5 First Team All-Big 10 and We Finish 5-4 in Conference??

I feel like there are a lot of cliche superlatives that could go here..."you're only as strong as your weakest link"...."the whole is greater than the sum of its parts"...etc.

Mike Trout is a 2 time MVP and 7 time All Star and has never won a single playoff game in his career.

This is pretty unprecedented and the coaching staff needs to hold themselves accountable.

On paper, Iowa was talented enough to win the entire Big 10, let alone the lowly Big 10 West, which was regarded as one of the worst Power 5 divisions.

To lose 4 conference games and come up that far short despite having 5 super stars on the roster, with ZERO major injuries this year, can only be blamed on coaching! Whether it's scheme, clock management, predictable play calling, or poor personnel decisions (like refusing to sit your QB in the Penn State game no matter how poorly he's playing, or losing track of Fant on your roster), the coaching staff must be accountable for letting this team and the fans down this year.

Will they be? Nope. Kirk just cashed in $700,000 in bonuses for his 8th win and bowl bid! If we win the bowl game and finish the season ranked, his bonus will be a cool $1,000,000 for a 4 loss season where we beat zero ranked opponents. Son Brian is already scheduled for a $100,000 raise next year for leading the "dynamic" offense that will finish in the middle of the pack nationally.

By comparison, let's look at Northwestern. They won the Big 10 West (and beat Iowa) with a grand total of 1 player on either the First or Second team all Big 10! Northwestern coaches get the best out of their players and win the close games.

The lesson is that shit happens. Turnovers and turnovers at wrong time will kill you. running game was average at best. we played everybody and then some at linebacker this year. That caught up to us later in the year.

Just slow down on your b10 west is the weakest division.
Let's see which side of the conference wins more bowl games. I don't know who they play yet, but betting against Iowa, Purdue, Northwestern and Wisconsin might not be advisable.
All have shown when they play well they are to be reckoned with.
Lol. We beat one team with a winning record

Purdue beat OSU this year, Iowa beat OSU last year.
Lowly Nebraska beat MSU this year. Gave OSU a game.
Northwestern beat MSU and gave Michigan a game.

In total yards the west holds 3 of the top 4 offences in the conference.
It's possible as pointed out in another thread, Iowa has the best defense in the conference.

Just saying, there is not as much difference as some would like to pretend
There is a universe of difference between iowa and the top 10.

The difference being, Mike Trout doesn't play on a roster with 5 all-stars like the Hawkeyes have. If he did, and his team didn't win a playoff game, his manager would be yanked immediately.

I don't think it has sunk in for most Hawk fans yet. Iowa's team was as talented as Michigan or Ohio State this year in terms of all-Big 10 talent. Yet we went 5-4...without playing either one of the top 2 teams in our conference.

Iowa under-performed for sure. No arguing that. A lot of close losses where bad turnovers completely changed the games. 3 turnovers vs Wisconsin including the ridiculous punt return nonsense, the INT at the end zone vs Penn State, the 2 RB fumbles late vs NW.

No amount of stud recruits are going to save Iowa football from terrible turnovers

I'm repeating myself here but Iowa should have won the West, easily. They crapped this one down their leg, both coaches and players.

Worth noting - the #1 contributor to every single loss was a certain QB who couldn't even get an Honorable mention from anyone watching. (Yes, EVERY game, including Wisconsin - 6'5" and can't gain 6" on 4th; horrible 4th quarter)

You can have your handful of All-Conf players but when a below-average guy controls the ball on every snap, well ...

The B1G West isn't even CLOSE to the worst division in the P5 this season - so I've never really understood that narrative. Ya know that division strengths change yearly right? The B1G 12, if it had divisions would be a holy shit show, what would have won it, 3-6? The ACC Coastal? How bout either side of the PAC 12? How bout the SEC East? The B1G West is NOT the worst division in the P5, I wouldn't even say it's the 2nd or 3rd worse.

You think the Big Ten West is better than the SEC East? Are you nuts? Purdue, tied for second, lost to Mizzou. Georgia would murder anyone in the Big Ten West and would probably beat an all-star team from the division by at least 17. Florida would shit truck anyone in the division as well. Kentucky would probably drop a game.

And yeah, the ACC Coastal sucks, but 3-5 Duke beat the ever living shit out of Big Ten West Champion Northwestern. And it ain't like Northwestern backslid into the title, either. They went 6-0 in the division.

I don't know about the PAC 12. Maybe the West is better than those teams. Their games are on too damned late for me to watch.

Besides GA tho, there’s nothing. I’m just saying it’s close and the B1G west is now where near the worst division in the p5 this year

It isn't like other conference are all that hard. The Pac 12 was garbage, so was the ACC. The Big12 was weak as well, heck both ISU and Iowa got to play 6 conference opponents that didn't have a winning record.

I think we’re all arguing about what collectively should be considered a very mediocre year for all but 8-10 college football teams nationally. However, with the amount of stupid money that just about every major school is investing in today’s game, the parody will only get worse. Iowa will be thrilled with 6-6 next year, easy money.

This. Outside of a brief stretch of brilliance for Clemson and Georgia for about 3 quarters, there's been zero doubt this year about who the top dog is.

Hell, 4 of the 5 P5 championship games feature teams with at least 3 losses (both teams for the Pac 12). Just a down year for CFB as a whole.

Regression toward the mean everywhere. Or is it median? @tksirius we’re gonna need a statistics lesson before things get out of hand again.
