64+8 doesn't equal 68

Maybe I misremembered and you need to type in 5 and then press the sine button on your calculator. I missed that day of trig and when we are dealing with triangles, I gotta dig deep into the trig trick book.

It's a 3-4-5 right triangle.

lulz, some people don't get it

Congrats hoffa, you got me to log in over there to see what the heck this was all about.

I guess I should have been doing something different in math class all those years-

You learn that in geometry and some start it in algebra.

I'd be impressed if you didn't use a calculator.

I'm pretty sure that was a trig problem and not a geometry or algebra problem, dude.

I am a high school math teacher...kids will be introduced to the Pythagorean theorem in algebra...it is explained in depth in geometry....it is used some in algebra 2....and is gone into more depth in trig when looking at triangles more.

but what would I know I only teach it in both algebra and geometry.

How are the kids doing these days in terms of math competency?

Considering a lot of them want to blame the calculator when they get a wrong answer I would say it could be better...but I love working with kids on something so many are scared of. It is a challenge and I love that.

Ehhh... Who needs math or science in the digital age? Just funnel them towards some sort of humanities.

Iowa is like Liam Neeson in Batman Begins. Our house has blown up and we're sliding unconsciously down an icy hill almost to our death (out of the NCAA tournament) when Christian Bale (selection committee) shows up and saves us right before we die. Now, do we wake up, and continue on our mission of destruction and go destroy Batman's house, or do we just give up and die on the way down the mountain??

I hope we are not turning what was a humorous thread into a teacher bashing thread...

I know many teachers who had opportunities to work in labs/companies etc...but found that helping kids discover the wonders of science and math was much more rewarding...

No kidding, I know a ton of teachers that could be making high six figures in their specific field that instead decided to teach the future of this country for pennies. Respect.

A coach who attempts to solve problems with uncontrolled rage + A team that no longer responds to those antics = Disaster
