64+8 doesn't equal 68

I hope we are not turning what was a humorous thread into a teacher bashing thread...

I know many teachers who had opportunities to work in labs/companies etc...but found that helping kids discover the wonders of science and math was much more rewarding...

i am am one...turned down an engineering job to be a teacher...also tried to follow my dream of playing pro baseball but got cut. I can't stand when people rip on teachers because it is a thankless job anyway. I don't need the thanks but I can't stand those that can't understand the difficulties of the job.

Back to math, 64+4 still equals 68 right? We are in the First Four, I just ran it on the calculator so the numbers add up.

Whoa, what the hell is this? I am not bashing teachers, but instead of just a bunch of life histories and stuff, I would hope someone would just tell me where I messed up my analysis.

As to your second point, given Karen Lewis's proclivities for siphoning money away from people, I have no doubt she would be the head of a large multinational corporation making millions, if not billions, of dollars if she were not a selfless individual interested only in protecting the children.

I am a high school math teacher...kids will be introduced to the Pythagorean theorem in algebra...it is explained in depth in geometry....it is used some in algebra 2....and is gone into more depth in trig when looking at triangles more.

but what would I know I only teach it in both algebra and geometry.

For the win! Love it.

I know you are just trying to make it as simple as possible but the Hawks problems go way past that.

The problem is you can only fly off the handle without resorting physical violence so many times before the players realize they aren't really going to get punched. Eventually, they will no longer cower in fear every time you fly off the handle. You resolve that problem by finally punching someone. It worked for Bob Knight.

I have nothing but respect for the good teachers out there. Absolutely thankless job (for the most part) that pays much less than it should.

There is nothing more important than a good math instructor. I had some great ones.

The 4 "play in" games are a little confusing, particularly when they call it the first round.

I think the NCAA is setting us up for a 96 team field, which I favor anyway

OMG, 32 play in games!!!!!!

Why don't they just make it a 128 team field? Even with the NIT wouldn't it still be about the same percentage of teams making the post season as there is in football?

The 1 seed playing the 32 seed, I am trying to imagine how bad the 32 seed would be.

With the current scholarship rules a 32nd seed could easily be as competitive as a 16th seed from about 25 years ago.

That would be too many teams. I don't really even like the +4, even if we may have benefitted from it this year.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. You have to times the 5 by something and you're just being coy now.

Many who are lawyers defend guilty people. haha OK4P, i assume you had a few good teachers along the way, maybe in law school who were or could have been good lawyers.

Teaching and passing on information is a gift for those who do it well and a calling.

Law professors as good lawyers? Oh man, you guys have completely turned this into a troll fest.

I agree with you that the indiscriminant assessment of teachers as "failing" or "incompetent for the private sector" is silly. It reflects more on the person speaking such silliness than the teaching profession.

However, to say that teaching is a "thankless job" overstates the situation a bit, in my opinion.

Other than non-specific references to "the troops", who is the recipient of more public expression of gratitude than teachers? Maybe the police or firefighters, but I cannot think of anyone else.
