

Second side note: If Vandy receives another hardship year of eligibility, are we certain he won't fly to some other college (even in the B1G) as a graduate with eligibility?

I don't know what your issue is but you are ridiculous. We disagree on what makes a good coach. In short it seems being a good coach is about X's and O's and developing NFL role players. I think it's about winning (not necessarily at all costs though). You started the insults and coming after me because I think KF is a mediocre coach. Get over it and grow up.

I'm going to repost my first reply to you..you tell me where I insulted you or started this...review each post and tell me about how you said i wasn't a good coach, etc. My whole argument is that you are wrong and that your proof is non-existant. That's all. But if you want to say so..try to do better than....cuz....here is what "set you off" lol

Saying that the Hawks are poorly coached is dead wrong. I have some real concerns about play calling, game management, etc..but our kids get some of the best coaching in the nation. We do develop nfl caliber players. Before we start making statements about how our athletes are poorly coach just remember that a lot of programs higher up didn't want that kid and we are developing and competing with that same kid. I think we have good athletes all over the field but some are young (de) and only a couple are elite type players (jewell, king). The rest of our kids, everyone else has just as good of a player. I think it's player leadership at this point. There is no excitement, no enthusiasm. No swag. Its just on to the next play. I want to see some emotion. I'm not seeing any passion. I'm not sure you can blame that on a coaching staff.

I hope you are ok and have had a chance to recover from my vicious attacks. I now consider this issue closed. Hate on the staff if you will. Please don't celebrate any of the victories though if you are going to cry about all that is wrong.

I don't have time to go back and look through it all. The rhetoric ramped up on your part after that and my response. Basically we disagree and do it with more emotion than KF does in coaching.. I could care less about emotion except that something seems wrong. In Iowa's case, something is wrong in re to winning as many as they do and yet losing two years in a row to 3 wins MN teams plus ISU. It just does't make sense. To put it directly, it's often very boring football, especially when not winning or losing close games.

In a high school baseball game I was coaching once, both teams were undefeated late in the season. We were the visitor. With the score tied 1-1 I tried to score a fast kid from 3rd. I was at 3rd Base. The kid tripped over 3rd and tried to run home. I know the rules.... I reached out and grabbed him anyway and tossed him back on 3rrd. The other coach who'd been all over the umpires the whole game came charging out of the dugout. He was right behind me and saw the whole thing. The umpire came up to both of us and asked me, "did you touch him?" I turned my back and looked into left field saying nothing. Umpire responded, "PLAY BALL!". Later we loaded the basis and had a pinch hit double off the center field wall. I don't mind KF being calm in some situations, but boy I wish he'd open up some.

I'll try and recover from your attacks....o_O I still think KF is a mediocre coach who has some fantastic abilities in some aspects of coaching. He needs to either get good coordinators (or let the one's he has open up), or become an assistant. He's like a great salesman on a sales team who is named General Sales Manager. Fine as long as he has other strong performers under him and/or doesn't get in the way of achievers. One of those great producers is no longer living. You can count last year....fine 12-0 is pretty good, but that last game was a real thrashing, but hardly necessary.

See now there you are saying things that I definitely can get on board with...absolutely. I guess I separate bad coaching from....could be better coaching. Any great coach or leader on a larger scale group, company, team, nation finds people with talent, communicates the philosophy and allows the talent to flourish. I think we probably agree somewhere on this point. You may see it as the failing of KF to get the right guys...whereas I might feel that it's tough for him to get guys like we need. Cream of the crop types. I think KF's philosophy, understanding that he knows he will not have the better athletes on the field 40% of the time, is to play a style of game that almost always gives his team a chance to win. Control the ball, play bend but don't break defense, minimize turnovers, create a turnover from an opponent's mistake and he will win say 60% on being disciplined to that philosophy alone. If luck, fortune also shine, maybe another 10%. The remaining 30%, granted there is no mathematical proof to what I'm saying, just opinion, we have a chance to be within striking distance or have limited teams with superior talent to the point that we can pull some out. I think last year is pretty representative of this theory. A lot of close games. Don't lose from shooting yourself in the foot. Keep better teams close. Make a few plays, have some luck, wear them down enough to win those games where on paper you might be considered over matched.

I don't mind this philosophy. Its painful at times. You wish you could be a sports car against the bad teams and only implement operation "keep it close" vs superior teams, but people are creatures of habit and can't turn it off and on game to game.

Yes, great points on having good assistants do their thing. Id love to see that. I think, in the end anyone can go to Notre dame or usc, Michigan, Ohio state, florida, etc and roll out of bed with 8-9 wins each year. Its a lot more difficult here so I cut the man some slack because I like winning 8-10 games..I'll put up with 7..maybe a 5 or 6 if need be every few years..but I can still see 11 or 12 on occasion. I love being an Iowa Hawkeye and I love the KF gives me more smiles (W's) than frowns. We could all live a couple hours West and have what those folks have..and they breathe the same air..drink the same water..and have the same Recruiting base to pull from. The glass is half full in my neighborhood. Half full or half empty. GO HAWKS!!!
